Winter is coming and fishing is getting tough. When it’s difficult to catch bass I put away the experimental lures and fish tried and true fish catchers. Pre rigged soft plastic swimbaits like the Agent E and the Dark Sleeper never let me down! If you have a finicky bite or cold conditions you need to try this bait if you haven’t before!

yup this is true. I use these in the cooler months. The dark sleeper and/or a lipless. Both get the job done

I appreciate it! I try to fish out of the kayak and mini boat as much as possible to find new spots, but when I have limited time to fish nothing is easier than the bank.

I feel like the only way to fish these is to yo yo them, they way they swim is way better to jog them than to straight retrieve. Definitely try the Gobius.

I’m going to have to try these. I have a few of them in my box, the bite disappeared about two weeks ago from the cold. No luck on Jerkbaits or drop shots. Maybe the Dark Sleeper will work.

I feel like the only way to fish these is to yo yo them, they way they swim is way better to jig them with some small quick snaps, than to straight retrieve. Definitely try the Gobius. Also ever try putting “extra” super glue on the eyes when they are brand new?

In the past a slow straight retrieve with occasional pauses to let it fall to the bottom has been the most effective for me. Goes to show it’s always a benefit to try different retrieves and adapt. I will definitely be getting some Gobius, but might have to wait till spring to use them! And I have never tried supergluing before using them. Great idea!

Thanks for this tip. Fall season is getting tough for me and I got skunked last week. Will definitely try this? Do you slow reel this lure or just leave it in one spot?

The two retrieves I have done best with in real cold water is a real slow retrieve keeping bottom contact as much as possible. And this year, yo yoing it off the bottom and letting it fall on slack line has by far gotten me the most bites. Hope that helps. Good luck!

Have you tried z-man's version of a goby? Maybe more durable while still being very soft....

That is a great recommendation! That is one of the few remolded ones I haven’t tried and you’re right I am sure the durability on those are much better.

By no means is it ideal lol. There are plenty of sites that will tell you what is “best,” but I use a 6’10” medium heavy moderate fast Lews rod. I like the moderate fast because I can throw the bait a little further and there is a bit more give when there is a mush bite so I don’t immediately pull it out of the fish’s mouth. The reel is a lews speed spool super duty wide which I like for the capacity of line and casting distance. And line is just 17lb fluoro. But if I am fishing the 2.4 inch dark sleeper the whole set up is downsized.

100% agree and definitely a trade off with these lures, but if I had to choose destroying a $6 lure or catching no fish. I am picking fish every time 😂

My best pike bite last year in fall was on a jerk bait. I usually alternate baits for pike pretty often if not getting bit. Lipless crankbaits and soft plastic swimbaits would be my other favorites. Live bait is always a good option too.
