Jay I received all the parts and tools in the mail and finally finished this awesome build! Looks beautiful and the GBA is so much better with this screen and USB-c charging (which I ordered with my kit) is also an awesome upgrade. The build was great BUT there are a few important notes which I didn't pick up in the video: - The plastic shell is a bit softer than the original and does not match very well with the original screws. On the first try it was a pain to fit everything together and required a lot of force to screw everything into place. As a result, the pole which holds the bottom screw inside the battery compartment actually broke off. I managed to glue this back into place with superglue and on the second attempt, with the replacement screws from Hispeedio, everything came together smoothly. I also have one minor crack in another place. - I fitted the upper touch sensor right above where the flex cable sits (this is the most natural place to fit the sensor, I believe I also saw it sitting there in Hispeedio's instructions). However, apparently the flex cable interacts with the sensor and causes it to keep switching between screen modes. Very annoying of course, so I opened everything up again and fitted the sensor more to the right side of the GBA. All in all I never use these sensors and would skip them in a next build. Hope this helps!

2:20 Color Pallettes is not dumb! There are some people who have problems with color. Like my friend who loves retro gaming. He has a problem with bright colors especially Neons. Even brightness adjustment can't do anything with his problem. When he saw some reviews about color palettes in gameboys, he didn't hesitate to buy those gameboy screen kits. He prefer the purple and pink palettes for those are not causing him headaches. Sometimes those kit were made by choice or intentional maybe for some people with those kinds of problem.

At first, I was wondering why add the color pallets, but that makes a lot of sense now. Looking at it now, the colors are too specific for it to only be decoration (other than the GBC pallet). I appreciate the anecdote!! 👍👍

Love this Jake, excellent video as always and genuinely useful getting these comparisons when there are so many screens on the market. Funny that they often use select/L/R because I've been playing a lot of STEPPER and it uses select and L/R for its main control system! So I'm making a GBA with the FunnyPlaying touchpads only my main GBA for that one haha

it seems like the part that separated from your LCD was just the protective housing. they tend to have a plastic frame and foil backing that protects the panel itself. So that plastic frame probably just came separated from the panel which is laminated to the glass.

The main problem with the FunnyPlaying v3 kit is the high failure rate. I've build dozen of the V2 GBAs without a single problem, but four out of ten V3 displays where broken or had vertical lines after a few hours of gameplay! And the v3 shells are fragile, don't tighten the screws to hard or they will break!

Love your content 😊 I'm thinking of buying a screen for my GBA & GBA SP i wanted to ask what's the best screen for each device currently available in 2023? There's so many different names & versions it's a little overwhelming for me lol, also i wanted to ask does the newer V5 screens higher resolution show or is it not worth it? I couldn't find a video of anyone going in to detail about the that aspect, everyone usually just shows the screen & talk about the colours & modes etc.. I've also read some don't do integer scaling for GB/GBC so I'm a little overwhelmed & confused.

I did the part at 6:40 to remove the touch pads and I kinda regret it, now there are a few light leaks (visible only when the screen is fully black), probably because things moved a little when removing the shielding and putting it back on. @JakeSimmons

After installing a bunch on these, I just install the touch pads because it’s difficult to remove the shielding. They aren’t very sensitive so you probably won’t have any issues of them accidentally going off as long as you don’t place them where you commonly touch the game boy. But to answer question, yes you can remove the shielding after, it’s just gonna be a lot harder while it’s stuck to the shell

@JakeSimmons Жыл бұрын
My best guess without seeing it is that something is bridging. I would double check that your solder job isn’t touching anything else around it and/or you didn’t pinch any of the wires when you put the shell together. It’s very common for those things to happen and cause the brightness controls to either not work or go crazy. Especially double check that you solder to the correct pins on L and R and that your select wire isn’t touching any of the vias (tiny holes) around tp2. Hope this helps!

@@JakeSimmons alright I’ll check those out after work. I’ve noticed if I haven’t played in a bit that everything starts working properly again. Then after about twenty minutes it goes haywire again. Not sure if the heat from the motherboard is causing the solder to expand somewhere and bridge maybe and then when it cools it’s good until it heats up again… I’m clearly just throwing spaghetti at the wall with this theory. They didn't have names for the colors either so I just chose color "16" as it looked the closest to the original color I am looking for but it could just be plain clear and not Glacier. It's hard to tell from the pictures cus the lighting varies from shell to shell in the pictures.

@@JakeSimmons Turns out it was just a standard clear / frosted shell lol. Not too bothered it was only an extra 5 bucks ontop of the LCD price. I have found a Glacier shell on Amazon so I'll just use my Dremel to trim it down. I've got one of those flexible extensions for the Dremel that I've used for very similar things so I'm confident I'll do a better job than the Aliexpress guys did on the shell they provided. The shell that came with the LCD V5 kit wasn't great. You could see where they had trimmed it themselves before sending it out.

@@JakeSimmons I have another question, what temperature do you recommend setting the soldering iron to so that it's hot enough to melt the solder but it's not so hot that it damages the screen? I will be using leaded solder
@JakeSimmons
@JakeSimmons 11 ай бұрын
@@ChewyChicken589 leaded solder will melt at a lower temperature than lead free. I use lead free and usually solder at 300°C. I’m not sure how low it melts but you can always test by pushing solder into the tip while testing different temps (with the iron not touching anything else) but google says it can melt as low as 180°C. Hope this helps

It’s because makho asked for an unsaturated color mode to replicate the original colors of the GBA games, however these Chinese companies who manufacture them didn’t understand what he meant. So here we are… with ten unnecessary color modes. 😅

Would there be any issues from me modding it to have an IPS screen and use a flash card? Since its an old console would it just strain it too much and destroy whatever lifespan is left of it? Will battery life be too poor on the default brightness? [no soldering experience] _ i was thinking about buying the hispeed kit and was worried my gba's just too old for using this and a flash card

I use a flash cart and it’s fine. Slightly less battery life but there are solderless drop in rechargeable battery mods that will help with that

Solderless drop in rechargeable battery mods? That sounds crazy. That's good i mean I've had my GBA for like over 20 years so my main concern is it just getting too strained from using an IPS screen. But in fairness it hasnt been used in like 15 years. I just dont want to buy it and suddenly my gba's just too old to function

I just had this mod kit last week It seems perfect but there is an issue with the power led It keeps flickering all the time. I tried with the regular lcd and it doesnt happen. I think Ips screen consumes too much power that leads to this flicker.

Dirty power switch + low voltage batteries (NiMh)? These IPS screens suck a lot of power. Clean the switch first, if it persists then swap batteries to 1.5v AA (assuming you’re not already).

I’d either buy it with a shell from the AliExpress link or wait and buy it from ZedLabz when they get the listing going. Or if you’re willing to try trimming, you can do that to pretty much any GBA shell that isn’t funnyplaying’s laminated kit shell

It’s gotta be possible to remove it, but I’m not sure how sticky the tape is. You might end up damaging it before getting the chance to solder :/ If you use flux and don’t put heat on the board/screen for more than a second at a time, you should be fine. Flux helps so much

Yes but you need to make sure that the end of the wire isn’t touching any metal or any parts of the edges of the shell. The wires still act as a touch pad, just with less surface area
