My kids (both in their 20’s now) both listened to metal from a very young age (i.e from the start: womb, baby, toddler, etc). Took them to festivals from age 15 onwards. For one the favorite band is Iron Maiden and Nu metal. The other is more into Metalcore and Deathcore.

I also say you throw some classic metal songs in there too. My recommendations: Metallica- Sad But True or anything off the black album. AC/DC- For Those About To Rock... We Salute You Judas Priest- Electric Eye Black Sabbath- Mob Rules Nazareth- Hair of the Dog Iron Maiden- Invaders Megadeth- Peace Sells Anthrax- Madhouse Deep Purple- Space Truckin' Ratt- Round and Round Quiet Riot- Slick Black Cadillac Van Halen- Runnin' With The Devil

Korn, Deftones are obvious choices but I would be like, Incubus S.C.I.E.N.C.E. - I'd choose this record because I think hits all the nu-metal points. That record is heavy, bouncy, catchy, songs you can sing to or scream or both. All the DJ stuff going on -on that record. Are their more/others, sure. I am just picking one here. If I had to pick one record that hits the points, is old school NuMetal and also is still considered modern. Good discussion.

I'd teach them as I was thaught. "Sehnsucht by Rammstein, finish it! And only when you're able to nail at least one song on that album, I'll give you a new one (Chocolate Starfish)." Rinse, Repeat, You know the drill.

A Gen-X father with a 7 year old, can confirm he loves the Deftones. Especially the more ethereal stuff. Then again, he also like post-punk/goth like The Cure so maybe its just him. 😅 That being said, as much as I'm not a fan of them, Linkin Park is a easy to get into, not super-heavy Nu-Metal band to start with.

As a lifelong Minnesotan, one thing that always makes me sad when discussing nu-metal is how American Head Charge is always left out of the discussion. The War of Art is a phenomenal album that rivals several other bands from the same era but the band was riddled with drugs and death and are now disbanded with almost no hope of ever coming back. AHC needs more love even if they are a dead band and I will champion them as much as I can.

@CrYpTiK_Kaiser3 ай бұрын
Hybrid Theory was definitely my gateway into harder stuff. But I think it's mostly the experience that goes with it. I liked rock growing up because I'd listen to Nickelback (laugh it up) with my dad, and albeit Christian southern rock, I'd listen to Third Day with my mom. It got me interested in guitars and a little gravel at times with nostalgic memories. Later in my teens when I came back from a much more rap based listening tendency, I found Linkin Park. Despite not knowing them until well after Chester's passing, they were a combination of the my rap focus and my rock nostalgia. When I found I Prevail, the doors were knocked in.

The first 3 metal/metal adjacent artists I remember listening to as a kid were: Rammstein Marilyn Manson SOAD Rammstein in general was my first exposure to music thats not sung in english and it blew my mind because I was a dumb child. I don't remember when I was first exposed to metal exactly, because my mum and dad would play albums of theirs in the car, and when I was a little bit older I could pick which cds we could play in the car and id pick either Eurovision cds or one of the metal albums we had. I'd also pick the Evanescence live album we had a lot too. Would I introduce these to a kid if they wanted to get into metal? idk depends on the kid.

Problem with Nik's point of view is he only considers english speaking people. When i was young i was listening to bands that had good sound, never really cared for lyrics cause english wasnt my first language
@ninadreams1273 ай бұрын
It makes sense though because he’s framing this also to show a kid gateway music that he grew up on and is iconic. Nik grew up in Canada so English music would have been the most accessible. He’s only a year older so we were kinda in the same boat. We could only get metal from the radio, CDs, and iTunes/Limewire type of sites that were available in North America. He mentioned all the bands that first got me into metal and I would definitely think to show my kid that first if I had one.

Hey now Nik don't put down Miley Cyrus, she ROCKS!!! I don't know if you've seen her more recent KZbin videos but she did a live show on Howard Stern WITH Metallica. She has a video rocking to "White Wedding" with Billy Idol (though not metal it still rocks)! Miley isn't anything like she was in "Hannah Montana," or twirking to whatever the hell song that was. lol Check out those videos though, I think even you would be impressed. Hell do a reaction video for the Howard Stern show with she and Metallica, let us all know what you think for that matter. Okay so I saw another Miley Cyrus video and I kind of have to reiterate my last statement. While I'm genuinely trying to defend her she CAN rock BUT she's still making bubblegum hack poppy pop crap bullshit while wearing hardly anything at all in her videos. WTF?!!! I guess I see what I want to see and ignore the rest. I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong or at least partially wrong. lol Back to the subject at hand....Limp Bizkit SUCKS!!! Fred Durst is a complete ASS though he's not the only reason I don't like them, their music is so...ugh!! I was watching music videos on KZbin one day and got caught in their algorithm. I was busy so couldn't change it right away, for every song I had to put up with I just kept getting more and more pissed off. I finally just stopped what I was doing and changed it. I LOVE Three Days Grace and I wasn't even close to a teen when I started listening to them. I had no idea Breaking Benjamin was a hated band, WTF?!!! No, I LOVE them! Now as for Linkin Park, everyone LOVES and talks about "Hybrid Theory" including me BUT so many have said they went soft after that. Maybe so but there's not a Linkin Park album I don't like. Some songs are not quite as good as others of course but I remember Stevie comparing them to Maroon 5....OH HELL NO!!! I already called him out on that one and I'm not afraid to call you out either but it doesn't mean I don't appreciate or respect your opinions. We just might have to agree to disagree.
