I am definitely interested in some i'itoi onion starts in the fall when you sell them. They look great. Your grapes look fantastic! They are double the size of mine (probably because you water yours better than I do)..lol Your tomato trellace should do well. I've done that method before. Don't worry if some of the vines get damaged or look wilty afterwards, the suckers will take off from them and fill the area well and shade the tomatoes beneath. I'm currently picking off tomato hornworms and burying them under the wood chip mulch pathway about 6 inches down to decay. Your chickens and ducks will probably love any you find. Your farm has simply exploded since I visited you at your open garden event. I planted a couple of the luffa seeds I got from you and it is struggling...need to water it every day it seems or the leaves wilt. It's about 8 inches long now hopefully will start to grow up the tree trunk. It has been whacked back a couple times by cut worms, but it keeps growing. The other one I planted got taken down all the way by a cut worm so it is gone.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
That's good to know with the tomato trellis. It seems to be doing well so far. Sorry to hear those loofah are struggling a bit. We usually water them daily for the first month or so and then you'll be able to cut back to a couple of times a week. Once they're a couple of feet long they can usually hold up. That being said, we'll be planting for the third time on our second trellis after losing the starts to bunnies. One great thing about these, as long as you get one to take and produce gourds you'll have plenty of seeds for years to come!

@@blueberryrl between those 2 I would go with the aprium. It's a consistent producer for us and the fruit ripens well. The only caveat is the aprium does better with a pollinator (another apricot, we use the Katy) while the Santa Rosa does not need one.

Do you guys do much sunflowers? I haven't seen them in the videos. I think they are just the most beautiful flowers and they are so hardy. They love the heat and can really go most of the summer. Additionally, the birds will eat the seeds and it helps keep them off of some of the other crops. Note I said it "helps" doesn't stop them from eating other stuff. They will eat what they eat and there is no stopping it short of netting but a few alternatives do help. Also, I don't know what you need for your bees but they might be good for them too. They are so easy to grow. You could literally just push a seed down into your wells around the trees and get them all over. I also use them to trellis stuff. I got tomatoes and Armenian cucumbers growing up some. Might try to grow cantaloupe up them next year.
@EdgeofNowhereFarm
@EdgeofNowhereFarm Жыл бұрын
Hey Alan! We have grown them a couple of times and are trying to seed a few into the area around the banana this year. The biggest challenge we have here is the quail. They eat pretty much any start that comes up that's not covered and we have lost entire crops of sunflowers to the little buggers.
@irisdude
@irisdude Жыл бұрын
@@EdgeofNowhereFarm Do the quail go into the chicken/turkey/or duck runs? If not, can you plant them in those runs protected from the chicken/ducks/and turkeys? If you can get seed heads off them, you can wire up a seed head or two to the fence of the chicken run a foot up from the ground and the chickens will have a blast pecking the seeds out of them.

Ee-toy, long E, one sound. Ee. As I understand, they were brought from Asia with the Black Ships (ships owned by the king of Spain taking hides and tallow to Asia and bringing back silk and so on). We prefer to cut tops, chop and dry them to use instead of bulb onions. i'itoi are strong-flavored and will continue to grow till heat knocks them back till the monsoons. When thinning, we save the roots with an inch of top, and plant them to make new patches. Most all of our onions are raised for tops, not bulbs. The bees are beautiful Funny watching the pigs act like humans (AKA being piggish :) But, if I had a mess of ripe apricots, I'd be no better LOL. Garlic was iffy. Some beds were so not good I just piled a foot of mulch over them to plant something else. They'll come back during the monsoons for garlic scallions. niio
