@eolsunder

i don't know really, is just playing the birthday tune sophisticated? To me, not even close. I don't even consider it a "prank" if they just play the birthday tune, thats basically commonplace. A prank would be maybe speeding up the piece, one section just playing off-key for some reason, etc. Playing the birthday tune? NOT A PRANK!

For backstory, this was performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (and Toronto Mendelssohn Choir) for Sir Andrew Davis’ 75th birthday! As you can see in the video, he was truly shocked when the orchestra began playing happy birthday! I really enjoyed the Happy Birthday pranks. Several years ago I was a guest artist with a Dutch orchestra and one of the rehearsals fell on my birthday but I hadn't mentioned it to anyone. We were rehearsing the Telemann concerto I was doing with them or so I thought. The conductor gave the downbeat, I played my first note along with the orchestra, and then I stopped because I knew immediately that they were not playing what they were supposed to. They played a lovely version of the Dutch birthday song for me. I was so touched at their thoughtfulness. This was a very fun video.

As a conductor i must admit that the first one touched me deeply. There is no bigger compliment or, no bigger i don't know achievement even, to just be together with orchestra, no matter the institution and no matter the other eventual disandvanteges. It's amazing that most likely someone from the orchestra members took their effort in order to perform this for Sir Roger Norringnton's birthday while they most likely were rehearsing Beethoven's 3rd in E-flat major. Honestly i am not surprised why Sir Norrington seems so happy, this is the biggest compliment an orchestra can give to a conductor i tell you! Short edit: I also forgot about one thing which is absolutely heartwarming for me honestly. It's wonderful that even if anyone who participates in a production has birthday meanwhile rehearsing, it usually happens that all orchestra members together with a conductor and rest of the crew (opera-speaking) agrees for that because mister Heniek from technical crew had birthday during the rehearsal time it's honestly amazing! Another edit: The one with the conductor recieving a happy birthday arrangement from the orchestra just made me cry. Nobody bothered that it was during a concert, apparently this conductor was liked by the orchestra and choir and other members but still, it just feels like a glorious pleasure as if you have birthday and then out of sudden, 70 people out of blue modulate from the piece you're supposed to do and then play and sing happy birthday just for you. My heart cracks as i'm writing it, i fucking love to be a musician nothing can beat that!

My high school choir pranked our conductor for a Christmas Concert. He had a wand he loved to use, but the thing was ANCIENT! He had it for 10 years before I graced his choir room. Anyway, we had been browsing(with the help of his wife, who taught Spanish), and found a wand he REALLY loved, and had it engraved with his name on it. It arrived about a week for the concert, so we had to work fast. We rigged his old wand to snap in half if he hit the music stand too hard, which was his sign that we screwed up on something, and he was trying to bring us back in line. The new wand came in a tube, which we put in a box, then inside another box, then inside another box, which sat under the piano bench at the concert hall. We convinced our entire Soprano section to drop into a dissonance with the chord we were building, making the piece sound off. As predicted, the sopranos dropped, he whacked his old wand on the stand, and it broke in half. We finished the song, as 2 seniors brought the box up. The look on his face when he finally got to the wand inside: PRICELESS! First thing he did was point at his wife, who was also the piano player, to which she mimed, “not me, them”, pointing at all of us. He was shocked for a minute, then told the audience that his choir bought him a new wand. It cost us $450, because of the high quality we paid for, and the engraving, plus it came with a stand.

I remember going to a concert by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in Salt Lake City. One of their choir members was celebrating her 80th birthday, and the conductor had a bit of a surprise for her. When the concert began and he had gotten his opening remarks of welcome out of the way, he signaled to the organist, who stepped on the low C pedal and thundered out a sustained roar on full organ. The conductor then turn to the audience and motioned for everybody (choir included) to stand up. He then gave the signal and with the orchestra joining in with a rousing intro, the entire Mormon tabernacle choir, with audience, full organ , and orchestra sang happy birthday to this one choir member. It was glorious!

The next day was Sunday, and my aunt said "Well, we're here on Sunday, we have to go see the choir." We were sat about ten rows from the back. It was dry and warm in there, and my eyelids started closing as soon as the lights went down. About fifteen minutes into the performance I lost the battle and fell fast asleep. In university I went to an open rehearsal of their excellent symphony orchestra. The conductor at one point yelled, "Forte!" The orchestra player louder and he then yelled again, "Forte!" They played louder still. And he then yelled even louder, "FORTE!" Finally the concert master stopped the orchestra and said, "We are playing as loud as we can!" He said, "Yes. And all I want has been forte." Everyone found this funny.

@@M_SC probably how the orchestra players kept on getting louder as the conductor yelled forte, but all he actually wanted was forte, not crescendo. the orchestra players would think that the conductor yelling forte would to be go louder and louder, but the conductor just wanted a nice, decent forte.

My sister plays in the university orchestra of our city and a chellist wrote a complete orchestra version of the Tetris-soundtrack just by himself (not a music student, most of them are engineers there). In their concert, when it was time for a bonus piece (do you call it encore in english? I wasn't sure) they had rehearsed the Jazz suite by Shostakovich which the conductor started conducting, but instead the whole orchestra just started to play the Tetris soundtrack. The conductor's reaction was so funny and wholesome, he kinda just stood there and conducted on the beat and the arrangement sounded sooo nice! :D It was the best, and I still have the piece stuck in my head every once in a while even though it's over 5 years ago :D

Great video gentlemen. A prank we used to play was in 'March Militaire La Ronde', where we played the first 3 notes slowly to disguise it. The notes in question were the first notes of 'God Save the Queen '. We always caught someone out when they stood up. Fun. Also check out Maestro Gustavo Dudamel taking the leaders violin, and handing over the baton in 2017, to perform Berliner Luft. Great fun, and wonderful to watch. You guys be good. Great videos.

The best rendition of happy birthday I ever heard was at the cast party for my first ever professional opera. It was at a restaurant that used to be a church that was just down the street from our theater. And I guess opening night was also the company musical director’s birthday, so the company decided to sing happy birthday to him. Acapella with full harmonies. I started singing along when they first started but I quickly realized I was very much outclassed and stopped so I could listen. It was, to this day, the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard. I wish I had a recording of it.
