I wish clotheslines were more common in the US. They are actually banned in many areas because they're considered trashy (which is ridiculous). It makes me mad having to use a hot dryer on a bright and sunny day. It's a complete waste of money and energy.

For your new dryer, consider using "Total Vision Wool Dryer Balls" you put three in a dryer load. Not only do they soften your clothes but they also eliminate wrinkles. Under $10.00 for a box of six. An important reason for the success of your washer and dryer is the fact that you DON'T overload. Even the biggest washers and dryers can't function at their best when too many things are stuffed in. The washers can't rotate efficiently and the internal belts get unbalanced. And if a dryer is too full, the clothing can't tumble properly, the air can't circulate. There are hard plastic anti static balls with surface nubs that you can put in the dryer, putting them in between the layers of fabric. They help make spaces inside the layers to help the warm air circulate.

That’s true :)

I used three small tennis balls but they didn't work as well - do you think the regular sized ones would work better?

Try two of the large tennis balls. I was amazed how well it works in my regular sized dryer.
