It's so nice to have a children's show with deeper themes that doesn't convey them by constantly talking down to the audience. Monkie Kid really really treats the viewer with maturity and respect.

2:04:12 the reason for the change from flying bark studios to wild brain was because flying park did not have the time to animate monkey kid because of the various amount of projects they already had been working on and because of that since it was last minute, that didn’t leave wild brain enough time before the season’s due date

A shame a lot of people dismiss it as a Ninjago ripoff despite having nothing to do with each other besides than the Asian influence. I’m glad they went for the anime esque animation vs the CG that a lot of the other Lego shows do and I feel they did a good job using the Journey to the West lore which after watching stuff like Netflix’s Monkey King fumble in that regard I can definitely appreciate.

From what I have heard the writing is the best out there for a Lego show. 2:04:17 I'm pretty sure what happened is that Flying Bark is taking on more and more new animated projects, Including the new Avatar animated movie that will come out soon, so they just don't have the time to work on MK anymore, so Lego enlisted Wildbrain to take over the show, but they didn't have that much time, so the quality of the animation is a bit rough, but hopefully Wildbrain is settled in now and will take more time to perfect the animation and make it the best it can be because a lot of the time in season 5, the animation change is very noticeable and not in a good way, but most of the time, I don't mind the animation, it's obviously a big step down from what we're used to, but the animation is still watchable and the show is still very very good.

@@brickdragon7131 what I mean is that the Buddha is not presented in the actual story. He's referenced once in a season one gag and then totally dropped. Tang Sanzang being a thing has implications of Buddha's presence, but the reason for the journey westward (the scriptures) is never brought up, and Tang Sanzang is instead characterized as an agent of the heavenly bureaucracy. Similarly, Buddha's role in ultimately subduing Sun Wukong is given instead to the Jade Emperor. Beyond a small gag and the general implication that Buddhism exists, Buddha's whole role from the Journey to the West is instead given to the court of heaven.

@@brickdragon7131 It's pretty clear Monkie Kid has steered clear of actually incorporating Buddha, the character, into the story beyond a single reference. I don't know why. I've heard some speculate it's to avoid causing religious offense, but I honestly have a hard time buying that.

Really enjoy the video, but there's a slight oversight when it comes to Wukong's plan in season 3. Never once is it even suggested that he planned on Mei getting sacrificed to get the Samadhi Fire. While he did hide the fact that she was the fourth ring, he did it to not scare the team away from collecting the rings. He was actually planning on trying to take on the power of the Fire himself to get it out of her. It's why he tells the team not to start the ritual without him. Did he know how he was going to do that? Absolutely not. He was very much going about it as a bridge he'd cross when he got there, but nonetheless, he wasn't planning on her getting hurt. It's still terrible that he lied. He gets called out for it by Mei herself. But this wasn't him trying to trick someone into becoming a martyr, but rather the result of him constantly approaching situations with the mindset of 'he can fix it before it becomes a problem'.
@claudius33594 ай бұрын
And he's done this in the book too.In the Ginseng fruit tree arc (the baby looking thing that Wukong sent to MK in Ping Pong Panic),he uprooted an ancient sacred tree out of rage and the owner imprisons his group for it.He then convinces the sage and Tripitaka that he can fix it,and basically says "Yeah I did that,so what lol" to the (other) immortal sages that he asked help to.He only revealed how desperate and clueless he is when he arrived in Guan Yin's place. Ginsengfruits also seems to be a part of his plan since they're meant to provide longevity.But don't think he'd have time or chance to retrieve it from Sandy's house when LBD attacked.

This show got me into lego and was the last push i needed to get me to read the full 4 volumes of Journey To The West properly and now that ive seen it its really hard to watch anime because 90% of the tropes are ripped right from it with little change. I was very caught of guard be the Spider demon Sisters to be the Anime Hot Spring episode, but now i get to share that detale. Ive been hyperfixated on this show like none other for the past 2 years. Definitely one of the best shows I've seen since Gravity Falls and Avitar. I am still amazed. Because Monkie Kid truly is something special and something that is very rare for Lego shows. No offense here,but the fact that you acknowledge how deep the story is and knows how to strip down the layers of Wukong's characters but still gets a lot of things wrong,is a testament to how well done this show is and how committed they are to adapt the story. Wukong has a lot of instances where he means well but he got slandered or blamed because the way he defends Tripitaka is basically becoming a Tang Dynasty's Doomguy,as in doing insane amounts of violence (Also,can't say Tripitaka is perfect either in the novel,but I kinda don't blame him since Wukong is almost always on that demon time in the book). And I think that kind of complexity is also what's going on in season 3.I don't think his intention is purely malicious with keeping secrets.We've seen him being concerned about the ritual starting earlier and rushing to stop it.And then we see the "That's not a good plan!" scene that seems illogical,but matches his character in the book: He's not that great about planning,but he shoulders all of the responsibility & problems on his own.What he's good at is often pranks to amuse himself for a short term,which is a polar opposite to how Macaque is able to take advantage of Wukong's botched plan and make it to benefit his own survival.Wukong in the book literally uses the same strategy in fighting water demons over and over after it fails.He also pretends to be alright to everybody before admitting that he can't actually bare it.He doesn't only act that way in LMK,but also towards Tripitaka,Nezha,Li Jing,immortal sages,and other deities.That's why I think S3 and S5 final battle is so important,since it represents that you shouldn't always carry your burden alone. And I think they're being meta (typical Lego) with Sandy,cause that's how he is in the book.The entire point of him is that he's wise but too naïve or not brave enough to speak up.He lets Tripitaka kick out Wukong even though he knows Pigsy is slandering him (LMK's Sandy is kind of an upgrade from that tho).His entire thing is how he contrasts Wukong who kills people left and right even though,personally,he's the most terrifying in the group since he ate a lot of humans before the journey.And don't worry,from how they treat his character in Season 5,it looks like we're gonna get more about Sandy in the future.

Now that you mention it, that does explain why I’ve been seeing less Monkie Kid sets in stores since 2021. The last set I remember seeing was the Flower Fruit Mountain. Which is a shame because kids would absolutely love getting sets like these. I’m glad they’re getting marketed in Asia. It kinda makes me envious not to see that for Ninjago. 😂 I think what I love about Monkie Kid is the story. Like Ninjago, we see a group of heroes go on fun and exciting adventures. However, unlike Ninjago, the characters go through so much that end up having a significant impact on the main characters. Especially MK. I don’t think we’ve seen any Lego series until Ninjago recently where the trauma and experiences aren’t brushed off in the next season, rather they follow them. While the Lady Bone Demon may have been defeated in Season 3, she still has a large presence that haunts MK throughout the series. Yet MK still keeps going on. Now I won’t say it’s better than Ninjago, but it’s by far my favorite Lego series right besides the show. And the animation…oh man, it’s such a beautiful series. Even if season 5’s animation is a bit of a downgrade, the story and heart is still there. Another thing I want to say is how well the series did the “Demon power within” plot better than how Ninjago handled it in Crystalized. It’s not brushed aside or discarded, but an important part of MK’s journey I have no idea how to watch Monkie Kid either. I just watch it on KZbin or the Google Drive. Overall, Monkie Kid is a 10/10. Edit: Wait, you speak French? That’s kinda cool! And I think the animators of WildBrain were told to use rigs to make the animation faster since they were short on time.

I think a big thing about Monkie Kid's audience is that its mostly made up of art and animation fans, rather than fans of lego. I discovered the show back in 2021 through an animation based twitter news account, rather than from Lego themselves, or any other lego content creator talking about it (after being an obnoxious diehard ninjago fan that brushed this show off for a year, worst mistake of my life). This means more people are here for the show rather than the sets, and less being sold (also because of those insane prices). Though, LMK does have an older audience of teens and adults unlike other themes, so I guess we can suck it up and use our grown up money lmao

(He is introduced as an evil brother with the power of destruction, there's a showdown underground, later he sends minions to delay the chosen one to get his golden power, and sends a giant creature that's specialized on eating the heroes, and later conquers the world with a giant stone body and establishes a reign of shadows until his brother returns and brings an golden armor with him) 2013 was when villain Garmadon really got to shine. But still, he doesn't even get to be the main villain that year. Makuta and Lady Bone Demon are interesting when they embrace their villain roles. Garmadon is interesting when he fights his villain role or even fights on the good side.

@@Makutros bro did you even watch ninjago my guy like garmadon didn't control the great devourer and he created the rock monster and his son beat him he's a deeper character then makuta and when he did become good his past came to haunt him and he isn't even forgiven immediately and if he is he will never forgive himself and he loves his son and lives life to the fullest when he can before being pulled apart brutally by the world be it him being banished to the underworld his evil side ripping him from them or getting controlled by a demon or sacrificing himself for his family and friends and allies or getting back as basically some other guy and getting bitter and more evil or llody pushing him away or some cosmic event what I'm saying is he can't catch a break but his greatest strength is the will to go back to the ones he loves no venom no demon no cosmic event is gonna stop him he may go bad may go evil but he still comes back at the light it's never to late to do something good and when he's a villain he steals the show and when he's good he steals the show makuta is just evil lady bone demon is good damn good but garmadon will always be the king she could be the 2nd best or even a queen but a evil king is a evil king even a kind one

@@Phantom-hopper I never brought up the great devourer, I meant the Grundal, who's just functionally the Rahi Nui from Bionicle. Garmadon is a deeper character, but that barely reflects on his villainous actions. The way he challenges the ninja is in most scenarios rather simple. It's the Overlord and Harumi who come up with the more devious plans. In season 2 Garmadon even gets sidelined because fighting Garmadon would mess with Lloyd's moral compass. The moral conflict is just taken out of the equation for a simple good versus bad showdown. It's as though the Emperor would kill Darth Vader and fight Luke on his own at the beginning of the throne room scene in episode six. Garmadon works better as the anti-hero, who deals with his own flaws. Harumi for example is a good villain because she breaks Lloyd's entire belief system and crushes his faith in the power of love and hope. Garmadon in her plans is mostly just the muscle to do that. The most evil thing Garmadon was is killing Mistake, but that never gets addressed. Instead, he just returns as an anti-hero, who needs to find a way back to his son. As a villain, he is rarely in the driver's seat, but usually someone's pawn. The last time he was the true main antagonist was in the pilots, and back then he wasn't particularly deep. Garmadon works best as anti-hero, not as a villain. He doesn't really challenge the heroes' ideals nor does he do the crazy master plans. His battles with his own flaws are more interesting than his battles with the heroes.
