I just got back into oud after about 15 yrs and am finding that the "standard" seems to be changing, as many string makers are now using lower tension 5th courses, which feel and sound best tuned to G not F. I don't mind much either way, as that is just transposed Iraqin tuning, which I'm used to, but it's something to be aware of. Cheers

i was told that tuig turkish ouds to C-C doesn't make them sound nice. Should I tune it in standard turkish tuning for my oud?

Ideally, you should make sure you have thicker strings when tuning a Turkish oud to C-C. But for a learner it's not a big deal.

I’m from 🇺🇸 and was wondering which strings you would recommend? I’ve heard mixed views on D’Addario though they’re my go-to for classical and electric guitar. I ordered La Bella’s but they rust pretty quickly.

I usually recommend daddario E95A set for Arabic tuning. I like this set because it's inexpensive and settles fairly quickly. Strings will rust depending on many factors so I can't definitively if one rusts less from my experience.

But in general I do a lot of custom sets with la bella lute strings, aquila lute strings, etc. I don't recommend this to most people. Ultimately, I always say to experiment and find out what strings work best on the oud.

@@OudforGuitarists I have a Turkish oud but prefer this tuning. Thicker strings on the bass side is my preference for any stringed instrument. Thanks for responding!

yeah I find naming Tunings by region is a bit arbitrary and undescriptive.

There are different ouds around the world with different lengths and play styles that require different tunings, so claiming one tuning is best is a bit far fetched.

That’s true but I think from the perspective of guitarists like myself that are learning the oud, this tuning makes perfect sense and is easy from a positional viewpoint and recognizing intervals. Thanks Navid!
