A few corrections from a Volvo guy. - They weigh under 1.5 tonnes. (not 2 tonnes) - They have 4 pot calipers on front (not 2 pot) - 2 pot calipers on the rear

By modern terms they're quite light for their size. Over 2 tonnes was the gross rating filled with passengers and luggage (dead bodies).

EveryDayCar Hi I’ve found one in Costa Rica with only 115,000 Km. It might or might not have an issue with the fuel. Pump relay or the fuel pump. One owner, I think it makes for a formidable first car for a lad. I’ve been doing some research locally for parts availability and problems, but haven’t found much yet!

@@mikaelwojciechowski7281 mine has been. Previous owner ran it through a tree, I got it and fixed it 3 years ago. It's been a daily driver since. I had a roofing shingle fly into my left headlight bezel and tear the turn signal, it's wiring, and fender trim off. Fixed that and then a boat (no joke, it was on a trailer) and a truck backed the boat into the back of my 240. Took out my taillights and made a slice in the bumper skin, no dent to the bumper itself. But the boat got a bent outdrive and a broken ladder. The "brick" nickname 240s received is accurate.

love the 240 so much :') My grandma drove a 244 when I was a kid, and now I drive a 245, '88 as well, but no turbo (unfortunately). My very first car, learned to drive in it. The odometer broke years ago (common issue after age 15-20yrs) but we estimate she's pushing 350k+ and still going strong, even after being totaled once before. Dad couldn't see wasting her, so he fixed her out of pocket. She's my trusty steed and I'm keeping her for the long haul!

I’m 56, i learnt to drive in my Mums ‘73 Volvo 142 DL, I bought my first car in 1981’ it was an American (I live in Canada) spec Volvo 164E, I drove it for two years, then bought a Honda CRX, had that 4 years and then bought a 1989 Volvo 144DL Estate, then a ‘98 V70, then a ‘99 V70’ then an ‘01 V70T5 (my absolute favourite), then I got a 2014 XC60 T6, needless to say I love Volvo’s and really enjoyed your review of this classic that I agree is overlooked! I also just inherited after my Mum passed away, her ‘02 XC70 which I will keep until it dies, thanks for reviewing one of my favourite cars around!

I have a 91 240 wagon, it's got 270k on it and I've been daily driving it since August. I've put 5000 miles on it since I purchased it and the old b230f never misses a beat. Even in -8 degree weather it starts up with the first turn of the key and I love it. It's been in NH for the past 25 years of its life *deep in the rust belt of the usa* and it's barely got any rust. a few electrical issues here and there but it seems down to just old switches. I adore the car in my opinion it's one of the best classic cars you can daily because you can still buy parts about them and you don't really have to drive it like a classic car because they're so reliable.

Your exactly right about the Volvo 240 series. I am 71 years old and bought my first Volvo when I was 19. It was a 1961 122 S, then I had a 145 wagon, a 1979 242 DL, a 1989 745 Turbo Wagon, a 1983 244 Turbo, a 1985 245 Turbo ( I still have it) a 1994 850 Turbo, a 1989 760 Turbo that I just restored and sold it. I now have a 1997 850 R Turbo, and a 1998 V 70 Cross Country Turbo. The 1985 Turbo 245 Turbo Wagon I was the second owner (as I was on almost all of them, but my sister owned it for 10 years, my brother for 1 year and back to me. I did a complete overhaul on all of the running parts as well as updating the AC System to a rotary compressor) and a tuned exhaust in the final stages of doing some minor repair to the right rear taillight area and repainting the body. It has 225,000 miles on it and it’s ready for another quarter million miles. All in all, I have around 1.35 million miles collectively On them. And yes, my 1983 Turbo saved my life before airbags. Great body works and durable motors and drive train are very durable. The old professor

I've had an '89 for about 5 years now here in Vermont. Daily driver. Most reliable car we own. Surprisingly, it has almost no rust, even after spending it's entire life in New England. Paint is pretty tired though. Not the greatest in snow, I find, although good snow tires help immensely. Mileage is unknown, odometer hasn't worked in years. I have grown surprisingly attached to it. Nice to see the favorable review.

We've been racing a Volvo 240 for about 10 years in the 24 Hours of LeMons series in the US. Everything he says about this car as a daily driver is also true about it as a race car. Great brakes, incredibly rugged, unbelievably reliable. And we've verified all the crash test data, several times over. Not the fastest, but it's a great endurance racer. Great car you bought there! As youve mentioned, what the old volvos lack in speed they make up in comfort and reliability! I own a 740 myslef and i would not trade it for anything. Its just that perfect. Its easy to fix and maintain, Works on road, off road, and turns into a heap of fun when there is snow! Perfect power and weight for snow drifting even with the basic Gl engine. Not to mention the grade A comfy seats! I have yet to come across a car that beats the Volvo seats. Take good care of it and it will last you a lifetime if not even more! The 240, 740 and 940 are some of the best cars humanity has ever produced imo.

Nice review! I drive a 1990 model of these. Has been dead nuts reliable. Decent economy (8-9L/100km). Lots of space. Upgraded the suspension a bit, it's a very nimble car around town. It was a big car for its time but now it's hardly wider or longer than a many new cars. And with the rear wheel drive a lot of fun. Also did a turbo swap on the original unopened engine and it holds together perfectly. Easy to work on, never had any rusted bolts or ripped studs. Parts are quite cheap. Anyway. Thanks for the nice review and I hope more people get interesting in these cars!

Turns on a dime and the wagons can lay a 4x8 sheet of plywood on the floor. Great visibility. They were 10 years ahead of all the other cars - my 10 year old volvo had 3 point seat belts for all three rear seat passengers when new cars didn't. I gave it to my sister when it was 12 years old and she and her teenagers drove it for 13 more years.

1:15 4 at the front, 2 at the back. To stop this brick and still be able to fit 14 inch rims. :) Mine has the 150hp 2.5l b230 based boat engine, locked diff, sway bar at front, no p/s, no a/c and only 2 resonators for the exhaust, I always beat the hell out of it, I rarely drive cars that are this fun to drive, I just love it, especially in the snow. It has a very predictable handling, they (volvo) called it dynamic safety. I love that term, imagine a smirking swede telling you this.

Volvos are freakin’ awesome. I own two 850 wagons and an S70 T5. Just got in a wreck at 40mph in my 94 850, didn’t even get a bruise, and the damage was so minimal that I was able to get it driving again for under $500. My 96 850 has over 300k miles and still pulls like a beast and looks great. My 98 S70 T5 is freakin’ insane. They claim it makes 240 hp, but it makes closer to 300. I’m doing a manual swap and a bunch of performance upgrades to it soon. I absolutely love Volvos. Best cars ever made; fun, safe, practical, durable, and cheap.

I daily drive the 1990 240DL Estate my mom bought new. In 25½ years she put almost 190,000 miles on the clock. In the 8 years since Ma had to stop driving, i have brought the mileage up to approaching 395,000 miles. They lean like crazy but if you are brave, the cornering limits are insanely high. What must be remembered is that every last calibration was to ensure trouble free driving in the most adverse of weather conditions. Beautiful car indeed. One error, though. Thr front brake calipers are not floating and work on both brake circuits. They are 4 piston, most usually supplied by Girling. Rear brake calipers are 2 piston, and again are not floating and made by Girling.. Volvo did not skimp on quality. Seats are Recaro, back ring and pinion are Dana 30. These cars are just under 3,500 pounds. Horsepower is 114. Interesting tidbit: In cars without ABS there is a pressure relief valve on the rear brakes. Volvo went to Saab Aerospace to find it. 0-60 is a touch under 13 seconds with the 4 speed auto box. Keep your foot down the car will top out at 118 or so mph.

The 244 turbo was quite a sleeper - spooled up from rest it would crack 60 in 8.5s with the 5 speed manual, in 1982.

great video, I live in winnipeg, manitoba Canada,I am on my 3rd Volvo 240, my current one is a 1989 240 DL automatic with 272kms 170,000 miles and runs good starts in any weather and nothing has heat like these cars, its funny i got the gangster thing going in my car to,lol, with winter tires on it it goes most places and drives very well on icy roads as well,I'd rather have another 5 speed again, they are just more enjoyable to drive plus they are about 4 to 5 mpg better on the highway and thats all i drive, keep up the good videos.
