Can’t thank you enough- I really jumped the gun with our rehomed GSD. She initially recalled, I realize now, cuz I was the only trusted anything in her life. After like 5 months she just blew me off for other people and dogs. I’ve started over with great success because of your videos- YOU are a master teacher. Thank you soooo much!

I feel like Tom is the only trainer out there who also works with hounds. Lots of other people just have their highly trainable shepherds and malinois and border collies and labradors... While those may have their own challenges, they are all bred to work together with humans, while a hound is bred to work independently from the human, preferably even when kilometres away.

been training this to my new adopted chihuahua mix. One day when someone was knocking on my neighbors door and I opened it, he ran outside the door - the recall worked like a charm! I think recall is essential for any dog owner.

I have taught my 12month Cane Corso how to come with very similar tactics but I’ve also taught her to do a ‘flyby’ where she has to just stop what’s she’s doing and catch up. She absolutely loves that command because she knows she’s still on a break and not having to be under strict rules again

You can combine this with another drill I just learned from Sonja Nordstrom..when the dog gets close, take your non treat hand and grasp their collar, or “receive” the collar as they come close..then reward. This trains them to never fear the handler reaching for the collar, or running away/avoiding the reach for the collar..

Great job Smokey! Thank you for this video, Tom. It's so important to take this step by step, and to not be afraid to go back a step (or two) if you're not getting the results you require from your dog. I took my inlaw's GSD to dog training (sadly my landlord does not allow pets...) and in class we were always told a 'full recall' ends with touching the collar, so you can click the lead back on. Keesha was a beautiful dog, and her recall was solid because we took our time to learn it.

Best dog trainer ever!! At what point would you stop giving treats for reward? And if so does that ruin the previous training?
@erichenderson1363 Жыл бұрын
I would say ASAP..all dogs are different..some are treat driven, praise, or toy. I use treats at the beginning stages. And "maybe" a new command. Good to finally be able to just reward w praise when they get older. Remember to get excited when praising. But don't praise too long. 2 to 3 seconds...now if it's a harder task your asking them with more distractions you could praise them just a tad bit more.. You can always go back to treats if the praise isn't reward enough for them. Just my 2 cents.

Wow this was an AWESOME vid! I have a tree walker coonhound + Boxer mix and when I tell you his nose is to the ground he doesn’t even know I exist! We live in an area with LOTS of wild life and he (Whiskey) is always trying to find something or chase the turkeys, rabbits, birds…everything…cant blame the dog its in his breed. Ive found that a good walk where he can just sniff and do his thing he listens sooo much better after that. Is that a thing? Anyway, The single pop of the collar has been pure gold. He’s listening so much better! Thank you for using a breed that could be distracted / high prey drive !!!🫶🏼 going to try phase 2 soon! I also bought a E-collar and will watch your other vid! Thanx again ❤

Amazing video Tom, love how you defined levels and demonstrating timing along with all the steps depending on the dogs response to your cues!! 🥳 One thing I had heard somewhere was that you want to avoid using obedience immediately when the dog gets to you while training recall because you want to make it very rewarding for them to get to you ASAP. I see you putting the dog into a sit, are you using that as the completion of the recall like they come to you and sit all when you say ? I'm gathering the sit helps the dog understand they are to come and not leave until released though. I love so many things about how you explained and put this video together. The progression explanations were great!

This was great information! We have been working so hard on all sorts of training with our boy. He has improved so much but our current battle is escaping. He listens so well on leash but has gotten out a few times and does not want to listen then. When would you recommend transitioning a puppy from a leash and collar to an ecollar or “shock” collar?
@mollytrudeau4189Ай бұрын
I missed the important part of the "extra consequence" you said you would come back to later in the video. Can you please point out at what point in the video you come back to that? We have a much-loved pointerdor who had a litter of 9 puppies 3 months ago. She was well-trained for many things as we had all worked with her, but come when called was never one we mastered. Now she pretty much makes it clear she doesn't think she has to do anything! so we are retraining, and I would like to have a solid come and stay.

question, is there a reason when she would come you would say "good" or "good job?" In your past videos you are so adamant about using the command in the praise "good come" I ask bc I use the command in the praise for all things but come. I think the main reason is because it sounds weird to me. As always you sir are the GOAT.
