One of the comments here mention goldfish/koi hybrid which make the goldfish to black. I've heard this said by koi experts too regarding people who keep koi and goldfish together. That said I bought 30 feeder fish for my pond a year ago. They were 19 to 35 cents each. The feeder tank was packed with these poor fish. I carefully selected all 30 fish based on their colors and patterns. 3 of them were dark bronze. One year later and all of these fish are not only beautiful but also went from one inch feeders to 4 - 6 inches. The 3 bronze ones are now black and are 6 inches each. Some of these goldfish including the black ones I could probably get 15 to 20 dollars for it I were to sell them! As for tank size when it comes to comet variety golds, one is good for a 40 gallon. Anything from 2 to 5 need at least 100 gallons and if you have 30 like me, you need a 500 gallon and up! My pond is a 500 gallon intex pool that is two feet deep. My fish have no problem wintering over outside in it. And our summers are hot and winters ice cold! The pool is completely set up like a natural pond with river stone on the bottom, small bolder size rocks and plants. Outside pool wall is dark brown with nice landscaping all around it. The water is Crystal clear year round with great filtration and water changes are done once a month during the spring and summer only. I accomplish this by simply running my garden hose into the pond for 45 minutes. Just let the water run up and over the sides. What about the chlorine in the tap water? No worries! These are goldfish and it doesn't even phase them. Plus the chlorine leaves the water within 24 hours anyway.

If you are stuck trying to choose between koi or goldfish, keep this in mind..... A collection of goldfish will require 100 to 500 gallons of water. The comet variety can easily reach 8 to 12 inches! They also can live up to 20 years. Koi require at least a thousand gallons of water or more of you plan on having 10 or more. They reach 15 to 24 inches and can live for 40 or more years! Whether goldfish or koi, be prepared to buy big suitable homes for them!!!! Anything less and they will only suffer and die soon after.

I've read somewhere that these so called "black comets" are hybrid between goldfish and koi ,and sterile. I have not been able to confirm if this is true. You can see they have a different shape than typical goldfish

Lovely healthy looking fish. I bought some from a local supplier and put them in my pond. Twelve all told and growing fast! They should keep their colour.

If these are indeed a pure black version of a comet goldfish then you've really got something there. If however they are cross between a comet and a karasagoi (black koi) as some people have implied it is most likely they will be sterile so will never be able to breed. I have seen goldfish/koi crosses before and they have all been sterile. It would however be nice to see if breeding is possible and more importantly if the stay a true black as they age.

They are still black to this day
@mykoiobsession4 жыл бұрын
That's nice to hear but the true test will be to see if they are capable of producing offspring that also remain black for their entire lives.

An update on mine, I have found out from people on goldfish forms whom have kept goldfish for decades, that they are half comet/koi. It also explains mines behavior. They do stay black as well however, as mine has grown and large ones that I have seen is there belly;s become a little more golden.
@gyalsnextman47255 жыл бұрын

Not to hard to get this fish. It's hard to get the ones that are completely jet black with no silver on the bottom. These ones are more Grey. You get these black commets by breeding a black Moore and a commet goldfish. If you breed a black Moore and a sarassa commet you have a like 1 in a million chance of getting a jet black fish with red tops. It's very hard to get it though. You end up with tons of defect fish when you breed the 2. You get tons of regular commets with bubble eyes like the black Moore, you get black Moores with single tails, you get short fat commets. I kept a big fat commet thats named Dr. Chunks. I use to have a larger one named Dr. Chunks Sr. But sadly he passed away from a parasite from the previous owners neglect.
