Abraham Lincoln was quoted as saying “ Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the ax.”
Do you sharpen your own knives or bring them to a professional? If your like me, you've tried to do it yourself with a variety of sharpening tools. I've found that I can sharpen them to a decent edge, but not a professional edge. That's all until I tried the Work Sharp Ken Onion Edition Knife Sharpener. It's easy to learn to use and has professional features such as 5 premium abrasive belts, variable speeds, adjustable angles, and a precision guide. If you watch the video all the way through, you'll see a wide variety of knives that this sharpener can handle. I even sharpened my maul/axe with it.

I already sharpen at least two knives a day by hand. This would make it more fun. I sharpen pocket and dinner knives every other day. The question is, how much does it cost?
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
I believe it's around $129. Somewhere I heard the cost of around .03 per knife to sharpen. Eventually the belts need replacing. On another note, the best carpet guy I've ever seen would spend several minutes sharpening his utility knife before cutting the carpet. He eventually retired, which was a sad day for me as a builder. Sharp knives make a difference.

Just recently picked up 2 ken onion designed Kershaw pocket knives and was blown away by the factory edge they came with and how smooth and tight they are. I go out of my way to purchase U.S. made anything especially tools and knives and I was thinking to myself how I could build a mini belt sharpener as they use at the factory and wouldn’t you know I discovered this sharpener today. The bonus is it’s also a Ken Onion design and I couldn’t be more excited. Once I get through Christmas I’m going to order it for myself. I have many different sharpening systems already but nothing like this. Crazy I was thinking about this and stumbled upon this dream come true. Thanks for the demonstration. Merry Christmas!

@@danlawson3782 - No, I haven't tried the upgraded version. I'm just going off of this video. The Trizor is so fast and easy to get past all 3 stages of sharpening in about 30 seconds per knife. Maybe the new upgraded Onion is better. I don't know. Mark, nice video review. Take note though, the recommended sharpening procedure by Work Sharp is to do the coarsest belt on the same side of the knife until the burr forms on the opposite side. Then move the blade to the opposite side. When you move to the next level of coarseness belt you begin alternating from side to side. Hope this helps.

@Tom John Believe it or not, I got very good results from the first use. I did get better as time went on, but I never ruined any knives. I watched quite a few instructional videos that helped alleviate any beginner mistakes. What takes a little time to master is getting the 'feel' of the sharpener and the blade in hand. Good luck with your entry into the Ken Onion Sharpener. It's a lot of fun coming away with a surgically sharp knife. Be careful, they are sharp ;)

No, I bought it and returned it. It works fine, ,,,,,,but you can achieve the same results or better with other less expensive sharpeners. Here is why; You are suppose to rest the knife against the guide and pull, that works for big knives. But I found that for small EDC pocket knives, only 3/4 of the knife make contact with the belt. The tip of the knife misses the belt using this method, which is "to maintaining the knife resting against the guide and pulling it". If I have to come off the resting guide to sharpen the tip of the knife, (minute 6:35) then you are no longer at the specified angle that makes this tool so appealing. At that point you are simply guessing a sharpening angle. I do believe your video is very informative and you show exactly how the tool works. I just feel is a bit price for my application which is small knives.

@MarkThomasBuilder

The belt only spins in 1 direction. When the knife is on the right side, the belt spins away from the knife edge. When the knife is on the left side, the belt spins towards the knife edge. If you get the blade grinding attachment accessory, then the belt always spins away from the knife edge. Hope that helps. I'm currently using the attachment for all my sharpening.

Awesome video, do you recommend using a Ken Onion sharpener for a sharpening business?
@MarkThomasBuilder
@MarkThomasBuilder Ай бұрын
I've heard that you could use it as a business, but never did a lot of research to see what the pros use. We have a local farmers market with a sharpening business that has a booth. I thought I'd bring a couple kitchen knives there and see if they can do any better and also see what their sharpener looks like.

Look I love my KO sharpening device but don’t use a blade that you really care about and can’t get all the way back to the bolster with it’ll leave a Dip in the blade unless you free hand it. Belts are expensive I’d suggest buying sharpening compound to help belts last longer. On custom knives or your hunting knifes I would learn to freehand those for a real edge. I’m a rookie so take all that for what you want! Lol great video
@MarkThomasBuilder

I'm very happy with the results of this. The one knife that I should probably freehand is a hawksbill design blade, which has a big curve at the end. It's a great knife for opening boxes.

I found that it takes practice and I used another knife that's not too important to me to work with first. I eventually bought the blade grinding attachment, which I use for all my knives. I still get good results with this sharpener though.

Be careful at the beginning and end of your stroke or you'll round over knife points and make a dip in the blade near the handle. Otherwise, I've had mine for almost 10 years and I love it.

doing the thumb thing i learned in 1980 but with a stick of hard plastic that testin other ways to, still can be bought, you are holding thumb way wrong, your holing thumb to flat with zero angle, you must hold thumb at 45 deg . put thunmb nail stright up on table andgoo down half way which is 45 deg, and if less then 45 even better, any half ass sharpening will grab at the angle your thumbis, the first known book was written in late 70's or early 80's i still have his fine stone none of his stones use water and worse oil, the carse gets full of brolen peices of stone you brush off and it leaves a news surface, they go quik but good price, their fine will last 4 ever. I still use it for more like work horse blades or gardening machetes . his name is well known by old timers, John Juranich
