Just got Kali IN-5 and Neumann KH 80 (4 inch woofer). Tested Both with a KRK10G subwoofer set at 70hz crossover. running through RME Babyface Pro FS. I first received the Neumanns and were absolutely underwhelmed by their size and looks. They are small and not really pretty speakers looking more like bigger PC-speakers. They really can`t bass, they are small! But then i bought and connected the 10 inch KRK Sub. When the Neumanns don`t have to work in the lower bass frequencies, they can unfold their potential in the low mids, mids and highs. Then i got an opportunity to lend and test the Kali IN-5 in white (beautiful) from a local music store. I disconnected a Neumann from one channel and connected a KALI instead, and played some songs over Winamp - moving the pan-slider from 100% left to 100% right to directly test KALI vs Neumann. I really wanted to send back the Neumanns and keep the KALIs, - the white model is an eye candy compared to the small black toy-looking Neumanns. I would save lots of cash - it`s 350€/piece for Kali VS 570€/piece for the Neumanns. AAAND the Kalis are 3-way monitors instead of 2-way Neumanns. I have to note - i did not use any calibration software, nor used the Neumanns DSP, nor used any switches on the Kalis. RESULT: all praise for the Kalis is ridiculous. 3 Way your butt! Absolute mushy and muddy mids - where instruments and vocals really mask each other, really dull and truncated highs. You may think they are great, - when you hav nothing good or even mid-tier to compare. Neumanns, compared to Kalis hat much better localisation in the mids - vocals and instruments were separated from each other and you could clearly hear every single instrument/vocal. Aswell as crystal-clear highs. Switching to Kali were as if you would listen through a towel (i am exaggerating a bit, but the difference is immense) and switching back to Neumanns were as if you were back getting fresh air again. I were using Yamaha HS 80 M (almost identical to the newer H8) i would even take the H8 all day everyday over the Kalis. But in comparison to the small, toy-looking, cheapest Neumann KH80 the Kalis are trash. Completely underwhelmed and dissapointed. Gonna bring them back in 2 days and keep the Neumanns.

I love them, it really surprised me how much low end you get from a 5 inch sub. I got some isoAcoustic pads on the bottom of them to clear up the rumble the low end was giving me on my desk. I feel like it's just real easy to reference something with these, and you don't really have to spend a lot of time on it, I just get my mix to sort of match the low end on another track and it translates really well.

The IN-5's sound waaaaay thinner in comparison to the Neumanns, which really really bums me out -'cause Im getting mine in two days. BUT - Im thinking: Could this be due to the fact that Fluff turned them sideways with the bass ports closest to his ears? I heard some comparisons on youtube where some guy experienced more low end in that position. Maybe fluff is simply turning the kick and bass down because it is being jammed down his throat on the sides like that, as a compensation... Any thoughts?? @Kali Audio
@SixStringViolence3 жыл бұрын
I think it's more due to the fact that Fluff is more used to mix on his Neumans. Your ears needs time to adapt to new monitors/speakers, even if they are the greatest and best ones. And if it's the other way around it's even harder.
@catojrgensen89123 жыл бұрын
@@SixStringViolence No, I dont buy it. The bottom end/low mids on kick, snare and bass guitar shouldn't virtually disappear on a professional (and pretty neutral) monitoring system unless there is something wrong. I WOULD expect the full frequency spectrum to differ slightly but NOT chunks of essential low end information gone missing - like mixing on a pair of logitech computer speakers from the 90's. (yes im trolling, lol, but you catch my drift?) But since then I have gotten the Kali's with sonarworks in a VERY bad sounding but semi-acoustically treated small basement room - and I like them.

I just got the Adam T8V's and wanted to get the Kali LP6 to pair with them for the mids, but now you have me thinking the IN5's are worth the extra money. I want the Adams to be my general use/moveable monitors. And need some flat mid range to be the main mixing speakers. Good review.
@MichaelSorrentino13 жыл бұрын
I thought the mix on with the Neumann sounded better, personally. It had more bass and seems more glued together while the Kali mix was very mid-range heavy where it basically sounded like all guitar. The KH mix sounds far superior. The Kali mix sounds extremely rolled off in the lower bass and sounds small, which is placing the driving drums further back into the mix, while the KH mix sounds fully balanced and full range. I would have thought that the Kali being smaller speakers you would have boosted the bass rather than cut it. Quite odd. (Listening on PSI A25M via Prism Callia)

Listening here on Kali IN-5, the Neumann mix sounds ok, IN-5 sounds far too thin. Since I hear the difference on IN-5, it's difficult to draw any conclusion from such comparison. I've only started working on the IN-5 yesterday, but they sound very promising. The soonest release I'll be mixing on them will come out some time next year, but for example I wouldn't mix this differently on IN-5: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6LFomCgdrKVetk - that's one of my recent mixes which I made almost entirely on IK iLoud Micro Monitors :D

@3ATTR1X2 жыл бұрын
@@catojrgensen8912 I have always had room issue, having a sub added to the problem. I use sonarworks which kind of fixed the problem. I also have 3 different headphones that have profiles within sonarworks (its not absolute) The profile freq adjustment for the ATH-M50x adds too much 1khz into the headphones, but in sonarworks there is a 0-100% adjustment available. Otherwise I spent a bit of coin on acoustic treatment that worked well. If there are wonky frequencies going on (stand waves and troughs) then some sort of freq adjustment correction will help. In the end you want to be hearing closer to the source with minimal mixing where all you are doing is mixing into the room, so that it sound great in your room only with a whole lot or room issues. Hearing my other headphones with the eq adjustment profiles, they sound totally different, the HD200 sound like a completely different headphones when flattened (eq corrected), in the end its all about the music translates better, phone speakers, car.
