SYNOPSIS:
After moving to Sunnydale, California, Buffy Anne Summers just wants to be a normal teenager. Back in Los Angeles, her first Watcher had died; she inadvertently burned down the gymnasium at her old high school; and her parents got a divorce. The move to Sunnydale is supposed to give both her and her mother, Joyce, a clean slate. But then she meets the school librarian, Rupert Giles, and quickly learns there is no escaping her destiny. With Giles as her new Watcher, she reluctantly steps back into her role as the Slayer. But this time she is not fighting alone. She now has an inner circle of special friends-- Willow, Xander, Cordelia, and a mysterious young man named Angel-- ready to join the fight and drive in a stake or two if need be.
Buffy suspects that a ventriloquist's dummy may be harvesting organs from classmates performing in a talent show.

For me, this is the episode where the show starts showing the first signs of what it's going to become later. The mixture of real-life tragedy and supernatural horror with dark comedy, the subversion of horror tropes (the evil dummy in this case), the multiple red herrings, and the absolute crackling dialogue add up to one of the best episodes of the first season.

ad-libs were included in the final cut. Such unscripted bits are when Willow runs off the stage terrified and when Xander cries "Redrum! Redrum!"

For the longest time, I thought he said, "Rad Rob!" I just thought it was a cultural reference that I didn't get.

I love all the talent show acting in-jokes. Cordelia's off-key singing, the Scooby Gang's terror at having to be in the talent show (which is where most actors like SMG and Alyson get their start). The Power Circle is supposed to be a ritual that gives performers confidence, but Giles just says "Um, do your best". And the wonderful surreal final scene!

This ep was a very good example of how the show both subverts expectations and disguises the gut punch. Lots of humor, both goofy and witty, that overlays really grim, dark themes. It's not just the body count(although Sunnydale makes Cartel infested Juarez look like Mayberry), Sid was a tragic hero, doomed to a living Hell for decades, actively seeking death as a release. The Lore gets expanded as we get our first Slayer other than Buffy mentioned, emphasizing the worldwide nature of the Calling. Also, there are Demon Hunters and people other than Watchers know about the Slayer. Ever wonder about the girl who died so that Buffy was Called as the Slayer? And the one before that...and the one before that...

"emphasizing the worldwide nature of the calling" that's a matter of interpretation. sid's "korean chick" might be a slayer from korea, but might also be a slayer of korean ethnicity; this usage is very common in america, where many people know where their families immigrated from.

The title of the video can be (debatably) considered true in large part because the villain isn't overplayed by announcing a famous actor, giving said villain too much screen time, and/or making the villain the main guest star of the episode.

I agree. This was a well written mystery episode. I don’t have a fear of dolls and puppets but ventriloquist dummies creep me out.

Love this episode - it's a plot that's way more stupid than the previous episode - but it works so much better - mostly due to a far more witty script plus a great performance from the new Principal. Love it that also for the first time we're seeing Giles being portrayed as less of an authority figure and more as one of the gang.

Puppets in media are usually scary/creepy murderous dolls like Chucky. Joss wanted to flip the expectation of the audience. Also charisma carpenter can’t sing for her life

The foundation of the characters is being set. By this time the network had renewed Buffy for another season and it was to start in a few weeks. Due to the lack of faith the network had in the show, it was given a very very small budget and with the shows to be cancelled early if it failed miserably. That is why several shows don’t flow into each other and could have not been shown. Knowing the backstory helps in explaining some of the show’s choices. When we were watching this in the Spring of 1997 we did not care.By this time the Buffy audience was invested in the show. Enjoy your reactions and after show thoughts.You have many advantages watching the show today. One drawback is that so many of the original elements of Buffy have been copied and will not surprise or seem new but for us, this all seemed brand new storytelling.

writers love to make actors deliver lines demeaning actors. willow: a dramatic scene is the easiest way to get thru the talent show because it doesn't require an actual talent!

That's a dark thought that Marc might have killed his assistant, especially as he might have done it solely to trap Giles. Interesting, but depressing, idea. I do like that Giles is now comfortable enough around Xander (perhaps as a result of his deciding to keep Xander's secret in the hyena episode) that he's taking advice from him. I'm a little disappointed that this doesn't have any larger theme, and that there's almost no one-on-one action between the cast. Nothing like Buffy and Xander talking about his friendship with Willow last episode, for example. Group scenes are nice, but some direct conversation helps build character insight. Also, I wish that Buffy's mom had attended the show. I know Buffy said not to, but still. Well, if this is the worst episode of the season (as I sometimes rate it), they're doing pretty well, I'd say.
