I only use Lucas red and tacky mixed with 0w40 European motor oil, always used synthetic oil but when I found the 0w40 it was way better in all temperatures. I make it to the consistency between honey and peanut butter. Thickens the oil so it stays and the oil makes it great in hot weather and cold weather. Been using it for 20 years plus.

I too have mixed up a few batches of Ed's red. Works very well for gun cleaner and if you are going out for a quick shoot, it works pretty well for a gun oil. Maybe with the lanolin it would work for long term storage. I have never mixed in with the lanolin

Are you an expert in lubricity? George Fennell created Weapon Shield and also FP-10 which he sold Shooter's Choice FP-10 has changed over the years and not for the better. Been using Weapon Shield since 2015 on many different firearms and they continued to function without issues. Did you shoot them for a period of time, was there any malfunctions due to lack of visible lubrication? Frog Lube will sometimes look dry but when you start shooting it tends to creep out of no where and seep in to areas where you didn't want it to be and why I don't use it. Some lubricants leave just a small film (barrier) and perform just fine, have you used a lubricant called Strike Hold? Leaves a dry film after you wipe off the excess and believe was develop for dry dust criminates which causes issues for most lubricants and greases.
@1stNPrep Жыл бұрын
As I stated before. When you apply weapon shield, it is the slickest lube I have ever felt. However. for storage it does not stay in place. I have noticed this with my hand guns as well. I will apply Weapon Shield right before I go shoot and it is amazing. I just don;t think its a good long term storage solution .

Most gun lubricants are penetrating oils, so that you can get effective coverage with even poor application technique. Some gun oils also leave a dry lubricant when they evaporate (particularly true for evaporating oils - their design is to flush contaminants out when in a liquid state and then leave behind a dry lubricant when they evaporate - so you don’t end up with a tacky residue that dirt can adhere to. If you use a gun regularly you can safely use a non-drying oil - it will cook off from the hot parts, and the non-hot parts are generally either pretty well protected from grime (triggers) or are reciprocating and will clear themselves off through motion (the bolt). Where these (generally heavier) oils run into problems are things like the recoil spring.

Funny tings happen below 18*F with oils. I start by freezing it. So that rules out most oils. It can be a simple as taking warm gun outside in the cold. And having it condense and freeze. I use 3 in 1 or hoppes. I have wondered about using lithium grease because it does stay where you put it. And passes freeze test.

For a long long time, I used a liter of Break Free LP. I don't think they offer it anymore under that name. But it was marketed at as a lubricant/preservative. MUCH thicker than CLP, very similar in consistency to Lucas, if not slightly thicker. It stuck very well and was very slick. It also didn't migrate very readily. I remember cleaning a rifle, putting it up for 1.5 years before taking it out again. While yes, there was some runout, the bore and the bolt still had a skin of oil on it. I'm down to my last maybe 20ml of it. It's oxidized quite a bit and has a funny smell, so I don't use it. I've been using a mix of moly grease + full synthetic motor oil almost exclusively.

I am using Amsoil Dominator Series Grease (It is FDE in Color :) & I am using the same oil my truck uses Amsoil Signature Series. 15w30. I mix the Grease and the signature series oil together. We used to do this all the time with LUBRIPLATE and ATF to help keep the LUBRIPLATE from drying out and to keep it where it needed to be. I use this mixture in the AR's per the old school manufacturer M16 Manual back when they used to recommend LSA. If you take that service manual and watch the School of the American Rifle channel how he mixes his lube and how he teaches all his classes and lubes his service work as a gunsmith you can see they are very similar to the old school service manual. I use the signature series oil as it has a high TBN , 4 ball wear result and very high detergent package to help break up carbon and keep flowing. It allows the action to operate and keeps the carbon from acting like an abrasive. The penzoil "Ultra Platnium" has really good additive package as wel just not as high TBN. If you clean your guns all the time the TBN may not be a issue at all and i don't think it really is. I would be curious what your tests \ results would be.

Now 70 years old. Still tough as an old brick firehouse. Been telling you modern day "preppers" for years and decades, to little or no avail to get rid of the AR15s. AKs, Uzis, whatever. In the military, if your weapon fails, the armorer will either fix it or replace it. Not so in a SHTF scenario. Good rule of thumb......If it's semi-auto and a centerfire, DUMP IT. I sleep good at night knowing my Marlin 336 30-30, my scoped Winchester Model 70, Pre-64 of course, sighted for 300 yards, and my 870s and my Mossy are close at hand with about 45 or more years of competition, training, practice and research under my belt. A good .22 rifle is a must also. In the worst case scenario, ammunition and its components is more precious than gold. EVERY single round of ammunition counts. 1S1K. Period. Nite nite ladies.
