I am an Ohio boy. I watched Lebron in H.S. I watch him today. But I remember the 70s and 80s when the game evolved to its highest level. It was tough physical play. Lebron has never had to play in those conditions. Maybe he would thrive. Maybe. The game has devolved with the rules protecting players from any kind of altercation and real strategy. The game today is soft and dumbed down. I am 75. I watched the game as it became lesser and lesser. For me it is Bird, Magic and Jordan so close but different. Put those three on a team in their prime along with two other competent players and they would totally rule this please don't touch me league. I don't think they would lose a game. Today's NBA is almost unwatchable. No personality. No Toughness. No strategic play.

you're doing a great job of listening and analyzing what you're hearing and seeing, and coming to solid conclusions that so many other reviewers miss. i appreciate the intelligence and curiosity you're bringing to the table to learn about the history of the sport you love. here's a thought i'd love you to consider ... these two players marked the end of the beginning AND the beginning of the end. they were treated on the court by the refs, for most of their careers, like any other player. but they started the era of star players getting star / preferential treatment from the refs, who now seem to work overtime to "protect" the league's marquee players.

I have seen a talk between Larry, Isiah and Reggie Miller. During it, Isiah said that Larry had basically saved his career by going and saying what he did. Larry replied that he just said the truth. Because that is what mattered. Isiah did have a little problem though with Larry replacing him with a different coach with the Pacers many years later. Larry replied that he had just did what he thought was best. It was an interesting conversation. Its on KZbin "Basketball Stories: Indiana Glory with Larry Bird, Reggie Miller, and Isiah Thomas | NBA on TNT" if anyone is interested. They enjoyed themselves.

Not many people know this, but in 87, when Bird missed that shot, he was playing with a broken right hand. He had got in a bar fight the night before, and they kept it quiet until the next year.

I was looking for this comment before I made it myself! I thought he'd damaged his elbow in that bar fight as well. Still, broken right hand did muck with his aim considerably. When Magic made that hook shot Mchale was covering him and what they didn't say was that Magic got by Mchale because he couldn't go left. He was playing with a broken foot. The Celtics were wounded warriors. Ainge had hip problems. Parish had badly sprained ankle. Larry had hurt his back. In 85 building the driveway to his mom's house. He hired his brother to do it and he didn't show. What they didn't know at the time was that Larry had a congenital condition that made him have a narrow nerve canal in his back. They will go into this more in the next part. In 1989 he had double Achilles surgery where they detached both Achilles removed bone spurs and reattached them. Then in 1991 he broke his back in practice and ended up having a piece of disk removed to relieve the nerve pain. He still came back and played Jordan. I watched Larry play and also read his books. I wish you would take the time to watch the video called 4 crazy stories that prove Larry Bird is the toughest nba player. Great react and can't wait to see to see part 4!❤

The 3 was used purposefully, it was a dagger when needed, it wasn't the shot you assumed every guy was going to take every single time they have the ball in their hands. I don't know how we regain that aspect of the game without some major rule changes.

This is a great documentary, my only 'complaint' is that most pauses are mid-sentence during the narration, and then not rewound a couple of seconds after the pause. Yes, Magic and Bird took the NBA to its peak, and Michael Jordan rode the shockwave. Makes a good story, but that's not all. Basketball is a team sport. Magic and Bird had great teams and great coaches to back them up, to bring out the best in each player. Jordan never beat Bird, so the story goes, but the reality is that Jordan never beat Bird's Celtics. Jordan didn't become a champion until he had Scottie Pippin and the rest of the 90s Bulls backing him up. And those teams do matter. Five (at least) Hall of Fame players on the 80s Lakers. Five Hall of Famers on the 80s Celtics. Both teams had great benches that pushed the starters every day in practice. Hall of Fame coaches. Those are the unsung heroes of Magic versus Bird.

Rodman was from the projects and had never had a white guy serve him on the court! lol Thomas backed Rodman cuz he was the Capt of the team. Bird was the one that saved both their rears! If it hadn't been for the way that Bird dealt with it......their careers might have been over.

One thing that needs to be realized is that basketball was created by a white man. The game was invented by Springfield College instructor and graduate student James Naismith in 1891, and has grown into the worldwide athletic phenomenon we know it to be today. Springfield College students continue to be innovators and leaders in their fields. It was crazy because of a severe winter weather event that did not allow the students to go outside to participate in sports. There was a time that basketball was predominantly white. But as always the Wheels of Time can change things.

Little fact that gets overlooked. Magics Baby skyhook in the last few seconds should not have even happened. When the second free throw was missed it clearly went out of bounds off a Lakers hand. Should have been Celtics Ball. Celtic win the Game and The Championship and its 4-4 between Bird and Magic instead of 5-3. One poor officials call changed history in a big way
@mikewatts86715 күн бұрын
Magic was my guy back in the day, but man he really was stretching to justify things back then. In more recent years, he's become much more authentic and truthful, but some of the things he said about that time period are cringy. Yeah maybe he did need to have that personna and side of him to achieve what he did, just like Larry needed to be guarded and private to achieve what he did.
@soramirez547313 күн бұрын
actually on OFFENSE as an ISO scorer yea Melo was VERY similar to Bird, GREAT observation.. they could both post low and high, face up and drive, step back for jumpers, 3 pointers, catch and shoot.. Melo just wasnt AS GOOD.. More athletic i guess, but not as good as bird was. Plus melo didnt MOVE without the ball like Bird did, he didnt PASS OR REBOUND like bird did which is sad cuz Melo was a good rebounder and passer, he just wasnt interested int those things, especially on the Knicks (im an ex knicks fan sadly) and he certainly wasnt interested in defense. that game he score 70, he had like ZERO stats in EVERY other category except turnovers. AND the Knicks lost that game.

Magic wasnt an all around SCORER, he posted and drove, and could spot up.. but as a PLAYER he was as all around as you can get.. double double for his CAREER (19 points and 11 assists) and ONLY Bigs are double double guys with points and rebounds (Stockton was a double double guy with assists too and points) Jordan and Lebron are NOT double double guys.. Magic ALSO averaged 7.5 rebounds for his career as well as 1.9 steals per game. He shot 54% from the floor (again he was a great post player as a 6'9 point guard).. and yea he was a lethal passer from the post as well, not only in transition.. He wasnt a great shooter, and his defense could be sus..

They don't have to protect the players today. For every 1 that gets hurt, 1000 are waiting to slide on in that are just as, if not more, talented. We all know someone who would be amazing in the NBA but, for one reason or another, didn't go down that path or wasn't made that easy for them. Bring the competitiveness back to the NBA! It might be the only chance it has to survive. I don't enjoy the love fest that goes on now, nor do I enjoy watching guys take 100 3pt shots a game. Get back in the paint, take some chances. God forbid you see a player attempt a skyhook today.
