Marshall Factory Tour 2023: • Marshall Amps Factory ...
My original Marshall Factory Tour: • Marshall Factory Tour ... part one!
My original Marshall Factory Tour: • Marshall Factory Tour ... part two!
From the first time I used this amp back in 2014 I knew immediately that it was something special and offered guitarists something that is pretty much unique - the ability to use one amp for all styles that they play. Versatility was king.
This JVM410HJS Joe Satriani amp made the alternate JVM410H sound like a poor sister - and I think that's still the case today. The 410H (as I'll call it) suffered in many ways to the Marshall amps that I was used to over the years. The internal build was different than this 'Satch' amp, there was no choke, the drive channels of that 410H amp squealed after about 9:00 on the drive knob and lots more. But sadly (in some ways) this JVM410HJS Satch amp that is reviewed here could easily be confused with that 'other' amp. Until you plug it in!
Fear not. Recently I have noticed for about the last three years or so many KZbin 'reviewers' 'discovering' the JVM410HJS Satch version amplifier. Where were these guys when the original was released? in kinder garden no doubt... but at least they are catching on to this Satriani monster amp these days. And no wonder.
Many guys will never have played a JVM410HJS or even seen one, let alone with all those features that this amp has against the regular 410H? Well I think that if you have never played this Satriani amp head then you would be in for a massive rude awakening. The JVM410HJS is most likely Marshall's secret weapon and absolutely the most versatile amp Marshall Amplification have ever made to date.
You will see in this video that I show a general overview, the chassis, the Power Transformer and Output Transformer, the main board and compare this to the 410H board, the choke, and more.
I also offer my opinion as an owner of over 20 tube amps and a number of Marshall amps. Don't be surprised to see that this Marshall amp is NOT built like some of the rubbish out there that is often called 'boutique' amplifiers, when in reality some of those amps are rather like the emperors new clothes. But this JVM410HJS really IS different.
Play any style you want with this amp - its got the lot. Prices are climbing too. So what better time to review this amp - a unique Marshall limited edition signature amplifier at it's 10th anniversary of its release back in 2014.
Now all we want is for this to come out as a 20w Studio version - come on Marshall, you'll sell tens of thousands!
I have spent considerable time creating this video entirely at my own expense:
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE, RING THE BELL, AND THUMBS UP to give my channel a boost and thank you for watching - I hope the video is enjoyable for you and that you see the tings in it that other reviews NEVER show!.

Marshall have started fitting vietnamese transformers recently instead of the dagnall transformers . With a huge quality drop and a 1khz hum
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 7 ай бұрын
I saw that from the Ozzy. Well Marshall is subscribed to my channel and maybe they will comment? Who knows, but I wish they would. Personally, I remain a little unconvinced that Marshall would release a product with that hum (as they showed) as historically that certainly would not be. Let's keep our eyes on that aspect and see what transpires - I doubt it will remain as a problem. Good point (not applicable of course to this amp) and thanks for watching.

Tube amp with the tube sockets attached to a pc board!? This is a big no, no. The best Marshall ever build is an old school JTM 45 with two KT66 power tubes from late sixties. Simple but perfect amp. period.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 7 ай бұрын
I can't disagree that the JTM45 is a brilliant amp of course. But remember this design does NOT have the tubes facing down (a really bad thing - remember the Peavey Mace? 160w of pure hell then later sawdust) and I do think the tube bases are not problematic at least from all the amps I have seen. Of course some are though... thanks for watching.

Well in my experience they are very different. I owned 2 or 3 410H and this is my second 410HJS. So different... and I think that Joe Satriani really did put lots of input to this amp and Marshall delivered... they are pretty rare really - made about 2014 so 10th Anniversary coming up. I'll be keeping this one... whether tube amps come or go, there really is little around that covers near enough every angle of tone like the 410HJS does. Thanks for the post... and if you have one hang on to it! Thanks for watching...

Well you should try and at least have a go. Most guys think they are pretty much the same, but there are some major differences IMO and the HJS really is exceptionally versatile too. Many guys love the 410H and my video is not aimed at knocking those. For me the 410H I never really got what I wanted and when the HJS came along it was immediately obvious that those were quite different. The thing is, of course, its what works for the player - something some forget, and the right amp can be a wonderfully inspiring thing for sure. Thanks for the post... and have a great Christmas...

I think Joe did too. Comparing the 410H and the 410HJS they are just so different. I'm currently messing about with Guitar Synthesizers and pickups etc. which is interesting because they have moved on somewhat. Historically in 2006 I used a guitar synth for a Saxophone on a track and it was brilliant I have to say, but having said that the other stuff on that guitar synth were not that good. Later I used that same synth for a few tracks sort of strings and that sort of thing, but looking at this stuff now I can see the potential for sure. Those reviews should be interesting to some, maybe not all, but if viewers have an 'open mind' to the synths then they can absolutely be worth a look. I'm not perfect, I get things wrong (but at least I try hard) but try and show the gear just like a regular guy that I am... most buyers are not perfect and the reviews I guess would be a general reflection of what most users might experience, with a bit of other things that no-one ever shows. In any case thanks... and thanks for watching too.

A Marshall that sounds good played clean, that has to be a rare beast. To my ears the clean tones still had a slight edge to them, but audio on KZbin never sounds as good as hearing an amp live. I owned a JTM 60 and wondered why i was unable to get the clean tone that i craved for, once i tried a well used but still working Vox AC30 i wanted one, so the Marshall went. I still have the AC30 that i rebulit and cured all the know weakspots on and will never sell it. Great amps and guitars take years to find, but once you find the perfect combination you just want to keep on playing them. Hope you are keeping well Tony, and have a Great Chistmas and New Year.

Honestly, its THE cleanest Marshall amp I have ever heard - and it could have been a bit cleaner - but you know me... ha always on 10 :). Well the AC30's are great amps - seemingly many models and I don't know them well though. So the JVM410HJS Satch head I honestly think JS REALLY wanted a true clean - he plays so many styles of music. I sold one of these (silly me) but grabbed another some years later (probably 2018/19 or something) and intend to keep it. Really hard to find in good condition. Yes I'm settled back now and making videos (they take so long) next will be Guitar Synthesizer which has moved on in leaps and bounds. Yes you too have a great Christmas etc. too...

I've been drawn to this amp, but having really bad reliability issues with my 6100LH I've ditched the idea of building my tones around multichannel/featured amps. So now i happily rock a 1987X and good pedals to give me the gains. My latest adventure is using an NU-X Amp Academy to run the output stage of the 1987X and it is VERY good, total volume control and a good Di. option!!! I was raised on a Super Bass mk. 2 so I favor the big punchy cleans before any gain.

Thanks for the kind words. Ha I have been on here since 2009 and made 425 videos covering 10 million views. Man its been a long hard road. Age is in your mind I guess and as I work (still - but because I want to) in technology in real life, I love tinkering with this stuff. Even the 'simulators' that I often harp on about and their effects... are in their own way interesting and hard to ignore these days. It's physically harder as you get older but when I get a piece of gear that really is new and inspiring I tend to play better :) It's all relative of course, but I try and offer a real world view of the gear and experiences I have had with music gear. I survived prostate cancer from 10 years ago and have had other health stuff going on, but here I am, still making this stuff... Ha my hair is now pink :) with a bit of grey too :). My 2 JVM'S sound awesome! The trick is from the OD green on back. You use a BOSS SD-1 as a clean boost. For the od orange and red NO boost! Also understanding. That the channel volume and master volumes. Push the power amp and preamp tubes. This means you can get power tube saturation at a very low volume. If you crank the channel volume very loud you cannot crank the master.

Watch for another one you would not be disappointed, even in these days of 'simulators' (that are often hyped as something better than the reality of things). The way I think of Marshall, is this, (and some will disagree) that without Marshall and their 're-evaluation' of Fender amps at the time, there might even not have been so many other brands of since then and even today. I could name them, one brand after the other, all 'claiming' the Marshall crown under some other hyped name, when in reality, those circuits are just reworked Marshall amps. Your post made me think about the state of play if Marshall had never existed... I wonder how it would have all turned out? A very good post and thanks for watching.

I have reviews on my website of the 410H here: tonymckenzie.com/marshall_jvm410h_review.htm that you might find interesting... and of the HJS here: tonymckenzie.com/marshall-jvm410hjs-satriani-review.htm and both reviews unbiased etc. My view might have changed a little since those days, but probably not by much and its an interesting subject comparing the two. Hey Tony. I got my 410JHS in 2017 I think. And I can say the same as you do. This amp is something different and not really comparable to the regular 410H. Oh it does not take long to get those sort of comments... Just tell things the way they are... and hey presto... This amp really is the most flexible and great sounding amp I said (and many agree - especially owners of them) but of course you will also get comments from fans of other companies where the amps are basically Marshall amps and the companies 'try to make the Marshall designs better'; a sort of futile thing really. :) Yes I met Mr Marshall too years ago, and the team down in Milton Keynes are all very nice people too. I really like my 410H but never had a chance to buy or try the Satriani model. I would never sell mine, but I would buy the Satriani model if it was ever released again. I am wondering if Marshall will ever make another all-in-one premium tube amp again. I would buy one even though I never carry around a heavy amp anymore in my older age or play big events. I have had a Marshall SV20 and 212 cabinet on backorder since November here in the States. I have other smaller amps and am new to the FX/ amp modeling scene. I have a HeadRush MX5 as my first unit last year but will probably upgrade soon. Especially after watching some of your reviews. Keep up the good reviews. PS. It did take me a long and sometimes frustrating time to master the 410H. Over a year and many hours but it can be mastered enough to really enjoy it IMO.

You know what, I really like Marshall Amps and the company has always been helpful. Currently from my position here in the UK I honestly don't know what Marshall will release (if anything!) as we move forward. I sincerely hope they do. I could imagine the 410 HJS in the 20w Studio format and I'm sure it would sell so many. I visited Marshall a year ago and spoke with Terry Marshall at the time and he assured me that Marshall would still carry on with the amps... but other than the Studio JTM I have seen really nothing. For me its very sad to see. I had two 410H amps and never really got it where I wanted it, but the HJS was honestly instant. Glad my reviews help at least a little and I always think that someone that makes informed decisions is far less likely to make a mistake. We have all bought something that was not what we thought... me included. :) Thanks for watching - appreciated.

@@tonymckenziecom I agree, a 410 HJS in a 20w Studio format would be a great idea and I would definitely purchase one. All of the big retailers Sweetwater, Sam Ash, Guitar Center) here in the USA just started a large sale on all Marshall equipment with drastic price cuts. The strange this is that none of these retailers have most of the Marshall items in stock and everything is on backorder. Unless Marshall is planning to import mass quantities of equipment to the USA, this large Marshall sale is worthless. I have had a Marshall SV20 head, SV212 cabinet and ST212 cabinet on backorder from Sam Ash since November 2023 when the last Marshall sale was happening. It will be interesting to see how this all works out and if Marshall is still supplying USA retailers with the equipment. I will be ordering/backordering another Marshall amp but haven't decided which one yet. Another 100-watt tube or another Studio. Hmmmmm, wonder what Tony would pick?

I have one of these, but just not in hand now. It belongs to my great guitar playing friend that will give all his gear to me if he dies, so I hope I don’t ever get it. We started ping guitar together in 1986 so we may both go at the same time. Luckily if I do get it, it won’t be all worn out as he isn’t even playing it. He bought a Quad Cortex and just uses that now. I think he fires up the JVM 410 H JS Marshall every once in awhile. I’m a fan of a lot of Marshalls though. I have a JMD:1 50 watt, 3310, 3210, 3203, Lead 12 mini stack, Zakk Wylde Mini Stack, 1987x, and some great tube preamps - JMP, Jubilee, JCM800, JTM45, 1959 SLP, JCM900 SL-X, Two Notes Revolt Tube (Plexi channel), AMT SS-20 (Plexi to JCM800 modded to JVM) that I use with an Axiom Effects PAE-1 pedal (PAE-1 stands for Power Amp Emulator - greatest analog emulator for the tube power amp sounds and full controls), and some jfet preamps - Origin Effects Revival Drive Hot Rod Edition, Sinvertek MGAT-1 hyper preamp (JTM45, 1959 SLP, 1987X, JCM800, and JVM sounds), Master Effects Martyr (OD1 and OD2 of a Marshall 8100), Bogner LaGrange (Plexi), Bogner Blue (I use in Plexi mode), Joyo British , Cmatmods Brownie, and a great Digital version of 68 Super Bass, 68 Super Lead, and a Brown model (variac’d at 90v 68 SL) in my new UAFX Lion 68 I run into power amps and real cabs. Plus two Mahaffay HiLo Watt Plexi heads (1/4 watt JMP tube amp with three gain stages going from normal gain to Bright, to Variac’d Brown Sound, then dummy load, insert style fx loop, then class A solid state 33 watt reamp built in), and a D.Kowalski Dark Gene (green version - 1/2 watt Baby Plexi up to JCM800 type sounds). You could maybe say I like the Marshall sounds. Just a little. Enjoyed the video and deep dive!

@@TheBoss0Time I didn’t say they are not “reliable”. If reliability is the issue, then certainly all solid state is the most reliable. You know what Tony you’re a fucking bad ass. I used to own the original JVM as well, and I could not get along with it. I bought a noise gate the best on the market, and it just wasn’t gonna work because unlike the HJS, which has independent noise gates for each channel one noise gate on a JVM just didn’t work, because if you play with any dynamics and change channels, one setting on the noise gate is not gonna work for the other channels. I have to take exception with your comment about the weight of the amp. It’s fucking heavy and if you do gig like I do, it’s not something you want to carry all the time especially when you take it out of your basement studio. I’m hoping somehow with the resurgence and new ownership that maybe they’ll make, an HJS mini but probably not gonna happen, but integrated noise gates on an amp are the best noise gates, especially when you have one for each channel. Joe Satriani was onto something here when he did this ,you don’t need Reverb on each channel that’s a waste of space. Anyway, great fucking video man keep them coming. One last thing. I would’ve liked if you would’ve explained what the choke actually does for the people that are not familiar. It filters, unwanted and noise from the AC current. One last thing, I changed my power tubes from EL34’s to 5881’s. What a sound. I biased it accordingly. Mods In the spirit of EVH!!Santiago Alvarez from Marshall did a great job designing this amp to Joe’s specs. Peace from Indiana

No doubt you get it... if they had designed this amp to look differently then the HJS I believe would literally be legendary, but many don't see its actually a different amp, which is a pity. Oh Santiago is a very nice guy and back around the AFD and YJM100 I spoke with him for bits of info - very helpful he was. He left Marshall but I believe he's back there now... maybe. What are your thoughts on the Made in Vietnam DSL amps?
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 7 ай бұрын
Great question. I did own a DSL100 (in green covering - special edition) made in the UK at the time. That was a pretty good amp and at a pretty low cost. I have seen the DSL Vietnamese versions and they look OK to me... but I have not used one extensively. First time I went around Marshall Factory about 10 years ago with Phil Wells they were prototyping components on a printer to send to Vietnam so that Vietnam could copy what Marshall sent over. Very interesting how they did that at that time I thought. But really Vietnam reduced the cost of the amp with labour price I guess. There's lots of the Vietnamese ones out there and if they were really bad (think TSL100 board) then I think most guys would have heard about it. So they are probably good for the cost. I always think though personally its best to base my comments on my own experience as you know, the internet can sometimes not always reflect the real position. But very good post and thanks for watching.

I gotta say that the YJM100H, for me, is THE most versatile amp Marshall made. I regularly mix & match octal-based power valves and smile every time I power up with the autobias. Imagine tone-shaping with any combination of 6L6, EL34, 6550, 5881, 6CA7, KT66, KT88 and so on...

I remember your first review of the original 410H. You hated that one , so I don't understand why you bought another of those later on 😁...Never tried out the Satriani version. I had an original 410H as well and like you at the time I preferred the TSL 100 over it. I had my amp tech take care of the incredible hiss but eventually sold it 12 years later on. Sure, the TSL 100 had some things I didn't like and it was very prone to overheating and the bias kept drifting but I always liked the basic tones more than those of the 410H. At one time I had 3 TSL's just because they weren't that reliable. A few years I sold all my Marshalls except one (modded 1959 SLP). I've had a 2203, 2204, an original '78 Jubilee, a 900SL-X, an 800 KK, 3 of those TSL 100's, a 410H and an old '75 1959 SLP but the Marshall I used for the longest time was my first TSL 100 from 1998 (it also was my best sounding of the 3 eventhough they all had the same tubes). Currently I only own 3 heads now : ENGL Blackmore, Friedman BE 100 Deluxe (which you probably hate 😆), my modded Marshall 1959 SLP and a Neural DSP Quad Cortex. But what I wanted to say was that people kept telling me to buy that HJS when I was in the market for a new amp but I never saw one at the time . Then a second hand Friedman came up in my area and I went for that one.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 7 ай бұрын
Ha you're right. I sold it, had the Satch amp later, and then thought of trying to improve the 410h from seeing inside the Satch amp. Ha I failed :) The 410HJS is literally worlds apart from the 410H. Just trust me on that. The TSL100 is als an awesome amp - many hate it because of the bed design board prior to issue 20 (most of the ones out there are needing a replacement board from what I see). But I made my 'Eniac' album on the TSL100 and the recorded tones were excellent for track 'Metropolis' and 'Lightpipe AI' and some of the others like 'Taste the Rainbow'. The TSL ruled the earth :). Man you've been around the Marshalls like me. Well honestly I take 'Friedman' as I find them. I tried one, but failed because it was not what it should have been by far, and if something like that happens to me personally I am a bit careful - especially at that money here in the UK. I owned an Engl E670 which was/is a brilliant amp and I sold it but should have kept that one. I have a 1959HW which I like also and the 1959 style amps absolutely have that original sound... re toppy but so obviously Marshall. I never bought the Quad Cortex, and although I have looked at so many simulators while they are interesting I prefer the amps as they 'feel' different really to me. Ha find a HJS - even just play one spend a bit of time with it and I'm sure you would like it. You obviously like the Marshall style of stuff. And hey, I STILL have my TSL100 :) but with rev 20 board and its perfect. Thanks Stefan for the info - always nice to hear what guys use and that sort of stuff... and have a great Christmas and break.

I've owned both jvm's (the plain JVM sounds digital (clean is more musical) and nothing like the real jcm in the mid range, and nothing like a plexi.
