Thank you so much for this breakdown! I've been stressing hard on synth arrangement for an original piece, and I feel like I've gotten closer to figuring it out after watching this. I need to take a step back, take a breath, and really take some time to check out what each of these synths have to offer. In particular I was looking for a DX-7 sound like Toro y Moi uses, but never knew Logic had a stock synth that models that same sound. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

erm... Logic´s (very old) vsti synths like ES2, ES2 etc. sounds a bit 90s plastic oldschool. I´m not really a fan of this stuff. There are so much better thirdparty synths in these days.

I hear you and agree somewhat, but as someone who is migrating from using Windows and Ableton and having pirated dozens upon dozens of third party plugins and synths-I especially liked to chase plugins that are aesthetically appealing or looks simple or pretty-when I got my Mac and chose to switch the logic pro and not pirate anymore, I opened the es2 synth or whatever one has that spinning disc in the middle with many of the presets, and I literally screamed because it was such a jump scare. The rest of Logic Pro's interface is so opposite of these UFO looking evil things. But at least for me, and there are a lot of people like me, I think I really need to go back to the basics and learn these because these actually sound really good to me. There's something really refreshing about how unedited they sound.

is there a difference between analog synths and digital synths? apparently they use square saw traingle wave forms etc. but is there a difference in quality?
@MTTC2 жыл бұрын
This is a great question. There is a big difference between analog and digital synths. With analog the tones or sounds are generated using old school electronic components such as capacitors, diodes, resistors and integrated circuits ICs (my dad was an electrician in the 70s and 80s so I had be also 😂). These components work together to create sound when a voltage is passed through the circuit. With digital synths although the built in oscillators produce different waveforms as you have said the tones are processed digital ie as 1s and 0s. This is then passed through a DSP chip or circuit which allows manipulation of the sound. Finally the signal goes through digital to analog conversion so it can be heard by us humans. I own both analog and digital synths and love each and every device I’ve bought. However a well designed and spec’d digital synth will win out every time for me as you get fantastic analog emulation along with the awesome power , flexibility and manipulation features of advanced digital technology. I know it’s a long answer but I’m big on synth technology as I grew up playing analog units before digital were even on the market. I still own the grand daddy Yamaha DX7 which I bought in 1985. Hope this helps 😀
