First time seeing a match like this . Do they tag the other person to get points ? How are points scored , can they score a point by touching a leg or arm or does it have to be the torso ?

Nobody knows lol. It is impossible to tell and is done only as an excuse to let people do techniques without actually fighting in the streets.

To score a point you need to land a significant clean strike that is visible. They let out a Kiai (short shout) to vouch they landed a solid hit, then this is determined by the referee to either keep playing or score a point if he witnessed a clean strike. If they both hit each other in the same time it doesn’t count. Arms and legs don’t count. Torso, head, and back are allowed. Sweeps can happen too. The different attacks landed scores you more points. Head / torso strike = 1 point, kick to the torso / back = 2 points, kick to the head = 3 points That’s basically it

@@mrnoodles9035 but what your saying refutes me. How can this be? Such a paradox. What if I punch him out is that 3 points or just 1? Okay just 1. But then he kicked me first for 3 points so the score is 3 to 1 him and he is dead and I am alive. So is it better to lose than win? Is this like golf where points are but an illusion? I hate sports and just want to fight outside the ring but they won't let me 🤦‍♂️. Sometimes in sports they cheat and the rules are designed for idiotic purposes which leaves me feeling discontented. I have had bad experiences in sports. Where I come from you have to be the strongest to survive and sports is a joke. We do not beat up sportdo's in the street because sports gives you a pass. It is a game or recreational not fighting. Zero respect for stepping in the ring *spits*.

I participated in point karate tournaments back In the day (70s & 80s). So far removed from real fighting. I used to get frustrated that a man 50 lbs lighter than me could score a point on me that could do no real damage & I could counter with a technique that in real life would have obliterated him, but because he tagged me first he got the point. The particular martial art I practiced eventually went to three two minutes rounds of nonstop sparring, with the four corner judges determining the winner & the Referee was the tiebreaker. Much more realistic & fair.

I completed on the 1980’s and 1990’s within the JKA . This isn’t the kumite I recognise and it’s significantly changed and weaker .

I prefer Full Contact. Points Sparring will get you killed in a street fight. I was trained by A.J. Advincula and one of his best students. I yawned watching this crap.

I agree with you to some degree, but you worry off Karate as it used to be with fighters like Yahara , Tanaka , Mori , Kagawa , Best , Brennan , Hall and Christopher . Not forgetting aiden Trimble . You cannot realistically discount men like that and elevate full contact are the pinnacle of fighting . If you watch the old school JKA karate you were hit and stayed hit . So fast from A to B in speed and you didn’t stand there exchanging blows until someone dropped . There are people of that era who could mix it with anyone and from angles and with speed that you couldn’t stop padded up or otherwise . You can’t duck what you don’t see !
