Find this “Sloppy Joes” recipe in our Pick Up Limes app to scale the amounts, get step-by-step photo instructions, and find detailed nutrition info. Or find it below:
INGREDIENTS
~makes 5 sloppy joes~
Filling
½ Tbsp vegetable oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 vegetable bouillon cube
1 Tbsp ground cumin
1 Tbsp paprika powder
½ Tbsp ground coriander
½ Tbsp dried oregano
¼ tsp ground black pepper
1 red bell pepper, finely chopped
3 cups cooked brown lentils
1¾ cups passata sauce†
1 Tbsp maple syrup
1 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp hot sauce
2 tsp dijon mustard
Coleslaw
1 cup shredded red cabbage
1 cup shredded green cabbage
1 carrot, grated
2 tsp apple cider vinegar
¼ cup vegan mayonnaise
1 tsp dijon mustard
¼ tsp salt
⅛ tsp ground black pepper
Assembly
5 burger buns, toasted
⅓ cup vegan mayonnaise (optional)
5 romaine lettuce leaves
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat a sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add the oil, onion, and garlic. Cook for 3 - 4 minutes, or until translucent.
2. Crumble in the bouillon cube and add all the herbs and spices. Cook for another 1 - 2 minutes, until everything is fragrant.
3. Add the remaining filling ingredients. Cook at a gentle simmer, uncovered, for 7 - 10 minutes for the mixture to thicken.
4. Meanwhile, mix the coleslaw ingredients in a bowl. Taste test and add more mayo or vinegar if desired.
5. Spread some mayo on each half of the toasted burger buns. Add the lettuce, pile on plenty of the lentil filling, and top with coleslaw.

Don’t bother trying to make it look pretty? This looks pretty to me, with all the colors, and the not-so-sloppy layering. BUT if this doesn’t look pretty to you, you must have a very high bar set for beauty. 😂😂😂

“There’s no need to make it pretty” It’s already beautiful thanks to the colours & food blended in to make a masterpiece. Love the way you talk about spending time with the food too. ❤️

I am not vegan or vegetarian and have never wanted to be. I usually have no interest in channels that are. Your food looks so delicious, your videos are so beautiful and you don’t judge or preach. You are more likely to influence someone like me to try eating like this than anyone I’ve seen. Every recipe I’ve seen here looks incredible.

try searching for empathy within you :) being vegan is about not ending somebody's life for your nutrition; as Sadia shows us, it isn't necessary
@thayrathyn
@thayrathyn 2 ай бұрын
@@teresamoscatelli239 You have to understand, it is very easy to preach that from the comfort of a developed, Western-world city, where the food is easily available and cheap and choosing lentils over beef is only as difficult as simply picking a different item from the supermarket shelf. I live in a much harsher mountainous environment, where most vegetables have difficulty growing and are very expensive to import. In my country, eating animal products is deeply engrained in the culture and modern-day substitutes virtually do not exist. Milk, cheese, cottage cheese and meat sustain us and represent more than 50% of our diet. Switching those out would be more costly than my family can afford, if not simply impossible without risking malnutrition. I deeply love and respect animals, we try to treat ours with the most respect and comfort that we can possibly give in our situation, but we need them to sustain ourselves. Never assume that someone is in the same position as you and has the liberty of making the same choices.
@lindasagripanti8119
@lindasagripanti8119 2 ай бұрын
@@thayrathyn then you shouldn’t feel like this applies to you. The vast majority of people on the planet rely on heavily stuffed supermarkets full of any plant you need to have a balanced diet but they choose to ignore the suffering of animals just because they have been taught that some of them are perfectly fine to exploit. If you don’t have the same food availability then you shouldn’t feel called out at all by this type of comments. The person said they have no interest in being vegan, not that they can’t, hence the critique on their lack of care, which is perfectly valid to do. If you eat animals for the taste or the convenience and not out of real necessity, you’re commuting animal cruelty by definition. You’re causing unnecessary harm. If you do however need to to survive, then we’re not talking to you and you can read the comment and just move on :)

Last night while I was planning a bike ride for this morning I saw this video and couldn't help but watch it on loop from how delicious it looked. I quickly cycled home just 1 hour ago to make this sandwich. I used tomato paste, fresh tomatoes and less cumin and it was the bomb. Never had a Sloppy Joe but this was the best one I’ll probably ever taste in my life!! Thank you 🙏

Getting messy is really so important for kids to learn about food! We sometimes get into the idea that they need to be clean and we need to keep their hands and face free of food- but that prevents them from learning about the food in a natural ways kids do!

Thats some decent junk food. All this hype about impossible beef (replacement) just averts meatheads to try real vegan cuisine. Also the ingredients list of meat replacements is looong and attempting to make vegan meat patties reminds someone more of baking or chem class. Rant over. Also vegan mayo tastes like salad dressing
