Why ‘the religious hippie?’
It was a nickname my friends gave me when I was in highschool because I dressed like a hippie and was a ‘wild child’, when I came back into my faith they thought ‘the religious hippie’ was now a more appropriate nickname and it stuck!
Who is your favorite saint? Saint Francis of Assisi
Where do you live? Chicago

You’re right God does have a sense of humor. there was this time that God had put it on my heart to tell somebody something that was very difficult. I don’t like telling people difficult things so I wanted to write it in a letter, I didn’t wanna call on the phone. but I kept getting this nagging feeling in my heart saying no call. so I’m having this dialogue with God in the bathroom while getting ready to brush my teeth and I said God do I really have to call? So I’m leaning over the sink brushing my teeth when I see a bar of soap …..DIAL. I laughed!

I feel you. Way back when I was just starting driving school, I sensed God telling me that I don’t need to go that day. I stopped on my tracks, because the pull was strong. I paused several times in getting dressed, doing my hair because of it. Pushed the urge away just so I could finally leave. Apparently my instructor was absent and no replacement for the day. I went back home, faced my mirror kinda laughing with a pouty face feeling like I should’ve given to the urge to call the school first. I felt God was smiling at me that whole time. Something even more weird, that He had a “jester” in His court, kind of the renaissance era where kings had one. Not sure if that represented anything else but this Jester was laughing mad at me, we couldn’t help but join in the laughter. It just felt like an intimate trio of friends laughing together. That’s how I discovered God the Father has a sense of humor. Can’t explain more about this experience, but I believe He has his own way to each of His children.

I learnt this opening prayer from formation with Opus Dei and it sums up everything "My Lord and my God I firmly believe that You are here, that You see me and that You hear me. I adore You with profound reverence. I ask Your pardon for my sins and grace to make this time of prayer fruitful. My Immaculate Mother, St Joseph my Father and Lord, my Guardian Angel intercede for me.

The “realness” of the imagined world is the truth that sustained quiet intuitives, like the Saints. It IS our keystone, that is why being “like a child” is so important: the access to decrement of the gut and ready imagination. I had to leave the Church and study with Bhakti yogis to learn what you’re discussing here (to their credit they truly love and accept Jesus as a practitioner and proponent of their craft). The issue was not theological but practical. In America we have a western tradition and need a western basis for community. The Church, it turns out, provides that. The saints provide that. The rosary provides that. I still chant hare krishna in honor of my blue friend who helped equip me to find and meet Christ where HE is, but it warms my heart to see Catholics rediscovering the Latin Mass, mystical prayer, and the special joy of communing with the Saints. This is YOUR spiritual legacy, there is nothing “foreign” about meditation. Chanting a mantra and a rosary with incense and sacred intention is effective in Latin or Sanskrit, particularly once you’ve been to the cabin a few times. 😅

Closing your eyes has been a tremendous help for me in mental prayer especially while praying the rosary! Another great help in staying focused during the rosary that I learned from Dan Burke's book The Contemplative Rosary is when you get to the name of Jesus in the Hail Mary, repeat something pertaining to that mystery: Hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus, who was scourged at the pillar for us, Holy Mary, Mother of God.... Also Dan Burke's other book, Into the Deep, is in my opinion the best book for anyone who is starting mental prayer. A short, easy to read book that will help anyone start mental prayer daily!!! God bless!!!

When praying the Rosary, we in Hungary always say the current mystery after the name of Jesus, in every Hail Marys. I thought this is how everyone in the world prays it, and I was very confused when I started to watch catholic youtube videos in English, and realized that's not the case. :) I think I read somewhere that people in Poland are saying the mystery in every Hail Mary the same way as we Hungarian catholics.

Another wonderful discussion…… everyone needs to listen to this man because he is a bridge between so many different Catholic groups. I personally prefer the term Christian visualization rather than mental prayer, which is too vague. the term visualization will attract new agers who are being drawn to the truth. A good point they made is that you don’t have to have an active imagination Because really the Holy Spirit takes over. In fact it is because I actually don’t have a very good imagination that I recognize that this is the Holy Spirit and not me!

Gabriel! I love all your vids bro and I just now found your page Amber, Im sure I will love yours as well but literally this is the first video i have seen of yours and Im already loving it! Just wanted to share how God helped me to discern his voice from my own thoughts and from the voice of the devil... obviously the devil is too roudy for his own good most of the time and its easy ,generally speaking, to know when it is him.. but the hard part for me was being sure it was God and not my imagination. Finally one day God dropped this super simple sentence in my ear. It is so simple that most people just look over it when i tell them like I'm crazy or something lol That sentence is this: " When I stop talking, I start thinking; When I stop thinking, I start listening." The trick is to say the first part out loud and the second part in thought. Say When I stop talking out loud and the rest of it in thought. Doing this makes you recognize your own voice that you speak is the same voice you hear while thinking.. that voice causes all our issues. It is unsure confused and the cause of all our anxiety. This voice is our voice . To hear God we must silence that guy or girl and start listening to the voice that knows all things .. I got immediately the first time I tried it when He first gave it to me. Others think im crazy and wont even try and some get it after saying it a few times. But this is the easiest way to get to that place of prayer you are speaking about and it works everytime in my own experiences! Feel free to use it it was a gift from God and I try to tell as many people as will listen. Keep on keeping on!

Great conversation. During our RCIA this last year they talked down on the Latin Mass over and over, about how it was so terrible when they were growing up. I think the fact that it's not the main version of Mass at this point in time makes those that do choose to go give it the reverence and respect it was designed for. I've only ever seen it online as there is no place within 3-4 hours drive that offers it, so the local NO it is (which is typically without issues).

Hi thank you for this interview. It is very edifying to know that other people pray this way. I have prayed like this for many years, but not really understanding what I was doing and whether it was OK to pray this way or not. I was raised Catholic but went away from the Church as a young man and came back in my mid 30s.(I am now 63). I would use my imagination to pray, and it would be very effective. I was drawn so much to Jesus and still am. I see his name and something stirs in me. I knew a little about mental prayer but I never read much about it and I didn’t know about all the steps. I just did it, and it felt good and over the years I noticed a change in myself for the better so I knew that somehow God was at work in it. I hope it’s OK but I put a link here to a song I wrote and recorded in the late 90s and it came from my prayer. I have a special place to go and see Jesus and this was about that experience. When I look and read the words now, I’m quite amazed, because it follows all the steps that you’re talking about: meeting the Lord, having a chat with him and going away with a resolution. The song is called Shine. The link will lead you to the song and to the words. alonetone.com/plisney/playlists/the-call-of-god/shine-9

One of the ways you can help with mental prayer to set the mood and a prayerful atmosphere is to play some Gregorian chanting on very low volume in your room and just let it pervade the space while you settle in and get ready to practice those steps for mental prayer. I find that very helpful, as Gregorian chanting isn’t like normal music which is more emotional. Gregorian chanting is more mental and even intellectual, so it has just the right frequency to bring you into your mental state, in a heightened, alert yet connected way.

This is a great show. I have always have difficulties with mental prayer, due mostly to laziness, although I love praying the original three mysteries Rosary daily, and I devote a decade of someone I know or someone who needs it. That has truly helped my prayer life. I especially find it meditating when I go for Rosary walks. But my mental prayer before I go to sleep is still weak and needs work. Converting to Catholicism five years ago as made it a little easier. This video helps. One book I have but I have yet to read I think is a Catholic classic, 'Difficulties in Mental Prayer' by Dom Eugene Boylan.

@gabiafterhours I have struggled on my own to achieve even a semblance of the mental prayer you both talk so glibly about. I am a stay- at-home father of two children (1 & 3) and when my wife is home, I focus on her and the kids. She gets up at 3 so we all go to bed early. Peace is impossible to achieve. Being undisturbed is likewise impossible. I also suffer constant physical pain due to my condition. You talk like the meditative state is easy and constant. Like a pro just telling the novice " you just do it like this." I want what you have but I need constant and consistent instruction

I'm not understanding the difference between meditating on the mysteries and using your imagination to go somewhere with God. Aren't they basically the same thing? Like if you're meditating in prayer, you're using your imagination to communicate and visualize God, mary, anything you decide to focus on. What am I missing if I may ask? Also, sidenote. A few years back I nearly committed suicide and dealt with heavy suicidal ideations every day. In may I felt this calling to say the rosary. Had no desire. Ha. But I felt I was supposed to do it. I pulled up youtube and typed in "rosary" or something similar. First video was ascension presents. Sevond video was Gabi. Ascension brought up 3 rosaries and I was like, "I think you're calling me to do this " Gabi brought up 4 rosaries on his video and I laughed and said, "God...don't push it." I said 3 rosaries that day. On the 3rd rosary, 3rd mystery, my mind went from suicidal thought, despair, hopelessness, to complete hope and peace. First time in nearly 5 months that I had any hope. There's much more to the story. But God used ascension and Gabi to drive a point. I now say anywhere from 15 to 30 rosaries a week.

I didnt realize this was revolutionary. Ive been communing with Jesus, Mary, Mary Magdalene, and St Michael for years this way. Its nothing complex. Just feel their love, see them, then flow with their energy.

One question about closing ones eyes for prayer..er for mental prayers..is that an absolute necessity? Cuz I find it easier to pray when looking at a statue with the fluttering of candles before it in the dark or with icons..instead of closing my eyes. So is it necessary or am I talking about a different kind of prayer with what I do, that's different from mental prayer? Also, I was taught as a cradle catholic to pray by stating an intention and then saying like 10 Our Father's and 10 Hail Mary's for said intention..is this common or just the way I was taught?

I think I've had glimpses of this experience but I always shut it down because I thought it was blasphemous. The problem I have when I enter meditation is that these intrusive thoughts severely just mess me up. I hate my own mind and the wickedness that can come through when I try to pray or meditate. How can I get over this?

I’m wondering if you have any suggestions for people who have afantasia, which is the scientific word for people who have the inability to create mental imagery. we don’t visualize … we see a blank screen when we try to visualize. Thank you.

God will give you grace in your prayers. Pray with devotion and reverence. Pray with attention. Do what St Teresa of Avila did--she made use of the images around her and she used prayer cards. She also had trouble with creating imagery in her mind.

I tried Gabriel's Canaa exercise, and I don't know if I was doing something wrong, or if it's because I'm just a catechumen but in my imagination Mary yelled at me that I should stop, get up, and go play with my kids instead of spending time on KZbin. Also how I keep asking for help with my marriage but I keep listening to KZbin videos all the time. That was like a month or more ago, and I haven't tried again since. I'm kinda intimidated now.

Please look into silent prayer. This is where you simply sit in front of an image of Jesus, such as a crucifix or the sacred heart, or even better the Holy Eucharist exposed in a church. There’s no need to use your imagination or try to visualize anything. This can get people into trouble because untrained and especially unbaptized people can attract the wrong kind of spirits and ideas to themselves. Silent contemplation is the highest form of prayer. You’re simply admiring your Lord God, resting in his peace, and receiving his quiet love. The exercise is “drier” in that you won’t have these fantastic visions that are being described in this video. But you will grow in holiness because this is the way of prayer of the great Saints. May God bless your journey toward becoming Catholic!

Thank you for sharing about using mental prayer with the rosary. I need to be a Darren for a moment. Word choice around hearing the Lord speak is important. I'm pretty sure I understand what you are saying. But, it is important to know that auditory hallucinations can be a sign of a serious mental illness. In some very rare instances, it may be the voice of God, as the Bible attests. However, I'd check with a loved one, a priest, or a medical practitioner before listening to an actually auditory voice. As well, for people just starting out with mental prayer, a short discussion with their priest or RCIA ministry about scrupulosity would be beneficial. None of this is meant to discourage anyone's prayer life. If you cannot check with any of those people for whatever reason, I'll parrot Gabriel and say pray the rosary.

What kind of new style of Mass are you both talking about? Lots of back and forth? 'Repeat after me' kind of model? I don't get it, there are some 5-6 places of prayer response for the late people, rest is all prayer by priest! I come from an Eastern Catholic background, facing the altar style, lots of songs, rituals. And a lot of prayer responses for the laity, like a lot! When you guys say there is a lot of back and forth in the new style of Mass, I can't wrap my head around it!

I don’t see images in my head. It’s called Aphantasia, it’s a phenomenon in which people are unable to visualize imagery. My spiritual director even said to me “ I am so sorry and he truly had the saddest look on his face” I’ve never known any difference. I didn’t realize people actually could say I’m 59 years old but now I’m extremely sad.
@rettaroo5972

Please don’t be sad. God gave this condition to you. Therefore, he wants you to use it as a gift. A gift of silence and peace and focus. Silent prayer is the highest form of prayer. The imagination is used for things like memory or conceptualizing things, but it is actually a distraction if you want to work towards union with God. Just sit before an image of Jesus like a crucifix or the sacred heart or, even better the Holy Eucharist exposed in a church. Look at him without forming any words or thoughts. Just look at him and admire him in silence. Rest in his peace, and receive his silent love. This exercise can be difficult to do but with your condition you actually have a great advantage! God bless you.

I don't know much about Catholicism, but everything I've heard sounds like a lot of distractions (ancillary things) from Jesus himself. I never understood the elevation of Mary as though she was a step above human and perhaps even a mediator (which Jesus said he took away); and why there's a distinctive "Virgin" in front of her name as though she's been reverted back to the time before she birthed Jesus' human siblings. Aside from not understanding all those kinds of surroundings I think there's a lot of helpful ideas here.

when Gab said that anything is fertile--I was shocked because after watching the video of Gab about mental prayer, I find myself imagining there was a cockroach crawling in the rock where Jesus was praying in Gethsemane. what's with insects?
