The class 153 is 76 feet long, slightly bigger than a 69 foot long class 40 diesel locomotive.

The single pipe exhaust stack runs up through the bodywork at the No.2 end (small cab end) behind the luggage rack/cycle stowage area, moved when they were converted from 155s
