This is my first year fly fishing, I'm in the phase of being excited when I net anything. I have caught some "bigger medium" fish in the 18-20 inch range. Anything above that really intimidates me. Working up to it, this helped. Thanks guys!

Place: Secret, Bugs: my entire box, Rod: My favorite Euro Nymph rig. Otherwise enough beer to fit in the top wader pocket x2 and a few sammiches and protein bars. And don't you tell me you haven't or don't put beers in the top wader pocket on the chest, that's what it's for lol. As you said, big browns love the chase and love big flashy streamers for some reason, they seem much more predatory than any other trout species aside from tigers. Some of my favorite streamers for bigguns: Galloup's Dungeon/Sex Dungeon, The Zonker, The Dirty Hippie, and Sculpzilla.

Thank you. In my experience the key is to be at right place at the right time. It seems dumb to say but it's not so easy to synchronize. After a good streamer and you'll have a eat. But you will have only one chance. If you find a promissimg spot don't fish it often, be patient, because those big fish educate very fast. 👍

I'm new to fly fishing. (2 years) Thank you guys for all of your videos! Just to clarify, we are talking rivers and streams right? I caught a 21" brown out of a pool below a dam that trapped fish in it after runoff. I am still tickled pink, but was told I shouldn't be too proud because it should be counted as a lake fish which supposedly grow much bigger? Just curious about the differences.

I think they are just jealous. Lol. Fact - fish usually grow faster and bigger in lakes. But a 21” fish is a 21” fish. You put in the work and got it done. I wouldn’t let people rain on your parade.

2nd summer of fly fishin, my biggest so far are maybe 12-14". I hooked a bigger one but it stole my fly right before I could net it. That was a bummer, that thing fought hard.

Listening to this has built my confidence in my decision to start off with a 6 weight rod. While it’s tempting to buy a 9 or 10 and try my hand at pike and big fish, I realize I have a ton to learn before doing that. Knowing the 6 weight has enough power to let me progress into fishing larger trout is more than enough for a while.

My first rod was a 6 weight and it’s amazing I don’t regret it at all!

This was fun to listen to and I won't interject my relatively uninformed opinion on the fly size debate. I have seen massive fish caught on tiny nymphs. Also depends on species. Want to be a member of "The Brown Baggers Club?" My guess is Spencer is right about the percentages. On a bummer note, I caught some truly large (think smallish Chinook salmon) that had gone feral in a pond near me. They were stocked decades ago. Cal Fire had to use their pond for water to fight the Park Fire here. So they are sadly gone. I feel even more thankful to have had them take my 5 wt to the limit! Of more concern to me are the nice normal sized wild trout in the creeks that are in the cross hairs of this burn. Size doesn't matter if you lose or severely damage a nice , healthy fishery. The night fishing thing is truly something for the elite anglers like the guys from Troutbitten! I'm too feeble...

I have never caught a big fish - so technically I do not know if I like catching big fish 😂

I don’t believe that. I think trout are consumers of opportunity, and are more like bears, fattening up for winter, than they are like other animals….eating until full.
