I tried the JVM in a music shop amp room using a 1960A cab and to be honest, was a little underwhelmed. It sounded good but just seemed to lack that upper mid snarl I was expecting. Told the salesman what I thought and he asked me to try something else - he rolled in a 1960AV with V30's. It made the amp come alive and sounded exactly like what I was hoping for. The salesman agreed that the V30's were a perfect match for the JVM and much, much better than the standard G12T-75's. Bought the amp on the spot - best amp I've ever owned!

Even though I just got my new Engl Powerball II after 14 years of waiting, I somehow get the feeling the JVM is still going to be my main amp. It doesn’t seem to matter where on my matching Marshall cab I place the mic, with the JVM, it always sounds good. With the Engl, it can more easily get a little boomy, I’ve found out. (If I turn on the bottom switch on the Powerball II, the floor of my sound booth starts shaking.) So I’ll probably mostly play the Powerball II over the Torpedo Captor X, allowing me to always have the same mic position with whatever IR I choose.

I play through a DSL40 combo. This JVM series is that, but just really upgraded in all of the areas that needed it. It took all 4 channels, gave them their own EQ and then gave them 3 different flavors on top of that. The DSL's main weakness was the shared EQ across all 4 channels. It's fine if you play only one channel, but if you're like me and play all 4, then you never really feel like you're getting the best sound out of that channel as you make your way through them on the footswitch. You're right, the DSL line is a bit loose whereas this line has that snarl and oomph that the DSL line lacks. EQ's, Drives and Compressors help, so the DSL does have it to a degree, but just not like this.
@togfuma7 ай бұрын
I know it does add complexity but the dsl40cr does have midi. I admit there is a bit of a learning curve but once you figure it out you can do some amazing stuff. I did a setup for a friend with dsl so all 4 modes across the two channels are foot switchable and when you changed modes one of for EQ pedals would be added to the signal path. The amp EQ was set to noon and each EQ pedal was adjusted to suit the mode it was in.
@jeremymiller69337 ай бұрын

4 individual channels with seperate eq for each channel isnt as nearly complicated as it appears. Its actually 10x better and easier to dial in. for me... its more difficult to dial in an amp with less knobs if the eq is shared by both channels because it becomes a balancing act to make both channels sound great.

A warning: Apparently the PCBs on these amps is prone to becoming conductive. Looks for “JVM bias drift” for one of the issues caused by this. This only shows with a certain amps, but reports of this issue are starting to roll in (source: Brad’s Guitar Garage). Fixing this is extremely expenssive, and will most likely happen out of waranty. So beware if you are thinking about this amp. The TSL had the same issue until revision 17 or 21, and Marshall never rebuked customers :-( It’s not going to happen to all JVMs but there’s a risk. Finaly, I had one once. The power section is very stiff due to high negative feedback. I can recommend a simple mod to make it possible to modify it with a mod. Can make it more musical.

So yeah, find a cheap one and don’t overpay, then you can live with the (still rare) worst case.
