Man those onions look great!! I’m jealous as I’ve not had a lot of luck growing them. Would love to see some videos of how you process the different produce, like how you hull peas/limas, and how you save them (canning, freezing, etc). As always, top-notch video and looking forward to Friday’s installment!!

I dearly love to eat fresh green peas, but I hate to shell them. Got roped into it a lot as a kid. Handy when it comes to brute force but not so good at fine work. I can't imagine shelling eighteen quarts but having all those peas in the freezer would be a dream come true. Good gardening there, my friend. Jasmine Street Farm

Question. A dear friend of mine, whom is elderly, gave me a “strawberry onion “ The story goes that berry farmers use these onions for pest control in their fields. They are super sweet and very large in size. Have you heard of these or this practice or is it some ole farmer lore. Thanks. Love the channel and your website!

I usually wait until the tops start falling over, and then I push over the entire row of onion tops onto the bulb of the onion beside it, in order to shade it from the Sun. If it stays dry, they will cure in the field. If it's rainy, I pull them and put them under a shed to finish curing. I usually scissor off the tops and roots when most of them are dry. I bag the best onions for storage and those with defects, such as bull necks, I use first.

The softneck garlic should easily store until Nov so you can replant it. Once the garlic bulbs are cured, are you going to store the ones for replanting in the frig or wait until Aug/Sept to put them in the frig? The onions were impressive. Mine have been battered by the extended cold we had this year. Very unusual how cold it's been this spring. I'm guessing my onions won't be ready until mid-August or they will just be small. 500 to 1000 figs next year. That will be a nice little side business for ya.

If you cut the garlic scapes off, they will put that energy into bulb production and not flowering. Once scapes appear there is usually about two weeks to harvest time, but judge by the leaf die back. Softneck garlic in general stores much longer than hardneck. I have some varieties that last almost a year! Unlike onions, garlic should be put in the shade to cure as soon as it is harvested or it will sun scald.

Yes, I'll probably actually put them in the fridge around September so I can then plant in November.

Travis great rack they’ll get plenty of airflow and spaced well. You’ll have lots of onions and garlic to last you at least for 6 months. Soft Neck Garlic actually store well, Hard Garlic doesn’t store as long, but I’m getting some Hard Neck sprouting now, ready for replanting the bulbs. Lots of peas.... Have a great day Travis, I really enjoyed today’s video very much, naturally being Onions and Garlic Once the elephant Garlic is ready and the plot is clear will you be adding a few inches of compost on the no dig before planting the next crops?

We usually only add compost in late summer / early fall. We'll be planting sweet potatoes where the garlic is now.

So if your cats live with the storage rack, you could call them Pole Barn Cats. I had something worse than a polecat last night to deal with. I found a dead possum up in the back part of the property. Dug a hole about 10' away in soft soil and move it. The smell was so bad I almost threw up. Couldn't go back to cover it up until this morning. Couldn't figure out if the possum got into somebody's rat poison, a cat got it, or it was just old.

We see a possum around here every now and then. The animals usually run them off. I bet that was a stinky mess!

I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be able to ship plants with soil to Hawaii, but I was wondering if you would consider selling cuttings? We can’t grow all varieties here, but I was interested in few varieties you grew. Enjoy watching and learning from your channel.

We might sell cuttings one of these days, but I'm currently devoting anything I can cut to growing plants. Although some varieties are easy to propagate, others are quite tough. Selling plants helps make the customers much more successful as opposed to cuttings that may or may not root.

Curious what's your favorite butter bean. My grandpa always grew Jackson wonder speckled butter beans so it's all I have ever grown for sentimental reasons.

I prefer the climbing types because they're so much easier to pick. We really like Christmas Lima Beans.

Had to replant some because of the heavy rains we got right after planting. But it's looking pretty good. I'll try to give an update soon.

Unfortunately, I was too late for the fig tree sale. Hopefully, I can get one next year. I do have a question about fig trees. I have a volunteer fig tree that is about 3 years old. When can I expect to see fruit from this tree? It has never fruited, so I am wondering if there is a reason. The tree is about 10 feet tall now. I really enjoy your content and have learned a lot and continue to learn with each video! Thank you!

It should have definitely fruited by now. Some of our trees will produce a few fruits in the first year, but they all produce fruits by the second year. I wonder if it's a dud volunteer?

We put Nature Safe 8-5-5 in the furrow at planting. Once the plants started growing, we side dressed with Nature Safe 13-0-0 twice, about a month apart. We also ran some Agrothrive General Purpose through the overhead sprinkler a couple times, but I don't remember exactly when we did that.

You are supposed to cut the scapes off the garlic otherwise they won't produce bulbs.

Travis, doesn't the humidity cause them to spoil faster?
@LazyDogFarm

I'm sure it has some effect, but not much we can do about the humidity. I don't have anywhere indoors to store that many onions.

Onions from seed question here... Every time I have ever grown onions from seed they just seem to take forever to get out of that first leaf stage and start growing. Is there anything special I should be doing to boost early growth?
@LazyDogFarm
@LazyDogFarm 2 жыл бұрын
We start fertilizing ours when those first leaves "flip" up. Also helps to trim the tops of the seedlings -- seems to toughen up the transplants and make them more durable during transplanting.

Travis did talk about this. Keep them dry and with air circulation. I put mine on a workbench in the garage for a week or 2.

What Steve said. We could basically cure them on that rack under our barn if we wanted, but the sunlight just helps speed the process.
