I have a Nikon d800 and sigma apo dg 70-300 with macro at 200-300mm. I wanna take pictures of my stickers for my website. I like the lens because it really has fast focus and it takes tack sharp photos. I love it. But it’s hard to take photos of my stickers on my desk. I was looking at the Nikon 40mm f/2.8G AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR Lens - Black. Would that be a good choice or should I stick with the sigma?

I need to shoot jewelry but bigger stuff like necklaces and long necklaces. I want to do David Yurman style photos (not the primary picture, but the second one where necklaces are usually lying in a diagonal). However, I've noticed that DY photo's depth of field is very wide. You can actually see the whole necklace, from pendant to clasp, really, really sharp even though the clasp is way back. I've tried doing this with a 50mm but I cannot get this depth of field, even at f16. Which kind of lens should I use? Or is it because the camera is too close? Do I need a 30mm? Or are they using focus stacking? I'm so lost!!!!! Never mind how can they achieve that amazing background!
@PriscilaEliasPhotography2 жыл бұрын
Hi Adrian. It's definitely a macro lens. Jewelry without a macro is not nearly as sharp as it is with a macro one. Is you shoot Canon, the 100mm f/2.8 should work fine for you.

@@PriscilaEliasPhotography Hi Priscila! Thanks for your reply. I was thinking about a macro lens. However, can a macro lens give me that wide depth of field?

Priscila, thank you so much, this was so, very, very helpful! It is funny, when I was a kid, like 13-15 years old, I was very much into photography I even developed my own film (that should tell you how long ago that was, lol!). I am much older now and have a decent set up for my small space but the 3 lenses I have, 2 of which are macros, all fall within the ranges you mention, but do not start there. I want to make an investment and now I know which direction to go! Anyway, this was so wonderful. Yes, I would love to see a course on product photography. Thanks!

Thanks Priscilla for this fantastic video! I'm just dipping my toes into the Product Photography waters. I have a Canon M50 Mark II so my question to you would be, is the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 a good bet (considering the crop factor - including the adapter)? Or would I be better off with the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro? Thanks for your advice, and keep those video coming!
@IXavenue2 жыл бұрын
I personally use the 50mm STM 1.8 with the Viltrox Speedbooster making it F/1.2 on my M50 and I'm very happy with the setup, it also reduces the crop making it almost a full frame.

@@IXavenue Hi! Do you use It for product photography? I'm about to buy the 50mm 1.8 with the speedbooster, but I wonder if this a good lens for product photography.
@IXavenue2 жыл бұрын
@@hugotorresx Hi Hugo, Yes i have used it for product photography aswell as portrait. Since this is a prime lens it'll require you to get used to it since you can't zoom but it's definitely worth it! Combined with the Speedbooster you'll be able to get F1.2 which makes such an amazing Bokeh. But if you can get a hold on the Canon 100mm Lens that will be my best recommendation for Product photography but this one will require a bigger investment.

@PanRider9398 ай бұрын
All good common sense but definitely lean toward Tamron, equally as good as a stock lens at near 2/3 the price. Totally agree about Zooms,, the Canon the 24-105 is probably the worst lens I ever owned, gave it away.

I am planning to buy sony a6400 camera (crop sensor) with 90mm fe 2.8 macro lens. Is this a good choice for jewellery photography.
@PriscilaEliasPhotography3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Vaisakh. I have never tried to use my macro lens with a crop sensor but, in terms of quality, I know both the a6400 and the 90mm f/2.8 are great. If I were you, I'd try to search for some videos/articles where people who have used that combination talk about it. As you're shooting jewellery and that's very small, a macro lens should be your best option even for a crop sensor, though. :)
@vaisakhviswam81123 жыл бұрын
@@PriscilaEliasPhotography Thanks for the feedback 🤠. Also, for the same a6400, apart from close shots, should I go for a 50mm to get the entire jewellery in the frame or a 35mm. I have this confusion since in most of the articles/ videos that I have seen the 50mm lens is excellent for product photography but nowhere it was mentioned with which camera the 50mm lens is great with a full frame or crop sensor. In my case, as you know it's a crop sensor, so which should I go for a 50mm or 35mm.

Why recommend the wide open lenses when using flash with product photos you’ll be shooting around f16 for sharpness? I have the 24-70 and the 70-200 both f4 from cannon. The 135 prime from cannon is considered to be the sharpest lens of all time. I was just looking at the 90 Macro prime from Tammron is listed at +$300 for cannon and under $200 for a Sony. I don’t have a macro lens currently and was setting up to shoot some product test shoots when I discovered that my lenses won’t work for details such as labels and things on products smaller than a coffe mug, so I’m glad you made this video because I wasn’t sure what actually to do next. Although it’s worth pointing the place to start should probably be the 90 or 100 or 135 macro lens. There is also a 180 prime from cannon for about $300 and which I’ve heard takes really nice portraits and product shots as well: I just don’t see the need to tell folks to buy a more expensive wide open lens when they’ll never shoot products with a flash that wide open because the key to producing great product shoot is everything needs to be in focus, ie capture the details.

@PriscilaEliasPhotography2 жыл бұрын
If you have a 50mm, I'd say it's usually better for product photography than the 17-40mm. You should have less distortion with it. Not to mention the aperture, as usually fixed lenses have wider apertures. :) Hope it helps.

Hi, what’s is the best body for product photography?
@PriscilaEliasPhotography3 жыл бұрын
There's no such thing as a body that is "specifically good for product photography", you know, Jonathan? :) A good camera will be good for any jobs, what will be best for one thing or another are the lenses you use. If you're starting out and you're tight on budget, I suggest the SL3 from Canon but, if you can invest some more and want to go all the way in quality, then check out the R6 from Canon. I have the 5D Mark IV and it suits me perfectly for photos, but if I'd switch my camera today, I'd got either with the Canon R5 or R6 if I only did photos. The R5 is a best for video also. Hope it helps.
