I have the utmost respect for you for using free software and Blender without expensive and silly addons. This way, people can learn how it's done at the base level and make informed decisions on what to buy for their workflow later, if any. There are too many addon leeches in the Blender community, while everything can be done efficiently for free.

For windows, linux and mac, krita is best for texturing... I can make you count, how much freedom it gives you with so much full fledged raster editing feature, all game artist use it and hence it has superb community of developers.
