Its really simple. Chords numbers just follow how high the chord is up the scale: Tonics: I, III Predominants: II, IV, VI Dominants: V, VII Tonics flow into predominants and dominants. Presominants flow into dominants. Dominant fall into tonics. You can and end with any chord. Just make sure the last chord also flows in the next (the first) chord. The root chord (I) genarally feels like the 'home'. The other chords make you go on the journey away and back to home. It really is all just about capturing a vibe. You also can go from really tense chords to chords that give you that feeling of releave after. Try to just capture your feelings, the theory will help you do this easier.

Hey man, as a music theory nut, I appreciate how you are trying to simplify it down for people to be more accessible. For anyone reading this though, if you look up stuff from online, you'll find some conflicting stuff that will generally be way more complicated than what Da4mula said above. In an effort to help bridge the gap and offer a bit more terminology to make sure all you lofi masters are prepared, keep reading. It's all about the function of each chord. The III chord will never feel like home, if you are playing in a major key, because it is a minor chord and is written like this: iii (lowercase means minor in music theory shorthand). Because of that, it is actually a mediant chord, which usually leads to a stronger predominant chord or the subdominant. The IV chord CAN operate as a predominant chord but it is actually referred to as the subdominant because a lot of music (including BroBeatzTV's first two chords he makes in this video) have a plagal cadence, which is where a IV chord goes directly to the tonic chord. This is also a staple sound in lofi music. The VI is kind of a toss up... it can also be a predominant BUT technically is a submediant chord, often leading from vi to ii, or vi to IV, before ever getting to the dominant chord. lastly, the VII chord is a huge toss up and basically can function as anything, except for tonic. Depending on the quality of the chord (major, minor, diminished, major/dominant/diminished 7th, half diminished) it can lead to almost any other chord. If it leads to the I, then it was a dominant chord, if it leads to the V, then it was a predominant. And if it leads to ii then it was a mediant or submediant chord. SOOOO... I'd put the chords like this: I : tonic ii : predominant iii : mediant IV : subdominant V : dominant vi : submediant VII/vii : yes (excluding tonic) Good rules of thumb for new lofi people is to stay away from typical pop progressions and try stuff that is more based around the circle of 5ths. Try these two chord progressions first: IV - I (put a flat II chord with a major 7 for extra bonus points ahead of the I) vi - ii - IV - I
