The name Sugarloaf (Pão de açúcar in Portuguese) is because the conic shape of the mountain resembles the sugarloaf, which was the usual form in which refined sugar was produced and sold until the late 19th century, when granulated and cube sugars were introduced.

Haha, as Josh alludes to SK, it really just comes down to knowing the fundamentals of how most aircraft operate. I certainly don’t get things spot on all of the time, but following a checklist tends to get me pretty far and then I can usually “fill in the blanks” with prior knowledge. Most aircraft types tend to have similar systems logic, operating parameters etc and usually for a review, it’s just a case of learning where the differences lie and getting acquainted with the cockpit layout. I’ve always enjoyed picking up new addons and figuring out how they work and at this point I think I’ve become reasonably proficient at doing that. Again though, that’s not to say that I get everything correct 100% if the time (though I think I’m generally close enough to give each addon a fair crack). Hopefully that unravels some of the mystery, although I’m afraid it’s probably a bit of a boring answer haha. Thanks for kind words though! All the best : )

GREAT flight and heli. The external start-up frames had a wonderful blade rotation and the strobe on the pad was the best. When you were flying away - no strobe. When landing, great strobe. Thanks Mark! Yes, the Mini-500 looks quite “convincing” in the external shots, both visually and in terms of how it flies, I always think that says something about an addon. Fun facts: actual kits used Rotax engines; the gas turbine was developed but none were delivered. I was wondering about a gas turbine for a kit plane, seemed a bit exotic and expensive. Assuming the developer chose the authentic option, it is a Solar T 62 APU turbine. Creative choice. I would expect there to be issues: an APU should come out of the box governed around a fixed RPM (if AC) or generator voltage if DC. I would expect operating it as a helicopter power plant, with a range of speeds, might be a challenge. Anomalies in engine speed are most likely a problem with the simulator airplane. But there is some possibility that it is a result of adapting an APU engine by a company not quite up to adapting it to a very different application.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 11 ай бұрын
It’s an interesting point, OG. Not something I know a whole lot about myself, but I do know that if I was operating a kit-built helicopter, I’d (generally) rather it had a gas turbine than a piston motor haha. As you say though, probably a bit exotic / expensive for the average user. Either way, I guess it’s always nice to have a recreation in the sim, of an aircraft that never actually flew. Cheers for your thoughts. All the best!

I hit Vne in this yesterday. We were full-sending it off the summit of Denali Mtn. in Alaska. We just barely managed to get up to the 20,300 ft summit, despite it being about 2k ft above the service ceiling stated in the hanger. It was a real struggle. As you can imagine, at an altitude like that and off of a steep drop you can certainly reach ridiculous speed. I did get the needle past the end of the red, and was able to pull it back and slow down without issue. I didn't try to push it to see what would happen.

The sound of the turbine during start is not indicative of the T62 Titan that powers most M500 turbine conversions. Also, the whine inside the cabin is not accurate. There should also be a 2/rev vibration in the cabin that would make the experience more like an actual M500 turbine or any other 2 blade semi rigid rotor system for that matter.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info Rotorr. Never having heard a T62 myself, or indeed ever having sat in a small, turbine helicopter, the best I could do was make educated guesses with regards to the sounds. As I may have said in this video - certainly I have said it in others, I think the soundset is “convincing”, if not entirely accurate (ie it feels broadly appropriate for the type’). Cheers again. Much appreciated and all the best! : )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this sim. There are just a couple of changes I would make to enhance the experience. In actuality, the aircraft yaws (weathervanes) far more than other small helicopters in fwd flight, IMO. The actual T62-2A-1 whine is more pronounced than the sim and the engine has a fully hydromechanical fuel control vs. a FADEC. The start procedure is therefore, not automated. Overall, Got Friends has done a great job!!

I got it and love it, but found the HOTAS style throttle to not have the fine control needed for a heli collective lol. I disabled the forward/backward axis for throttle, and enabled the little finger rotary dial as the collective axis and it gives me much more fine control. I need to figure out the best RPM settings and such for cruise and adjusting the trim. My elevator trim setting does nothing, maybe there are heli trim options in the controls area. Thanks again for the fine video. Addendum; I think it is likely under Rotor Longitudinal Trim in the control bindings, I will try it later. Okay, I have set up a separate heli profile for my controls and it is a delight to fly.
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, There are indeed lateral and longitudinal trim binding options (as it seems you have found). As MSFS allows one to bind multiple controls to the same button, I mapped the heli trims to my trim hat also (as I’m unlikely to need to use pitch / rudder trim at the same time) and that’s been working well. I guess a separate profile allows one to set different axis sensitivities etc also, so perhaps I shall have to look into that : ) Cheers and happy flying!

Hello Robert, Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I haven’t had a chance to fly the Mini again since reviewing it (not that I wouldn’t like to, I simply haven’t had the time). Certainly, the aircraft trimmed well when I last flew it. If it’s no longer trimming properly, I would imagine either there’s a bug since the update, Got Friends added a switch for turning the trim on / off, or they changed the actual key bindings for the trim controls. Do you think any of those might be the cause of the issue? I’m afraid I can’t really offer up any more suggestions than that, not really knowing what the problem is myself. I hope those ideas prove to be of some use. Cheers and all the best! : )

At the moment it feels like a fancy Cabri ( which I despise in-game ) - no lateral trim change & a lot of forward - I mean it's slow as hell so there possibly *isn't* much dyssimmetry of lift - just like the Cabri, it's turbulence handling is minimal so it gets tossed around like a balloon, and it doesn't really have that change-one-thing-and-all-the-rest-changes, balancing on a pole feel of a helicopter. I patched in a little artificial stability ( xxx_gyro_stability ) to counter the ludicrous turbulence ( there is a really big whirly thing attached, that by itself should give something but apparently not! ) & that helped considerably, but the rest of it needs some work still. It's interesting, though.

Can't you bind trim controls?
@Karibanu
@Karibanu Жыл бұрын
@@joshallen4848 I have bound trim controls - I didn't say I *couldn't* change trim, I said there was no change in trim from the helicopter. I've just tested it again - no wind, rechecked no assists, pulled into a hover; added pedal, no lateral drift from the increase torque in the tail rotor to correct. Pushed stick forwards, no noticeable ETL ( well, that might be a characteristic ) but while there is plenty ( and like the Cabri I think excessive ) trim change fore-aft, there's literally no lateral trim change - no dyssimmetry of lift even at 90 indicated. Again, that's like the last time I tried the Cabri. Even coax rotors have a little given the bottom rotor is in the downwash of the top one.

Haha, I was actually wondering what your opinion of the Mini-500 might be Mr RD (given that we often seem to end up discussing helicopters). I’m by no means a rotary expert, but I found the little helicopter thoroughly enjoyable myself (far more so than the Cabri). I didn’t have any issues with turbulence, but I guess that was just luck of the draw on the day; oddly, I found that I did need lateral trim at certain points throughout the flight. I agree, that changing one parameter (collective, cyclic, anti-torque) doesn’t seem to have a whole of effect on the others, but I guess I went in with the expectation that the Mini-500 would be somewhat “accessible”. Is the update treating you any better (I haven’t tried it myself yet)? All the best : )
@Karibanu
@Karibanu Жыл бұрын
@@IntotheBlueSimulations No change ( wasn't expecting one, really ) - test above was with the update. You'll definitely need lateral correction in a hover if theres any wind at all, which is why I tested without. It is fun, no doubts there and I want to like it, I just don't find it satisfying. I'm not exactly an expert either - aside from my adventures in SeaKings as a sea cadet ( which mostly involved looking at things & wondering what on earth they did ) I've had a couple of hours in some sort of Jetranger a lot of years ago, and other than that it's been aero theory & a bunch of different sims. I've found that's enough to tell you when something is wrong a lot, but knowing how to fix is another matter ... One I haven't tried and I should at this point is the freeware 3rd party Cabri.

How does this compare to the handling of the Gazelle (third party freeware addon) in MSFS?

Hi Mark, I’m afraid I can’t really comment on that, not having flown the Gazelle in MSFS myself. Sorry about that. All the best! : )

@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations Жыл бұрын
Hi Rojas, The helipad / location is just part of the default scenery (although it might be that you need SU11 installed). Just find Rio on the World Map and the helipad is located just out to the east (I seem to recall) of Christ the Redeemer. I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )

I wonder if you or anybody knows a way of stopping others playing MS 2020 on my PC, every time my grandson plays and has multiple aircraft crashes I keep having to reset and clear my "profile" and "logbook" via the cloud save and start again, he's got loads of other games to play but insists on MS 2020, sounds mean I know, but when you delete your profile and logbook it also delete's all settings etc and I have to reset everything again.

Hello Regal, Apologies for the slow reply. It seems it is actually possible to run MSFS using two separate profiles. I'm not aware of the intricacies / haven't read too much into it myself, but hopefully this will help put you on the right path: www.avsim.com/forums/topic/583662-multiple-profiles-on-one-msfs/#:~:text=If%20you%20all%20use%20the,of%20the%20menu%20when%20playing. I can appreciate that it's frustrating, having to keep resetting everything haha, but hopefully this way your grandson will be able to continue enjoying the sim also (as a lifelong simmer myself, I'd hate to see him missing out ; ) I hope that helps a little. Cheers and all the best!

Spot on choice of scenery and opening segue way. During the forward cockpit views, I had a sense of flight vertigo .... a good thing. I'm wondering, what is it about flight-modeling the governor in these models? The same in FSX Acceleration: The Augusta Westland (native) has a touchy 'throttle' and never seems to be in a stable flight. However, the Robinson R44 (native) is a delight to fly due to it's handling (modeling) from the developers. Continued success and pray we don't allow any more balloons to make it across the Pond!

Thanks very much Stewie, I’m glad you enjoyed it (vertigo and all, haha)! Microsoft’s sims have never been the strongest when it comes to rotary flight modelling (at least not when it comes to the native choppers) - I remember struggling so much with the B206 in earlier iterations of MSFS and thinking it was all my fault haha. That being said, there are some great options out there, including the Dodosim B206 in FSX (don’t know if you have ever tried it)? Haha, I gather someone has already made a freeware model of the spy balloon for MSFS - maybe I’ll have to take it out in the sim at some point XD Cheers as always! : )

Hi Chris, I presume your question pertains to graphical settings? My settings are broadly as follows: - “High End” preset - Pre-Cache = Ultra - Terrain and Object visibility sliders set at 125% (sorry, I forget the actual names of them) - Motion Blur = Off - Glass Cockpit Refresh = Medium - AI Live Traffic = Off - VSync = On / 60fps That gives a nice balance between graphics and performance. I only run at 1080p though, hence the decent fps. The things I’ve turned off / down are known to be famerate hogs. Nothing flashy really. I do spend quite a bit of time tweaking lighting and weather in many of my videos though (both can make a huge difference in the sim). I hope that helps a little. Cheers and all the best! : )

Hi Slowhand, I did have a minor “panic” and have to go back an see whether the sim had perhaps reset my assistance settings haha (wouldn’t be the first time), but all assistance settings were off for the flight. I find that rotary aircraft can be rather tricky to get the hang of, especially without a full hardware setup etc. I hope that clarifies things. All the best! : )

Hello Bram, Most of the “walking” that you saw during the video, was simply the use of the drone camera / TrackIR and then a few tricks during editing. FS Realistic does offer such an option also, albeit the functionality does have some drawbacks. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJyai3Rjdqx0ba8 I hope that helps a little. All the best! : )

Hello Donald, You are correct, regarding the models that actually went into production. As I understand it though, the manufacturer also drew up plans for a jet powered version of the aircraft and whilst none were ever ultimately built, it is this jet powered version that Got Friends chose to model. I hope that clarifies things. All the best : )

Anything beyond that it was deadly I lost two friends in this helicopter.
