If you had only $1000 to spend on a new camera, what are you getting?
@danieli.9252Ай бұрын
I bought one a year ago (new, but a good deal, I think) based primarily on your videos about it. I'm still learning how to get the most out of it, but it's been great so far.
@peterbernhard6087Ай бұрын
It is important to consider what you want to achieve with the camera. I mainly use it for family moments, especially with my 2 year old child. And yes i want the pictures/movies to look professional and don't miss a thing. The funny thing is.. i don't think you would need mid to highend gear like i have to shoot my child for most of the professional work out there. Fast eye-AF and such things are important deciding factors in some cases. Back to the question. I would buy a ZV-1 for around 300$ used if i would start new. This thing can do the most important things and it will keep its place even if you upgrade to something bigger.

@@yannickmondoux2435 PDAF will ALWAYS create more noise. This is why Hollywood film cameras NEVER have autofocus. This was what Panasonic was going for when they chose not to use PDAF. Funny enough, their DFD system may eventually prove ahead of it's time, as the processing speeds increases. But yes, the S5 original, 100% has better DR and IQ----even if it's only slight. The Lumix S5 is a STEAL at pretty much any price.

The S5 was a great transition from Canon to Lumix. I bought the S5 when I found out it didn't overheat like my R6 did! Video autofocus isn't the greatest, but if you're comfortable in manual, you're golden!

I bought an S5 to have a camera while Leica is holding my SL hostage for repair (going on 6 months now). It is surprisingly similar to the Leica in shape feel and functionality. The rotating screen is an added benefit. I use a Sigma 90 mm L mount sometimes, but mostly use my Leica Summarit 50 and a Voightlander 28mm M-mounts with an adapter. I have had outstanding results with all of them. Will almost be disappointed when Leica finally sends back the heavier 601 ;-)

I bought an S5 when it came out, and am very pleased with it. I did buy it for photography and not video, and it does all I want, so I've not upgraded it to what seem to be the more video-oriented later S5 marques.

The 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8 were usually inexpensively bundled with the std kit Zoom, meaning there are loads of them kicking around second hand at modest prices. Both are maybe not best in class but they are not a bus ride away either. The only caveat is nervous focus which takes some work to keep it in the optimal mode and setting, but as you say the sensor is very good, one of the best for immage quality and dynamic range.

It boggles my mind that a camera like the S5 sells for so little on the used market, only a few years after its release. The video quality is truly superb. Footage shot with the S5 easily meets streaming service quality requirements. Still image quality is top notch. The only caveats for me are the autofocus, which is important for stills in challenging lighting, and the lack of 4k 100p in 10bit 422.

Thinking about getting a full frame and have a chance getting the S5II with the 20-60 kit lens for 1200 euros (1000 pounds), new directly from Panasonic. Looks like a really good deal but still alot of money for a simple hobby photographer. Decisions decisions. 🤔
@JoshCameronАй бұрын
@@SledgemanGuitar Hi :) I’d say that if you’re purely going for the photography side of things then the S5 will be a great choice. The AF is snappy when shooting stills, and the IQ is really nice. That being said, if you feel like you may do a little bit of video too, then the S5II will give you a better “out of the box” experience with AF performance, recording times etc. The S5II also has more AF detect modes for both stills and video, so if you’re into a specific type of photography (bird, car, etc) then it may give you better results too :) hope this helps!

It's too bad that there was never a firmware update that allowed us to record 4K 10-bit for more than 30 minutes. Even if it was like US $100 to $200 I think it would have been great. (It was very nice of Panasonic to include V-LOG in the S5 for free though, instead of having to pay for it like in the S1.) It also would have been great if one could record open gate ProRes 4:2:2 (not RAW) or DNxHR to an Atomos Ninja recorder
