Pretty good timing, John. My girlfriend just handed me a pair of Seymour Smith #119 to “clean up” that belonged to her mom. A good little project I think. 10 lbs of hardware from ebay......lol. You just can’t help yourself can you! You’re a man after our own hearts my friend. I come home with things now and my better half doesn’t even say anything, she just smiles and shakes her head like; “ Lloyd, you need that like a hole in the head!” Life is good! Lots of memories of using those old by pass pruning shears, mostly of blood blisters from pinching the edge of my palm between the handle ends. My old boss Ralph used to send me to mow his father’s lawn and trim the hedges. The hedges had been planted in front of a wire fence so the hedges were now well entwined in the fence. And there were always vines and trees trying to grow in the middle of the hedge. The first time I had time to really go after the vines and saplings I borrowed his dad’s shears and quickly found they didn’t cut worth a darn. The old man, who had been a mason till he retired at 65, must have caught a piece of the heavy wire fence between the blades and tried to cut it thinking it was a branch. The blades were splayed at least 5/32” at the tip when closed.

I noticed you didn't mention the brand of the pruner you restored, so I looked it up. The "band" that you thought someone made for the pruner actually came from the factory. It's a Pexto model R-125 pruner. Believe it or not, they made a beefier one, the model R-65 that had a latch at the end. From the catalog pics, the blade end on the R-65 was noticibly bigger. I enjoyed this video very much, as usually us the case with your restorations. I hope I can find a pruner like that. Very COOL! (So, Pexto made these once, but we all know tool companies get bought out and production continues under other names.)

I like how you change up how you clean tools before the wire brush. Soap and water vs. 50/50 vs. acetone, etc.

It depends on the grease type... This was a thick grease but not too much so the 50/50 was a quick solution... If there is a lot of grease and dirt I will opt for soaking in hot soapy water...

Anvil cutter is for collecting flowers ( long stem roses) or grafting work. The old days people carry both pairs, anvil and bypass shears. But now most people just use a bypass since harden blades have improved. Most gardeners I know, just carry a bypass pruner and a folding saw now. These leaf spring pruners are nice craftsmanship. I'll have to bring my Ikebana scissors next time for you to try out.

Oregon gardeners call these crush shears and bypass shears, or lops. Great video to start the new year. I’m not going to ignore any more of the non-Chinesium examples. Very common to see these in “any of these for $1” piles of rust. Thank you.

I have a request for you, since you love to polish tools. Eating Utensils are a tool for eating. Could you polish up some stainless steel knives, forks, & spoons? Maybe, some long forgotten camping eating items. The Zombie Apocalypse is now, and using clean eating tools is a must! How do you eat with a mask on? Overlapping top & bottom?

Hopefully your Stainless utensils aren't tarnishing, if dull a little Brillo or SOS brings them right back. Silver tableware is a whole different story as it tarnishes instantly. I will be doing a Sterling silver pitcher this week! Thanks!

Great way to start the new year-- a Scoutcrafter restoration. Those beautiful bypass shears were a great way to start. Beautiful restoration. Speaking of fillister head screws, I've noticed that you're lucky if the hardware stores carry oval head screws. You have a better chance of finding them at specialty carpentry shops. Salvaging junk is also an option. Happy 2021.

Those old shears are the best. You can by what is referred to as the best garden shears of today but they will never compare to those old ones. They where definitely made to last a lifetime. I searched for one of them for a good year and finally found a pair not too long ago. I bought a bucket of old tools off a guy for ten bucks because there was an old pair of garden shears in it. I don’t think he knew what he had in my opinion. My grandmother had an old pair for ever that I remember using as a kid. I wish I had of gotten them when she passed. I’m thinking they were thrown out by someone who didn’t realize how good they were.

I found you when you did your first garden shears video (because I wanted to clean up mine, and wanted to know how to). That video is still my favorite for that reason. Now I've haven't yet done my own prunes. I wanted to build up some restoration experience first. I think it's a good resolution to do those in 2021 :)

Those are darn impressive! They were not built to last a lifetime, they were built to last a civilization! Its a shame there was no makers mark on them. The copper band seems to fit so perfectly, are you sure they were not a factory lock for safe storage and shipping?

You should rust blue those. They'd be worth the time and effort, and it would give them protection from rust. If your not familiar rust bluing is a very easy process, and I doubt you'd have any problems with it if youre skilled enough to already be restoring stuff.

i actually have a pair exactly like that that i found years ago, its missing the nut, however and i've been trying to find a replacement nut(good luck finding one). great idea with the copper keeper, i'll have to make one for mine. speaking of shears, i still daily carry my great-great-grandfathers Pexto r60 cutters around the farm. can't beat em'!

I would bet that old timer bent that copper keeper up with his hand, you know how those old timers put a wing nut on finger tight and I need a pair of pliers to get it loose. I was going to suggest you bring that to Jacktown with your samples hopefully in the spring.
