The Hasselblad 80mm f/1.9 is incredible. Its a major addition to the Hasselblad X1D lens lineup in that it has an incredible personality.
Available in December 2018 at B&H goo.gl/hnLeUZ
The Hasselblad X1D is still a fairly young system. Hasselblad has a roadmap of coming lenses and the 80mm f/1.9 is the 6th lens in the lineup. More importantly this lens represents an unusual lens type for medium format in its aperture. There currently is no lens like this available on any native medium format system and that's what makes this special. Hasselblad have developed a new voice and if this is any indication of the future direction, its going to be incredible.
• 80.5mm f/1.9
• 14 elements in 9 groups
• Aperture range f/1.9 to f/32
• 77mm filter threading

Great review, Ted. BTW, the reason why the lens holds up to f/16 without significant loss from diffraction is that diffraction is related to the absolute physical size of the aperture, not the f/ratio alone. It's related to the ratio of the area of the aperture opening relative to the area within one wavelength of the aperture edge; smaller physical apertures have more edge area relative to the center of the opening. Hence why large format photographers commonly used f/64 without significant diffraction (Group f/64).

This is fucking fascinating, thank you for explaining it. Would that mean a smaller lens on, say, a 35mm camera would suffer MORE from diffraction at smaller apertures?
@stuartschaffner9744
@stuartschaffner9744 5 жыл бұрын
Joe is right. The angular diffraction depends mostly on the diameter of the front lens element compared to the wavelength of light,or lambda/D. The linear blur on the sensor scales as the focal length L. So, the blur spot diameter scales as lambda*L/D or lambda*f. So basically diffraction blur has little to do with the internals of the lens. The internals cause other kinds of blur and I’ll bet this beauty keeps that to an absolute minimum. To get more accurate estimates, look up “Airy disk”. I did some rough calculations once, and a decent estimate would be a blur spot diameter of about 1.2*f micrometers for a diffraction-limited lens. So, at f/16 your blur spot would be about 20 micrometers for red light. At f/2 it would be only about 2.4 micrometers. To see how that compares with the resolution of your sensor, calculate the pixel stride or find the grain size if you are using film. Large formats mean large pixel strides for the same number of megapixels. Remember that blur affects micro contrast at least as much as it affects the edges of objects. Sadly, I doubt that I will ever get to try out this fabulous lens.

Hasselblad X1D camera doesn't have a mechanical shutter. That is one of the reasons of its very short flange focal distance 20mm which is incredible for a medium format digital camera. Instead Hasselblad XCD mount lenses have internal leaf shutter. That permits very fast flash synch speeds which is highly important but it restricts the size of aperture. The f/1.9 isn't something impressive for medium format lenses but for a medium format lens with leaf shutter it is phenomenal.

Cool lens! I'll take your word that its microcontrast (chromatic aberration and flare) is super. I'm not personally that pleased with making most of an image blurry, but I accept that others with valid artistic visions use that effectively. With this lens, even on KZbin, I could see that there was something special about the bokeh. Initially, I found it disturbing. On the image of the tiny butterfly on someone's fingers, I found my eye drawn to an almost spookily coherent blur line outlining the person's thumb. If other people have the same reaction then the normal use of blurring in composition isn't working. In fact, what the backgrounds all looked like was more what I would get out of Photoshop by using a Gaussian blur filter instead of the filter that mimics lens blur. Sad, perhaps, but could the fact that people are so used to the point spread function for cheap lenses that they find this lens disturbing? After spending more time looking at the blur I got past the "ugh" stage. However, I think that most people will spend only a few seconds before rejecting something that looks different.

@koryeasterday5164
@koryeasterday5164 6 жыл бұрын
There's a lot of debate on exactly what this means. There's no specific way to measure it, so it's kind of something you can perceive but not quantify - if that make sense. Think of it this way: Let's say you're looking at a black and white photograph of a car. The side panel of the car goes from light gray to dark gray. A lens with good micro contrast will allow you to capture a high range of grays in the transition from light to dark. A lens with bad micro contrast will capture fewer shades of gray. The sharpness of the two lenses could be exactly the same but the one with better micro contrast will have color and shading transitions that look more life-like.

@@ro-deo119 I would suggest looking at Hasselblad's own You Tube page. They have a few interviews with chief lens designers, including one that discusses this lens and makes a particular example of the also extraordinary 30mm XCD lens (a 24mm full-frame equivalent). They don't discuss who manufactures these XCD series lenses for their two mirrorless bodies, but they very much appear to have their own lens design team that designed the XCD lens series. Zeiss manufactured Hasselblad's lenses for the V series cameras, the 503CW, etc., think of the Apollo mission moon cameras, and it is generally thought that Fuji manufactured the lenses for the Hasselblad H series, their 50, 60, 80, and 100 mega-pixel DSLR camera series.

Not as shallow as 85mm f/1.4, or 50mm f/1.2 on full frame though. I personally wouldn’t mind a huge lens if it means a more unique look.

nice review Ted, but one reason most likely NOT to go straight to the 90/105 focal length is that these when converted to 6x6, for ease of maths gives 150/180 or 250 ( 135 equivalent in 35 format); and these are long and heavy, with a lot of glass, so having the wide apature in a std focal length lens (55 equivalent for 645 in 35 format) is problematic to design, and for most designs is hard to focus with anything but the full auto-focus feature set ( with contrast and phase detect systems, and magnification of Live view in the viewfinder); eg the new Leica 75mm f1.25 Noct or the 50 mm f0.95 lenses.

Hey, nice review and nice photos, but I'm really not sure I'm convinced by the medium format look thing. I you were to use an equivalent focal length and equivalent aperture at the same distance from your subject and background, wouldn't the shot look pretty much the same? Not saying it's not a nice lens, and not saying that medium format doesn't have advantages. Just saying, can't most of the look that doesn't pertain to the lens' specifics be replicated with a smaller sensor provided an equivalent exists? And with current offerings, in terms of shallow depth of field, isn't the full-frame format unbeatable? To me, the advantage of medium format would be that since the sensor is bigger and the pixel density generally smaller (bigger pixels), you don't need as fast lenses to get as shallow a depth of field, which makes it easier to make good lenses wide open for medium format than it is for smaller formats, at the small disadvantage that the glass is bigger. Also, the bigger sensor has better signal to noise ratio, which can translate to better sensor performance (more pixels, cleaner signal, better colors) if the same technology is used. Anyway. The full frame equivalent of this lens would be a 63mm f/1.5 lens. I don't think such a lens exists, the closest would be something like a Zeiss Otus 55mm, which is wider with a slightly bigger aperture. I think that's why the 80mm f/1.9 is a unique lens in that regard. Would be interesting to see more fast medium format lenses, especially wider angle ones. Would be sweet if Hasselblad came up with a 45mm f/1.4 or something. It would also offer a field of view/depth of field combination unseen on any other system (equivalent would be a 35mm f/1.1 or so).

Ive shot Hasselblad Digital cameras since the Imacon back days (H and H1). With the advent of the X1D and the same Sensors in the HD range, I don't believe you will get better skin tones or color gradients. Go ahead- stick with your cheap garbage and believe on!

Hi Ted, really a gorgeous lens... I'd like to take the opportunity and ask a bit of a "noob" question, since this is a major theme when it comes to this lens: what is "microcontrast" and why it's different from "sharpness"? Reading Zeiss's white paper on how to read MTF charts doesn't quite clarify this issue for me. Is it related to the so called lens "plasticity" - roughly, the "3D" look you describe, which makes images sort of "pop" out of the picture, particularly regarding textures - which made German lenses such as Zeiss, Leica and Schneider famous back in the film days?

Nice intro to the Hasselblad lens, sir! As a landscape and product STILLS X-T3 shooter (no video), I have been debating on selling my Fuji kit (reluctantly), and moving into FF, specifically the Nikon Z7 (or the Sony a7Rlll). Since I shoot 99% tripod-mounted, neither IBIS nor video interests me. So, my question is, for large print output (around 24"x 36" prints), from which system (Sony or Nikon Z) would I see more of an improvement in terms of image sharpness, detail rendition, dynamic range, base ISO performance, etc., would I see over the already excellent X-T3? (And BTW, medium format is a bit out of my price range.) Also, why did you not mention that Fujifilm also makes some of the Hasselblad lenses? Thanks!

Absolutely stunning images. We have DSLRs our, and the battle for mirrorless mainly between Canon and Nikon for the spots behind Sony and Fuji. Medium formats are different and if any company that is going to target Hasselblad is not going to take top spot. Hasselblad with this lens and new camera systems is taking steps to make sure they are at the top of the game. I personally won’t be able to afford a camera like that but it is nice to know that they are out there with incredible breathtaking images and appreciate the quality of colour etc. I have a 50mm 1.8 lens for my camera and it is my favourite lens. I can be one on one with the subject and I’m so impressed how the subject can can be separated from the background or immediate foreground based on the aperture and where I’m focused. You discuss photography as an art and it is. Great channel and always enjoying the topics. you choose to discuss.

I do a LOT of full length portraits and what you call environmental portraits and I still disagree with your comment about the odd choice of a 60mm focal length. For full length portrait a FOV between 75mm and 80mm is MUCH more suitable. This is not new . back in the film days I do not believe that there was a SINGLE 60mm FOV film lens designed for portrait . the 60mm FOV in 35mm were macro lenses. This still remains the case in the digital age

I was somewhat disappointed when I bought a Sigma 50mm lens around the time they were becoming all the rage. Yes, it's a great lens, but something seemed to be missing for me. The magic just wasn't quite there. Of course, this photographer should share some of the blame too, and I'm working on it, but I've also stopped listening to pseudo-scientific comparisons of lens metrics.

I also want to add about the comment you made at 6.00 in the video about all lenses being best in the middle of the aperture range . this is usually true BUT ONLY for large sensors ( say 35mm and above). For smaller sensors (APS and smaller) this is NOT the case. I think this should be made clear for viewers who are not versed in the pros and cons of sensor sizes. For instance the best micro 4/3 lenses usually are at their best at ONE stop only from the max aperture

I understand calling a medium format 120 camera a "medium format" yet for the digital cameras calling them medium format is this not a misnomer? What should be the proper name for digital cameras with a say 43.8 x 32.9mm sensor?

I would love to see a 24MP, 16bit medium format, and yes I know many will have kill for even saying that but here is the reasons. Less MP, the better the focus will be, Medium format at at 24 or even 32, will means very much light per pixel, and would kill in night photography, it will be cheaper, and will produce smaller size files. If you are a PRO this doesn't matter to you but for regular people to a photo sistem needs to beat unlimited free storage and backup from your device, automatically touch up by powerful AI on google cloud. I went on 3 week vacation, with nothing else then my phone and did over 900 photos, and all I had to do was to move them all in a folder on my cloud and share them. Would an APS-C do better? Sure, it would, does the difference in justify the 2500 Euro price, inconvenience of having a device plus glasses, cards, long term storage, home photo processing? No. Full frame... we are getting there. Medium format absolutely. If you remember Sonny did this with the 12 MP A7 Mk.3 but 12 mp were not enough but 24 or 32 would be so much better.

thanks for the video i always like to hear from the hasselblad series maybe we see the top tier of hasselblad ? the H6D-400c you right the thing with big aperatures higher then F13 , the medium format does not drop that fast as a m43 or aps-c would do ff has a bit less of this problem to m43ßs or aps-c but still a few more then medium format (what actually most likely is only 23 % more on the x direction) there only a few exceptions that reach the 4.5 * 6.0 (smallest true medium format) (classical digital medium format 32.9 x 43.8 ) (ff 24 x 36 ) that makes only 23 % more for the x direction the y direction being in 4:"3" format the bokeh is very big is there might be a compromise instead of having a lower focal lengh

What would be the best lens for a sharp resolution thru out the entire depth of field, say you're shooting a picture of a car at about a distance of 25 feet, on a mountain road, but you also would a sharp focus on the valley behind and below the car?

I feel like once the "sharpness race" is over, there will be a "micro contrast race". Everyone likes the so-called "3d pop" look, usually held by Zeiss.
