In that last game against Chicago, Bird's back was so bad that he was wearing a back brace. And if you watch the game, you could plainly see he was moving like a 85 year old man. Poor Horace Grant must still have nightmares on how an old and injured Bird was cooking him all game long. LOL.

Often overlooked is Larry's Leadership Skill. Larry's First option was always Pass if open. Larry's mantra to teammates from day one: "You get open and I will hit you!" Larry would Box out, rebound, dive for loose balls. He made his teammates play better. Everything Larry did was in the context of team FIRST basketball. He demanded accountability of teammates or you did not remain a Boston Celtic.

Larry Bird hurt his back in the 1985 offseason. He won another MVP the next season but he had back problems from that injury forward. He was never the same and he was only 6 years into his career! Then he broke his back in 89. It got so bad he would sometimes go the hospital the night before a game to get into traction for his back. Then he had to stretch 2 hours just to be able to play. He could barely put his shoes on. During the game vs Indiana that he broke his face - he had a back brace on during that game. The brace is one reason he hit his face in the game. He couldn’t move with the brace on. Even some Indiana players said that they would tell their grandkids about what Bird did that day!

Dude, Worthy said he would rather guard Jordan than Bird. Jordan made you look slow, Bird made you look stupid. And if you think about it, the reason Jordan's scoring percentage is so high is because he slammed the ball the majority of the time. Bird would kill you anywhere on the floor without having to slam it.

In Bird's rookie year, he took a previously 29-win Celtics team to the playoffs. His rookie statistics were so dominating that he beat Magic Johnson for The Rookie of the Year Award 63 votes to 3 even though Magic and the Lakers had just won the National Championship. The next year Bird took that same Celtics team to win the Championship themselves. This was years before Bird had that famous line-up around him. Not a bad first two years. lol

Now, i think a criteria for the GOAT debate should be “can a compilation video be made of your GOAT half assing it? Missing big shots? Faking injuries? Missing clutch shots or avoiding taking them altogether?” Can’t do that with Larry. Now be honest with yourself… can you say that about your GOAT? More simply put “can a compilation video be made of your GOAT doing non-GOAT things?”

I agree! LeBron didn’t dive for loose balls like Larry. LeBron never has 50/40/90. LeBron never rebounded like Larry. LeBron needs to dribble the ball down to impact the game and Larry didn’t need the ball to impact a game. Larry couldn’t travel, or carry the ball to get buckets like LeBron. Larry wanted the last shot, and the pressure. Larry would tell you what he was going to do. LeBron doesn’t do that. Larry got injured and still played harder than LeBron does. Larry played full seasons most of his career. LeBron takes several games off a year. Larry makes his teammates better and he did it instantly when he came out of college. Bird for the win

Russell and Chamberlain each won three straight MVPs. Also, Bird actually injured his back building a new driveway for his mom after the '85 season (despite that he won another MVP in '86). Unfortunately, his back got far worse after the achilles surgery on his feet. He just wasn't the same after that (yet he was still effective). I don't put Bird above Jordan because I think he was a better player, although obviously there's a good argument for that, but because I just like watching him play more. Everything Jordan does is amazing, but it's all stuff that you expect him to do. Larry was unpredictable. As soon as he passed or received the ball you knew he was about to do something, but you never knew what it was. It's just good drama. Bird's in the GOAT conversation, but I don't really care about all that. I like Bird because he's just so freaking fun to watch. Also I like Isiah Thomas. He's a bit of a dickhead, but I like him. He broke his right index finger, badly, before even entering the league. In the summer before his rookie season, he played a casual game of softball and got a knuckleball to his right index finger, which never really recovered. Google for images, it's all bent and swollen. Then look at the Legend's improved shot percentages, and see how they evolve as he gets used to this minor handicap. The NBA never saw a healthy prime Larry Joe Bird. Which is just as well, because if he had brought the Celtics from a 29W team to the championship in his rookie season, there would never have been a GOAT debate, and the Celtics would have done to the 80s what they'd already done to the 60s.

Larry was one of the best to ever play the game. But Jordan changed the game of basketball. The high flying, the speed. The fast game you see now happened because of Jordan. But yet, Bird dominated him

This video is good. One mistake though. Broke his back before the 85/86 season,his best yr statistically by the way. So even more impressive that he played from 85-93 with a trashed back. GOAT

He hurt it twice, in '85 shoveling gravel on his ma's driveway, in '89 in a collision with a teammate during practice. It wasn't good after '85, but it got worse after '89.

Completely off topic, but I'm genuinely curious.... I had some friends back in the day who used afro sheen, and I don't remember it being that shiny at all. Especially your beard. Is there some kind of glitter or something involved or is it just your lighting? Whatever it is, it looks good.

If you were a Bulls fan back then, you would understand why I freaking abhor Thomas and every other Pistons players with the exception of Joe Dumars and Salley. They mauled the Bulls in the late 80s. Who would have thought I would forgive Rodman and love what he did on the court in a Chicago jersey.

My GOAT Team: Jerry West @ 1, Elgin Baylor @ 2, Larry Bird @ 3, Hakeem Olajuwon @ 4, Wilt Chamberlain @ 5 ... Name the team that Beats them and how?
@c99kfm
@c99kfm 3 күн бұрын
Oooh, those are some BAD men, and matches my own all-time dream-team, except I swap Baylor for Jordan. I have zero confidence in claiming ANY team would defeat Bird, much less playing with four of the greatest players of all time. But let's give it a try: PG: John Stockton - over Magic because I need the defense against West, and Stockton can toss 3-pointers. SG: Kobe Bryant - arguably the second greatest shooting guard of all time, and clutch on both ends of the court. SF: Michael Jordan - who else could I possibly try to counter the Legend with? PF: Tim Duncan - another solid defender who rose to the occasion many times. 10-0 record against Hakeem. C: Nikola Jokic - my biggest defensive liability, partly because I can't think of a counter to Wilt, partly because I want that offense to counter Bird's offense. On defense, Kobe and MJ back each other and Stockton up, Stockton and Duncan go man to man on their positions, with Wilt being handled through trying to prevent him getting the ball and leaving him room to pass off the ball rather than just making baskets. Jokic directs the defense and clogs up lanes. On offense, Stockton or Jokic finds the right play, Duncan finishes near the rim and Kobe and MJ keeps the defense honest.
