Great honest review Broomy - very entertaining! Although its overall a better all round package than a VE (mine looks 25 years old next to a VF like yours), it annoys me that they still have a heap of niggles and the dealer experience to try and sort them is still painful - You wont be alone there! You are bang on fuel econ too. My Stock 6L Calais gets anywhere between 8.5 (down hill on EastLink) or 18+ If pottering around the inner north at 40 km/h - the avg speed has a massive bearing on the fuel econ of these big motors and a lot of people seem to miss that.

I own a 2016 VF SS-V Redline and overall its a really great car. Decent power from the LS3 but lets face it another 50-60 hp in stock form would have been nice, steering feels great, car handles and stops well with the Brembo brakes. Other features such as lane departure warning, collision alert, parking assist with self parking, heads up display, beautifully laid out dials and AC controls are all excellent and the interior design is on orders of magnitude better than the VE! The exterior looks tough as nails! I love it for what it is but it definitely isn't perfect. In terms of build quality its the best Holden has produced no doubt, I have had to replace a few rusty screws and most of the check strap nuts in the door jams had to be replaced which I did myself. I had pointed them out when I took the car back to Holden for servicing but they did nothing about it. Mine has been either covered or garaged the whole time but the wiper backing panel is already starting to lose some of its black coating which is quite disappointing. I'll end up having to remove and repaint that eventually. The door locking system fuzzy logic is at times very poor and the car wont either unlock or lock properly, no matter how many times you press the remote buttons or the door handle buttons. I have had the steering column lock check message come on about a dozen times in the time I have owned the car and Holden simply cannot do anything about it. They told me they had a look at it and apparently "fixed" the fault but the message still pops up from time to time. Other little niggles like missing trim options such as height adjustable seat belts, no heated mirrors, no sunglasses holder and poor cabin lighting are annoying but easy to overlook. But the worst thing that bugs the absolute crap out of me the most is the head unit / infotainment system. Its utterly woeful! The sat nav is horrendously dated even after an update and the menu system sloppy, laggy and clumsy to use. And the fact you have to have the head unit turned on to use it as it won't operate independently is also stupid. No Android Auto or Apple Car play either is for a car of this era is simply inexcusable. No CD player nor internal storage means having to put up with a USB stick which constantly has to index every single frigg'n time the radio is turned on is also flat out shit house. And for what ever reason the head unit decides to play something completely different to what you were listening to on your previous drive which is painfully irritating as you then have to negotiate the terrible menu system in order to find the music you were listening to before. And forget about the voice command feature, it basically doesn't work at all, you can repeat the same clear voice command to it over and over and it basically cannot understand you. Its such a bad system as a whole that on many trips I have worn head phones and listened to music from my phone instead. Fuel economy issues? No arguments at all, Its a big V8 so when it needs fuel I fill it up full stop. Yes it It drinks like a fish, I knew it would especially when you drive it more spiritedly and I accepted that when I chose to buy it. But does get better mileage than any of the V8 powered Commodores I have owned before it. Any regrets buying the car? Absolutely not. I still love it to bits!

WOw thank you, guys my VF Nitrate silver Sedan is fantastic, i put rear brembos on it as well and just to make it sound better, DPE rear mufflers, great stuff guys keep up the great work. :) Guys i think it really depends on the dealer, with mine, i supply the oil and serviceable parts items, and they charge me $100.00 to do the service, the car had a extra warranty and i contacted ACCC to explain that they did not tell me that i had to drive the car over 120KM to get the car serviced and now my local holden dealer is looking after me, i have had only the steering lock system replaced in my 15 SSV redline, just had tyres put on ( last time was 2017, but only due to slow flat and they seen plugs in the tyers which will not pass a roadworthy, plugs were on the walls on the tyers, so got a new set in 2017, otherwise i would have only changed the typers maybe in 2018) and will need pads in about 6 to 12 months and then after about 12 to 24 months in 2022 it will need rotors? So i think i have done really good with my redline, maybe compared to others who have had nothing but issues with it ? But other then those issues, fantastic car amassing to drive only has 50K on the clock. :)

My VF II SS redline LS3 6.2lt (stock) gets pretty much the same fuel economy you talk about. 8.8lt/100km on the highway & 16.8lt/100km city driving. A combo of both types of driving gets 13.8lt per 100 km. But I have to say mine definitely sees revs in the higher range because I have the bi-modal exhaust which is like music to my ears. All in all an honest review boys.

Got an 09 VE Ute Band new its got over 240k kms on it now and the only thing that has ever gone wrong with it was the coolant seals at about 200k. Its been so reliable, wonder if a lot of people have had the same experience you have in terms of those little parts replacement problems. They can be really annoying

Broomy hit the nail on the head. It's not so much the lack of improvements they missed from year to year that killed GMH (and Ford Aus), it's the piss-poor service at the dealer service end of things. Sad, but it had to happen.

Been a ford man all my life and i bought my first holden ever, it was a VF2 Motorsport. Bloody awesome cars they are and it's sad to see no more falcons and commodores. Also i hate that washing machine hose that runs from the air box to the firewall and the fake noise it makes so i blocked it. I also agree on the interior, my falcon cannot compare to my VF2.

I agree and most people I know that holden lost a lot of respect from Aussie buyers with how hard they were to deal with under warranty. The vf model looks great though.thinking to buy one but have noticed a lot for sale that have had to have a fair bit of new parts replaced by the 140k mark. Hope I'm one of the lucky ones 😅.

God, I had a Stinger T4 on pre-order, after driving both 6 and 4 I cancelled my order. The boot is smaller than an i30 with the battery under the spare wheel under the load area and it already had random things that had fallen down in there. The roof wraps around the open doorway so a bugger to get in and not hit your head, the back seat has no room and the car itself is under 1.4m so is a pain to get in and out of or lean in to. With the V6 known for failure and the T4 near as thirsty as your wagon I would run away. KIA also announced there is no Stinger series 2 in planning because it is not selling.

Get the Series 2 version of the very car you have. Series 2 Redline in a wagon. I personally own one and they are fantastic all rounders. The issues which have plagued your car are gone on the series 2. Steering rack has no issues likewise the HVAC. Brembos on all 4 corners. better sounding exhaust and intake sound as you have mentioned.

Jason that's not strictly true. Series 2 are affected by the steering rack issue and they also have problems with fuel injectors failing on the LS3's. Can happen to L77 too, but the LS3 is by far the most common ones that Holden is replacing. That aside there was also some cost cutting in places with series 2, but overall they certainly sound better.

FG MK 2 owner here- agree 100% on the interior for Holden. Ford pretty much gave up by the MK2- example is you cannot see the fucking screen when the sun is in the right spot; reception is sketchy at best; has Bluetooth but that's it. Holden shat all over the Ford's in spades. Great no BS video blokes

You are so right about the fords still being dated. I owned at ba xr6 turbo for about half a year and never really fell in love with it. it just felt old, I then was looking at newer v8 cars with ford and found that most had engine knocks those modulator boss 260 engines are crap. So I started looking at Holden v8 the series 1 ve I will admit is dated but I got the series 2 ve ss Ute thunder and it has better features than my farther’s $60,000 Range Rover evoke it has nav , reverse camera. I love this car and the fuel usage you quoted is completely accurate. BUT the electrical systems in it do let it down the button for the side mirrors stoped working and the navigation system would not work I didn’t even know I had nav until one day it was 40 degrees and it just started telling me were I was then it cramped out again Luckily when I bought the car they offered a warranty with it and Holden fixed it. This happens about a month ago.

Broomy even if you don't do anything else to the wagon, get it tuned. We had a turbo LS ute that had better economy. There are a lot of areas to pull fuel out that just isnt needed. Maybe you guys could T up a shop to do a vid. With regards to tow rigs, its tough now. Too much shit box, sticker kit, truck style junk that's way underpowered. Mrs and I have decided on a GLC300 or GLC43 next. Does a bit of everything we want.

I had the same dilemma when wanting a car with a large enough boot/luggage area for an Engel 12v fridge, a decent towing capacity for a ski boat and space for kids etc without wanting a dual cab ute or wagon or spending a fortune. Ended up with a stock ve 6litre calais wagon, its been ok and yeah I agree with your fuel economy. Also need to do something about the exhaust as you cant hear mine either. You probably dont want a 4wd wagon but I did some testing for Toyota and Lexus a few years back and the 4.0v6 petrol auto Prado I had I thought was ok and did ok fuel economy wise, 200 series cruiser was awful fuel wise and didnt drive any better.

My experience with the fuel economy, with an 08 Calais Wagon, averaging 12.2l/100km, probably 80% highway 20% stop start. Has a catback and does need injectors and a tune though.

most likely they holden put the wrong pads on so the new pads aren't sitting right on the rotor i had that issue with my vz ss from the get go. the old pad never shaked the car.

I got 2016 vf series 2, 90% highway kms every week and get about 630km, full tank to empty and petrol around $110 atm (unleaded 95 is currently hovering $1.69a litre)

Strange about the sound because I have a 2012 VF Calais V wagon, same L77 engine, and sounds great when under it and yes no induction noise until I put the foot down. As for power mine was 35kw higher than Holden claimed when put on the dyno for tuning. The fuel usage is better with the AFM activated than deactivated, 8.8lt/100km v 10.4lt/100km and is same as factory, nothing changed. I can link android auto even though the car system does not have it. Only problems is that type a AC valve leaks so I got it swapped for a better designed item and the wife keeps wrecking rims hitting potholes.

@@madmick3794 No mate, thats far from the only thing it doesnt do - you clearly arent aware of the range of Android Auto features. The MyLink system is very much a poor cousin.. That said, you can get it modified to pickup Android Auto with its screen mirroring and other groovyness. I am very much considering getting it done to my SS. What I find the most annoying with the MyLink system is its complete and utter lack of GPS map updates - like ever. Not an issue on an AA system that has access to the latest google maps all of the time...

Sadly the world is now devoid of family car choices. Try rocking up to your local dealership and they’ll tell you that they have just what you need. “We have just what you’re looking for Sir or Madam, how about this SUV or that SUV, perhaps this ute or that ute, or maybe you’d like a hot hatch.” Good luck finding an affordable rear wheel drive family car that handles, performs and also has a reasonable towing capacity. The compromise is now the twin cab ute which is exactly why it’s outselling everything else in Australia right now.

Holden put a quiet exhaust on the L76/L77's to deaden out the horrible sound you get when the AFM feature kicks in. You'll hear it if you ever get a loud exhaust, and you'll either want to tune out AFM, or go the whole hog and get a DoD delete kit and cam it. Also, I like the look of the VE over the VF. The VF's look too much like a Mazda 6 from the back for my liking.

Had the same issue with buying from ford second hand sold me a gs ute with 7000kms on it with 2 different size front brake rotors drivers side was 328mm and the passenger side had the standard 298mm rotor on it with the bracket and caliper setup for the 328mm, they sold that to me with extended warranty as well cause it was meticulous maintained apparently, Thanks christ thats the only issue the cars had

I drive a VE SSV sedan. An i get 10.5 litres to 11 litres per 100km. Mind you i do a lot of country driving. An my interior is fine.

yeah my V6 VF commodore gets 10.4L/100 so 13L sounds legit for a V8
