He was and is a classy guy, then he was very competitive, he threw ducks but on target, loved those years he was there. Wish as coach it would if worked out, maybe in a decade or so he can come back as a coach. Thanks Ty for all you did for BYU

I started watching football the year after TY Detmer. Ryan Hancock is the quarterback that got me to love BYU football but watching highlights Ty Detmer was awesome.

Remember how Detmer had receivers who could catch the ball?
@FavreianVengeance13 жыл бұрын
@lordvoldemort578 It was a high volume pass offense. His int percent was still only 5 percent that season. Look at the TDs, Passing yards, Passing rating, etc. I will admit though, at times he had interception issues. But when he was on, he was amazing.

People, you wanna know how good this guy is? He would've been a two-time Heisman winner. He got robbed the year before and they figured they couldn't screw him twice.

@lordvoldemort578 Detmer's BYU did beat 1 ranked Miami and almost beat the powerhouse Penn State in the Holiday Bowl. They had the talent for a year or two and then a decade later they had a contender (but weak schedule). It's the weak schedules (among other reasons) that have prevented them from being a serious powerhouse. I think that's why they finally went independent once the MWC crumbled.
@FavreianVengeance13 жыл бұрын
@lordvoldemort578 Generally something like Detmer throws for 500 and 5 TDs and Faulk runs for 220 plus and 3 or 4 TDs in a shootout. I think Faulk ran for 292 or something once.

That upset of # 1 MAIMI , was huge victory. I think that secured the Heisman trophy.

@lordvoldemort578 I don't know if I think of em as greats. But I know that Detmer had a team or two capable of competing for a championship. They had a couple solid RBs. Willis and Hall. It was kinda like the Raven's former combo of MgGahee and Rice. Hall wasnt as built Rice, he was a bit taller and lightning quick though. So they'd use Willis to pound the ball (and he'd 'carry it like a loaf of bread' fumble at times) and use Hall to hit the home runs. Then they had some fast cbs and lbs.

@FavreianVengeance I guess In those days The teams of today OU, FLORIDA , USC were not what they are today USC sucks now. Was Detmer a comback king or was he just never placed in those situations because he was so good? Whos your favorite teams of today?

@lordvoldemort578 Actually, the BYU D gave up a lot of yards then. But they were kind of like the Saints Super Bowl defense. They were very opportunistic when it came to creating turnovers. Even when the team reached the red zone, you had a good sense a huge sack or turover was coming. They had big lines on both sides of the ball and that helped.

@lordvoldemort578 Florida has not played a non conference game out of Florida since 92. They essentially create as many home games as possible because they already know that the media will drule over SEC victories.

@FavreianVengeance Thanks for Relaying all this Info to me. It's nice to hear from someone who has seen it all before, and about being racial. Don't worry about it, we are all people and we are all created equal. Imagine a QB Like Detmer today and a defense Like, Lets say Florida's defense from 2008. WOOOOOW. BYU would be National championships every year. Rocky? I can Look him up but tell me about Rocky.

@FavreianVengeance Unfortunately though, they had too many letdown games though and never really came too close to realy winning a national championship. But they beat Miami and that year they almost beat Penn State, they were a powerhouse all year. It was obvious the talent level was high. But its hard for BYU to keep it high year after year. I think that's why they finally went independent; to command a stronger schedule and attract better recruits.
@lordvoldemort57813 жыл бұрын
@FavreianVengeance How good was Penn state Back then? Them getting a better schedule and attracting better recruits was a good Idea, Plus BYU Brigham Young is the great great great grandfather of Steve Young hahaha
@FavreianVengeance13 жыл бұрын
@lordvoldemort578 I think Penn State had 2 real close losses early against teams that ended up in the top 5. The rest their games they crushed people. They were arguably the best team in the country that year. BYU made too many mistakes in the bowl game and then almost mounted an incredible comeback. That's when the PSU DL made a line I never seen before that point and not many times since. He just stripped the ball right as Detmer took it back and ruined the comeback.

@lordvoldemort578 I followed his career. In general, he played excellent. And he generally picked up INTs in bunches when he was off. The day after he won the Heisman, he went and threw 5 picks against Hawaii. He probably wouldn't have won if they waited to do the vote. That's okay b/c he got robbed the year before. Anyhow, had he got full reps his freshmen year he'd probably be the all-time passing yards leader.

@lordvoldemort578 Penn State took a nose dive. For about 3 decades until about 2000 or so they were always in the national contention. Top 5 80's, 90's would have been Nebraska, OU, Penn State, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame (actually 6). Those were the teams always in the top 10. Eventually Florida, OSU, USC, Alabama bucked the system often by cheating.

@lordvoldemort578 Generally terrible or at best inconsistent. Nothing's changed. But I'd say during the Detmer years especially, there was hope. There was this LB named Rocky something that was an animal. He was all over the place, kind of like an Urlacher or Chad Greenway. And it was about the only time in BYU history we had 2 fast black corners, Gray and Mitchell. And I think one of the safeties was black too (not to be racial); but they were about as good as it got. Faulk still lit em up tho.
