What is the essence of Chinese food? There is no singular answer because as with any country, it varies per region. We tried authentic Szechuan and other regional specialties from Hong Kong and Taiwan to learn more about one of the most loved cuisines of the world as told by Filipino Chinese Historian, Anson Yu, from Old Manila Walks. Join Chef Martin as he ventures into the secret parts of Metro Manila, specifically Pasay City, to unravel the flavors of some underrated restaurants in the Philippines.

I like the point how he said we should see ourselves people to people. Ang hirap minsan wag maging biased or impartial especially if you put geopolitics into account. Pero we should all remember that a country's people is not its government. Di dapat ma-prejudice against the citizens dahil lang sa government nila. ...Thanks for the Chinese resto tour. Bonus na bansa pa, Taiwanese dessert!

This is a good episode. It’s true that we get intimidated when trying to eat in a Chinese restaurant because most of the time people are not familiar with the food and the menu is always written in Chinese. This definitely gives a different view on Chinese restaurants. I super love Chinese food and will definitely try these restaurants soon! Well done, FEATR! 🥂

This is very educational. I learned that in some parts of China, it's very dry and they need to sweat so they put herbs and spices to their food to make them sweat, thus, avoiding arthritis. That's their belief. Awesome!

Yum. Ever since i left china after working there for a year, i realized just how much of thier regional cuisine is mostly unknown outside of china. Cantonese is the most obvious that we have locally, but as the hosts pointed out, the mainstream ones is localized already. Even the second featured cuisine, sichuan, has some familiar things that were adapted by cantonese restaurants, but not the fried spicy fish soups/curries which i learned to love the most when i tried it in china. Sana there is a part 2, baka they can go find more less known things like xinjiang cuisine, hunan cuisine, dongbei cuisine, maybe even yunnan cuisine. But i never personally found those yet, so hard to say.

I feel so much closer with our Chinese side of the culture. They were there long before the Spaniards arrived and traded goods and crafts with our ancestors, they were there during the Spanish takeover and colonial period, they were there when the Japanese attacked, they were there when the Americans took over, they were there long after this and still are. A quarter of us have Chinese ancestry even if it is 5%. Our language, cuisine and traditions were influenced. Sure, I do get the "Why are they taking over everything?" opinion, I get the disdain caused by the tension at sea, but I don't want to blame the people who want a better life and move abroad, if anything it is an honour people come to our country and think it is an opportunity, we do the same as OFW. Can't talk about the Chinese government though... as they make their own people suffer too, so no wonder some want to leave.

Because that’s what your new colonial masters feed you to distance you from a people that never once try to colonize it you. These white snakes project their own colonial ambitions on to others while they are doing everything then can to rule over non whites. Believe it or not most Chinese people like their own government, and the Americans are full of crap pretending to be good while invading countries across the world.

the Chinese govt lifted 80 million people out of poverty and their standard of living is much higher than that of the USA. the ones that leave the country (yes the ones you see in the PH) do so in pursuit of more unsavory activities and grey area careers because they can get away with it elsewhere, same can be said about South Korean nationals in the PH. makes sense that Filipinos don't have a good impression of of Chinese people since it's mostly the bottom of the barrel that immigrate. same thing with Westerners moving to the PH, except Filipinos still have white-worship stockholm syndrome mentality from the colonial days it seems lol and more recently k-worship thanks to hallyu.

There are a lot of good points in the video the camera work is excellent, but the dialogue between the two is drowned by the background noise and it becomes more pronounced when the audio transitions from spoken dialogue to music. I'm sure a lot was edited out but at the end of the day.... I'm not sure if the video was actually recommending the restaurants, because after watching it for the first and only time.... I didn't get the real message of the video...I hope the next one will be better... I'm looking forward to the next one.
