As a former Police Officer, we carried the Beneli semi-auto in our squads. For home defense, I think nothing beats a pump action. There is something about that sound of racking a round into it that puts the fear of God in people. We had pump action as our less lethal bean bag guns and just racking a round in them would gain compliance sometimes.

@@JNygaard So... just to make sure I wasn't remembering incorrectly, I stepped away to test it with an M4 and a couple dummy rounds, aggressively pulling the charging handle back and letting it slam home. You're right that it doesn't sound exactly like an 870, but it's easily just as loud, and pretty hard to mistake as anything but a shotgun being charged.

@@chaz720 it is definitely a destictive sound that most people could identify as a gun being loaded I guess I was just saying the pump action seems to have that universal pucker factor, lol. I was once chasing after a guy in an open field after a car chase. I grabbed the less lethal and loaded the rounds as I gave chase. I waited until I got about 20 yards from him and I racked a round in it and as soon as he heard it he dropped. Same thing with a car chase up from Milwaukee. Guy crashed and decided it was a good idea to wade out in the middle of a pond to avoid capture. Cops all surrounded him but no one could convince him to come to shore, can't taze him and no one wants to get wet. Then I came up with the less lethal and racked a round and leveled it at him. He said he would come to shore as long as I didn't shoot him with a "beenie bag" lol.

I say shotgun for home defense for 2 reasons 3 really. 1 hard to miss your target 2 they are crazy loud it will get your neighbors attention and 3 there is nothing more intimidating than a damn pump action shotgun. I think the best solution is a short shotgun for better handling and minishells for recoil management the lack of collateral damage and more hits always if you don't live in a house of 3000y2 then you use an ar5.56 16inc barrel with leupold optics
