Crazy when you think back on it that Kawhi was going to be one and done anywhere he went if it wasn’t LA at that time. So the Raptors giving up their franchise player to get Kawhi was the biggest, best gamble ever, and it paid off tremendously.

What’s also interesting is that the Raptors had their best regular season record in 2020 right after Kawhi left for not a thing in return, not even cap space. So in hindsight losing Derozan wasn’t even a gamble because Derozan and then Kawhi left for nothing and they were still elite regular season team. Lowry was the true engine and losing Derozan allowed Siakam and VanVleet to step up. I love Derozan but the “gamble” of trading him for nothing was worth it 10/10 even without the chip

You are all so wrong. Stop being so short sighted, look at the big picture here. If this was Paul George, CP3, Anthony Davis then sure, take the supermax. Maximize your career earnings. Be a franchise player. Thing is, this is Kawhi Leonard. This guy is tied with KD for second best player in the NBA after LeBron. One stand out season, they overtake him. This is about the long term, building a legacy in a big market franchise that will be enough to set you up, not for life, but for a hundred lifetimes. Look at Jordan, Magic, Shaq. Look at their career earnings, versus what they made AFTER they retired. LeBron will be the same, a future billionaire not from supermax contracts, but from his brand. Leonard is in a unique position. He has the talent to make it to that level, but he needs to do it in the biggest market. Ain't no GOAT ever coming out of San Antonio; their players will always be underrated, that's just the way it is. When all is said and done, if KL plays in Toronto like he did a couple of years ago, goes to LA and keeps that same form, all his antics, bad press etc will be forgotten about. The sky is the limit. Give up 80m now, for 800m in the near future and the titular role in Space Jam 3? Yes please.

Also, Kawhi isn't an undisputed top 3 player in the league. Plenty say AD is ahead of him along with Lebron, KD and Curry. Only way he gets that status of lifetime legacy is to win with the Clippers. Kawhi was leaving anyway next summer for nothing. This past year Kawhi did next to nothing for the Spurs with his injury. So they basically lose Danny Green for an all star in DeRozan and a much needed center in Poetl who will see good minutes on the Spurs. The Spurs won the trade. Toronto got 1 year of Leonard and gave up a young very good back up center and an all star and a first rounder.

He could have gotten a spurs supermax deal of $219mil over 5 years. Since he got traded the most he can get from an extension is $108mil over 4years from Raptors. If he becomes a FA next summer, which he certainly will, he can get $190mil over 5years. The smart move is to sign a short deal and then get the supermax when he has 10 years in. The bigger shoe deal he will get in LA will more than compensate the salary loss. Apparently Nike was only offering $20mil over 4 years. The other top 5 players get much more. Because Toronto can not offer him a super max, he will become a FA next summer. Lakers will be waiting for him.
