I dropped out of film school 2 years ago. The last 3 minutes of this video was like a breath of fresh air! I left because I became cynical of the filmmaking process, I lacked real experience (i was on the waitlist) and listening a lot of youtube critics and cinema snobs in school who get themselves off by trashing movies every which way to Sunday made me second guess every insignificant thing I tried to accomplish. Chris, not doing the worst movie list and admitting it gives you no pleasure really lifted my spirits. This has been a horrendous year as far as negativity goes, especially online. But being jaded, or worse pretending to be, to get notoriety isn't what being a filmmaker or lover (emphasis on "love") of films is about. You have the attitude of genuine artist and auteur's eye - I've seen it in your reviews and the movies I never would have watched if not for your channel. We need to get away from this cynical attitude when it comes to talking about art and should just focus on the good that can come out of it. Bad movies serve a good purpose in learning about how filmmaking, writing, acting, etc. do and don't work. We shouldn't stop being critical of those bombs, but we shouldn't make them a top priority when we talk about what we like in movies. I hope your work on your channel goes well into 2019 and beyond and one day I hope to see whatever films you put out! Good luck in film school and thanks for not letting the bad detract from the good in your work and the work of every other filmmaker or critic out there. Take care and Happy New Year!

Why did u drop out of film school
@nhlcbj4 жыл бұрын
Llama Lloyd aside from the reasons I listed above, I just didn’t want it anymore. The summer between my first and second year my grandma was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, she died a year later. Before she did she told me to never take shit off anybody. I just didn’t see it as something that would pay off or make me happy to do. Before school I was subbing and waiting tables and hated every minute of it. If I could do it differently I would’ve focused on editing, and probably just got a job doing that instead of going to school. But I was naive and desperate for a change in my life and jumped in without thinking it through. 5 years and $50k later I still kick myself over it occasionally, but in retrospect I’m glad I got out when I did. Idk your situation but do it for fun as long as you can, than decide if you want to make a career out of it. I hope that answered your question. Take care.

@@nhlcbj wow um firstly im very sorry about what happened to your grandma. My grandpa died a year ago due to pneumonia but i didnt really knew him because i couldn't really talk to him because he lives in korea and i live in austria which is so far away. But i still miss. Are u allowed to choose what u can do in Film school? Like do they give u an option like directing, cinematography, acting and screenwriting? Im only 16 and my dream is to become a film director. Do u think its worth all money? And ur time? Anyway I appreciate u still responding to comments u commented 2 years ago. I hope u reply soon🙏
@nhlcbj4 жыл бұрын
@@llamalloyd3196 Sorry for the loss of your grandpa, it's tough when you don't know them well. My grandfather on my dad's side drank himself catatonic before I was born and was basically a zombie til he died 15 years ago. Despite the gaps they still stay in your heart. I wanted to take some time to mull things over before I got back to you and here are a few things you should carefully do before you decide to take the plunge into the film industry: First off you need to be honest with yourself and really think about if you have the skills and the willpower to persevere. I went in blind with no real experience - the only one in my graduate class to do so - and I was way out of my element compared to the rest of the class. If you have any experience you need to build on it and be ready to go into school with a decent portfolio of plausible, affordable ideas that can be considered to be made. If you don't have any experience I say work on that asap - look for film volunteer work like production assistants, find local news and commercial production companies and intern for them, take some writing and photography classes and learn the basics of writing, shooting film and budgeting. Also you may find something else in the field you may be more interested in. For example I was the only one in my class with a bachelor's degree in English, and since I could write and critique well I was top of my class when it came to writing treatment notes for the directing class's screenplays. I never did any serious editing before I took my first class at school and the teacher said despite I was pretty skilled. Like I said before if I could do it again I'd go focus on note taking or editing rather than producing. That being said my next piece of advice would be to carefully look into what programs and classes each school you look at has to offer. If you want to learn on the job find schools that focus on that - research the teachers and get testimonies from alumni to see how they turned out. The school I went to was in Chicago and one of the teachers I had for business and legal affairs was a former attorney for New Line Cinema - all she ever did was brag about herself and we didn't learn jack shit. Idk how film school in Europe compares to here in the states (aside from not being a ripoff like here but I digress) but if they let you learn a little of everything I think that would be better for you in the long run rather than just focusing on directing - you'll learn more and may find something you'll enjoy more too. Last and most important: have backup plans ready. I love film and filmmaking but i realized too late it was never going to go past being a hobby. And after leaving teaching behind I'm now working at a hospital - which I enjoy but if you told me 4 years ago I'd be doing that I'd be stunned lol. Take the time and carefully think about what you enjoy doing most and what skills you can build on in the future - that way if film doesn't work out you can take those skills and find work doing something else where you'll be able to prosper and grow. Nothing ever goes 100% the way you think it will - even if the program is set up in a way they try to find you a job after you graduate - I believe only 1/3 of the people in my class who graduated are now working in Los Angeles in one degree or another. I have a friend who graduated and is now working to becoming a student councilor at her old college here in Ohio. You just don't know how things will play out in the long run so you have to be prepared for any and all contingencies. I apologize if I come off as patronizing or intimidating by dumping all this on you, but this was all stuff in hindsight I wish I did before I jumped down the rabbit hole. I'm happy with where I am now and I realized I would've been too stressed out and wound up fo the film industry - but you may have more luck if you're willing to put in the effort. Please think it over very carefully and decide what you want most out of this and what you can bring to the table in this field or any other field if you think it isn't for you anymore. Learn as much as you can before you start applying so you can hit the ground running and be able to show you mean business. Make friends along the way but realize they're chasing the same dream as you and there will only be so many openings available. Wether you choose to stay in Austria, come to the US or wherever you can find relevant work and build yourself up. Just know what you're getting into and do the best that you can. I'm sorry if that last part is a little Hallmark-ish but I hope you can find happiness and pride in this work the way I thought I would. And if you don't that doesn't mean it's the end of the work (despite what a shit year it's been , but that's another story). Get ready to work your ass off and if you really love what you're doing it'll be worth all the headaches and heartaches along the way. I'll help out anyway I can if you ever need anymore advice. I hope you do well no matter what you decide. Take care and good luck ^__^

I'm gonna say it. The pacing got tiring and the fishbowl lens was distracting and unecessary. the wide shots kind of turned me off. I guess that's more stylistic but yeah. And the last shot seemed a bit ridiculous and pretentious

I found that movie so boring tbh and I was really looking forward to it. I can praise the acting, and some of the cinematography but I agree the fish bowl lenses was dumb and the ending was really off putting. I know that was sorta the intention but it was so far away from the tone of the rest of the film. I say boring because there were so many shots that just went on too long. Every scene could have been two minutes shorter and would have gotten the same message across. Idk I feel like that was the most overrated movie of the year.
@reeldeal32275 жыл бұрын
@@maltesefalcon1356 Yorgos Lanthimos probably used the fishbowl lens to demonstrate how these royals were literally in a "fishbowl" (like celebrities nowadays). His third person perspective was also used rather brilliantly in last year's The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

@@TheAhmed098 basically the whole point of the movie is you are seeing the film from the main character's perspective. Respect your opinion on not making a "Worst Of" list, you make very valid points. Maybe for your best movies video next year you could put some musical interludes in with the poster/rank of the movie (like you have in previous years). I agree. There is a difference in destroying a young film maker's first attempt at doing something in the movie business and putting some movies which were universally disappointing in list in a video. I mean, if you (director, producer, ...) kill a whole franchise, like that of The Predator, there is no reason to protect them from this critique. Same thing for bad dialogue, bad scripts or other creative decisions. This is just going "soft" for the sake of it. Just as I enjoy watching a video with a top 10 of his favourites, I would enjoy a list of the bad or disappointing ones. Just to compare. But no, "let's not offend anyone". Also, everytime someone talks about critique, all the comments bring up "don't hate" and "haters". That's just stupid, this is not hate. Is everybody 11 years old here? Now the same people will probably call me "triggered".

I know it's not that orignal, but I don't think that I only speak for myself, when I say that your list would be more interresting than the majority of videos alike. It doesn't even have to be a list. Like so Chris will see this comment

I really haven't watched much films this year, but the ones I did really enjoy where: - Hereditary - Isle of Dogs - The Favourite - Ballad of Buster Scruggs - Roma (My Favorite, so far) Good but not my favorites: - Spider-Verse - Infinity War.

@@Daniel-hs6ct I don't really get why some people don't like it. Is it some of the pacing or emotional attachment to the main character?
