I really appreciate how you specified which of these required creating an account and which didn't. most youtubers skip over this part, but I've found it's very important, even what stops me and others from choosing a plugin. I'm glad to know which options don't need an account. aside from that, great plugin choices listed in this video. I like how we are shown both instruments and effects
@cornbone Жыл бұрын
right? some of them even require you to download a separate program just to verify the "license", or enter all your payment and address details just to download a free product. i just ignore those. its just not worth it, even for a paid product its a huge hassle. i love analog obsession because there's none of that bs, you just download the zip files and you're done. on top of that, their products are always really high quality. kilohearts also has loads of free utility and sound design plugins but if im remembering right you do have to make an account. but it's been more than worth it for me. i use their plugins constantly. they have a frequency shifter, transient shaper, limiter, resonator, distortion plugin (with multiple different settings for distortion types), and a bunch of other great stuff that i use on every project. i highly recommend both of those companies. they're like the backbone of free plugins in my opinion.
@Platinum_XYZ Жыл бұрын
oh yea@@cornbone I've never understood the whole license validation for a "f r e e" download. not sure what they're validating. seemingly they just want you having their software manager so you're more likely to use the store within to buy stuff.

I wouldn't say that there's any downsides to Vital compared to Surge. They are different beasts with different strengths. Surge is not a wavetable specific synth so it can't do a lot of the more advanced stuff that Vital can, for example creating and editing wavetables. There's ofc a lot of things that Surge can do that Vital can't, but both are great!

Three free VSTs I can highly recommend: 1. TDR Molotok (Analogue Style Compressor) 2. Cherry Audio Surrealistic MG-1 (Analogue Mono Synth) 3. TAL Chorus LX (Analogue Chorus based on the Roland Juno Synth) TDR Molotok I find really useful for getting a bit of extra bite when compressing, and also to make the compressed sound "poke" out in a mix. It certainly helped when I used it on a kick and snare recently. It does add a bit of character unlike Kotelnikov, so it's a good analogue style compressor for some extra colour and analogue feel. Cherry Audio's Surrealistic MG-1 is an emulation of the vintage Realistic (MOOG) MG-1 mono synth. It emulates all the features of the MG-1 including the poly organ section, and quite simply sounds fantastic. Brilliant for Moog style synth basses and mono leads, plus a whole lot more. It really shouldn't be free, it's that good! And TAL Chorus LX is a chorus plugin modelled on the lush Roland Juno 6/ 60/ 106 built in chorus. It's basic and simple, but sometimes it's all that is needed and can really make a sound become rich, full and lush. Great video as always Michael, and nearly all of these I already have thanks to your previous recommendations! They're all excellent plugins, and the ones that I use the most (and highly recommend) are TDR Nova and Kotelnikov, Voxengo Span and YouLean Loudness meter. I should probably try using Valhalla more than I do as it sounds excellent in your example. Your dog is cute and stole the show BTW!

some of my favourite free instrument plugins: • Isolation Piano - Pianobook library by James Kedwards of a Model O grand, loads into Decent Sampler. best sounding free piano out there in my opinion, listen to the demos on the site and hear for yourself! roughly 16 GB. • Soniccouture Hammersmith Free - another great option if you want something a bit brighter. Model D grand piano. roughly 5 GB. • MODO BASS 2 CS - free version of IK’s physically modelled bass guitar, but surprisingly fully featured. you get a P-bass with all articulations and play styles you’d need (finger/slap/pick, mute notes, slides, hammer-on/pull-off, …) plus ability to change the tone by adjusting pickup position. the interface definitely pushes you towards upgrading to get more bass models, but i believe you can get amazing results by just sticking to the free offering.

I'd like to propose a classification system for free plugins. Class A being like you described. A degree lower would be only providing an email address, and then down to a class like G where you have to create an account, download an installer and/or provide your physical address and/or a manufacturer (like IK Multimedia, Image Line or Harrison) installs dozens of plugins of which only one works and the others are demo's with nag screens or periodic noise). One free plugin rendered me 180 spam mails last month, without an option to unsubscribe. I'm glad you are so explicit about it.

I like PG-8X, a free emulation of the Roland JX-8P synth and the PG-800 controller. It comes with no presets, which obviously sucks at first. But I've come to appreciate this "flaw", because it really makes you work on your own sounds. The built-in random patch generator can be a lot of fun, too. With a little tweaking this can give results that you wouldn't have come up with. And if everything fails, you can find a ton of JX-8P patches online and load them into PG-8X. It's definitely a different beast than Vital or SurgeXT, but I enjoy the workflow of Roland's old polysynths. I'm still easily overwhelmed by the tons of wavetables and extensive routing options in modern soft synths.

I use Nova more than any other plugin. I use it as a visual analyser, to see what's going on with a track, and after plugins to see what they are actually doing. Don't forget to put the analyser on by clicking'IN'. 🙂 Often, I'll use it for that, and take it off after having a look. I also use it for the high and low pass filters when I need one, because you can see what you're doing, and where would be a good place to cut. It also is a nice transparent compressor, great for just a little bit of taming without colouring the sound. The function I use it for least, is as an equaliser! It's a great plugin, very useful!

Nowadays I've got some paid plugins so don't use much free plugins (maybe even just for the simple reason that i paid for them, so gotta use them).. But for a long time, I had only used free ones.. My favourite free ones are Synths - Syntronik CS.. its good as the sounds are pre-made and we don't have to make the sounds from scratch and its got most of the classic prog rock sounds there.. Reverbs/Delays - I find the ones on my daw satisfying enough though i do have others which i reach out for once in a while.. special mention for Deelay EQ & Compression - Red 2 & 3 (i got them free with my Focusrite interface, and they are pretty good.. I don't really use Limiters or Saturation (even though i have a few but not really using them unless i consciously want to use them just to see what happens) Distortion - Nembrini Audio TS-808.. its got that classic tube screamer sound.. really nice if we roll down the tone knob to 0 on either neck or bridge pickups (single coils).. Drums - MT Power Drum Kit (simple classic rock kit with a very useful mixer inside the plugin itself) Amp sim - Amplitube CS, its got 2 fender emulations & 2 marshall emulations, 1 high gain & 1 bass amp.. and lots of pedals.. has most of the commonly used stuff for guitar.. Organ - CollaB3, the Hammond organ.. has the drawbars which can be mapped so we can get the full hammond experience if we have faders.. Piano - Addictive Keys Grand Piano (again free with Focusrite interface or Novation keyboard.. there's a choice of 4 different pianos where we only get to choose 1 even if we buy both Focusrite's & Novation)

Hi Michael, my favorite distortion plugin is Airwindows Mackity, it has no UI but it sounds great especially on drums, cheers.

I use the Airwindows fx module on VCVrack a lot lately. Its basically all the AW fx in a single module. I like it

some more great free plugins I've found are deelay and cramit, both of which are from the same people whose name I unfortunately can't remember right now. deelay is, as the name suggests, a delay/reverb plugin with some great features, including the ability to distort the delayed signal, playing echoes in reverse, built in ducking, and an option to diffuse the delay and turn it into a reverb with a really nice texture, similar to valhalla. cramit on the other hand is ott with a bit more options than the xfer version, as well as built in pre and post saturation.

Integraudio/SixthSample. I like Deelay a lot. It makes a nice addition to Supermassive. It has a similar user interface and another lot of usable presets to tweak. The ducking feature is a godsend. No need to bother with extra busses or sidechaining. Cramit is a nice OTT effect with extra features and can serve as a saturator/distortion plugin to add to the 38 saturators everyone already has. ;)

Late to the party but if you love building eurorack style modular synthesizers, there is a fantastic free plugin called Cardinal. I'm shocked it's free for as detailed as it is. It's a bit tough to set up but when you get it working and get good at building in a modular style, the plugin is practically infinite.
