Mr Hallinan, I simply cannot thank you enough for this upload. Somehow, in a 7 minute long video, you have provided more clarity on this issue than anybody else I have spoken to over the course of two years. Your last video on reconnecting with the right arch has already been a game changer for me. I suspected the issue was primarily a breathing one and you have nailed it. As I said, cannot thank you enough, your work here is nothing less than gold dust!
@NealHallinan5 жыл бұрын
you're quite welcome. I was pretty much explaining the "common" scenario. Unwinding all that right anterior neck musculature can be rather simple (right arch, right intercostal inhibition, left posterior ribcage inhibition, left pelvis strength) or quite complicated when teeth or vision are involved. Hopefully yours is more of the simple type. I would also add that once upper right chest wall expansion occurs (this would change all the PRI shoulder tests) you may need some "right low trap/right tricep" exercises that stabilize the scapula on the ribcage. The second video I uploaded today is an example of one.
@ASRmann5 жыл бұрын
The right low trap, right tricep is a movement I have already incorporated following advice of my PRI practitioner. However the missing link as you have explained here is the re-expansion of the right chest wall which in turn re-positions the scapula into the correct position thereby restoring proper movement and function. It makes perfect sense to me but has not been explained in simple language up until now. 🙏

Great material. I was wondering if you could do a video about shoulder mobility for swimmers. We need to be able to get to (or past) 180 deg. streamline position with arms overhead on our push offs to minimize drag forces. In butterfly it is desirable to be able to go past this, as the chest initiates downward motion while the arms are still over the head.

Eventhough through Petibon technique, my spine has straightened up some, i am still stuck in the left aic/ right bc pattern which is the underlying root cause. Checked on my right subclavius after watching your video and it couldnt be tighter. Great tip sir. Thanks a bunch!

Hi Neal,thanks for sharing 🙏🏻 I find it difficult to get neutral … I think the problem is my right chest wall who is really tight , and difficult to expand. The good thing is that i became aware of the situation.I fell the asymetry I also have weak left ab wall and flared left rib cage . I have winging and snapping left scapula !! I find it difficult to describe my ribs position…i think its complex and different from left to right Can i have an idea about ribs postion ? Thank you.

The right rib flare may just be an indication that you are strongly shifted to the right. That's just speculation. I can't say for sure.

I’ve been doing PRI for 3 years and just recently when to Lincoln, Nebraska and got my mouthguard and glasses. Still struggling to get my legs feeling even and I came across this video and found the right subclavius stuff very interesting. My right shoulder is higher than my left (opposite of what PRI typically expects) in Lincoln we just thought it was my right side not getting enough air but it’s been 4 months and my shoulders still are uneven and my right arm can’t swing back and only goes forward. Even with all the right side inhibition exercises I’ve been taught. Could a tight right subclavus be the issue? My right collar bone looks super “boney” and stick out a little more. Curious as to your opinion as I have a follow up telehealth and was going to reference this video and ask about manual subclavis techniques.
@NealHallinan Жыл бұрын
Right shoulders can end up higher for a number of reasons. It could be a subclavius. It can also be sensory. My right shoulder tends to hike higher when I have the wrong prescription. But in reality, it's not just the right shoulder being higher, something is pulling your right neck down at the same time. Necks are "sensory" structures, so that's why I always suspect sensory processing issues rather than breathing (especially if I've released the subclavius already)

Certainly possible. It's just one scenario, though. But a weak right low trap is the norm in any type of upper body patterning.

Neal, hope you don't mind me asking. With a bad AIC , should we address the mobility of a ribcage first and then pelvis? My bad AIC caused costochondritis and my intercostal muscles and lower ribcage still flare up. My facet joints are clicking on the right hand side so hopefully it is a sign of them being released and repositioning? I noticed in one of your videos that you stressed the importance of the ribcage mobility. Could it be something that can stop me from repositioning if the pelvis?
@NealHallinan5 жыл бұрын
That is a possibility, yes. Or it could keep you from staying re-positioned. The issue is this: if your ribcage can't expand efficiently, how will you get air "in". The left diaphragm relies on the expansion of the ribcage for it to do its work. If the ribcage can't expand, the left diaphragm can't pump. If this is the case, then the only way to get air will be by using your neck and lower back. This will throw you back into the a left AIC pattern. So yes, ribcage mobility is probably the most important thing we have going for us.
@ashleytaylor9942 жыл бұрын
Have you ever seen left AIC with a winged left scapula and protruding left clavicle? I know it is usally opposite but my left shoulder is compromised.

Yes. It could be a tight left pec pulling the left shoulder forward/internally.

What if the pain is on the left...left shoulder blade and left neck pain? Do I try and use the left diaphragm or still stick with focusing on the right?
@NealHallinan3 жыл бұрын
You are likely experiencing symptoms of prolonged compensation. The right side still needs to be inhibited.
@constantelevation58033 жыл бұрын
Thanks...I worked with a PRI therapist in Omaha for a couple of months. I was stuck in the left AIC pattern and was having horrible right SI joint and QL pain. I have gotten rid of the SI joint pain and have now developed left shoulder and neck pain, with a burning under the left shoulder blade. I moved out of state and can no longer see her in person, although we do email back and forth. Like you said I’m more than likely still compensating...I just wish I knew if I am performing the correct breathing technique in the correct way. This shoulder pain is killing me.

Hopefully the 4 PRI exercises on your website helps fix my right shoulder discomfort. My right shoulder has trouble extending ( swing back) during left stance (when left leg is on the ground). My pec minors get really tight and pull my shoulder forward and down. ( I also have forward head posture which doesn't help) hopefully more air gets into my right upper ribs :(

A shoulder can certainly look "smushed in" due to the way you are physically structured or tight pec/pec minor musculature.

Hi Neal, If this is the case, my case, can the pain be on the left? My pain is on the left, goes big time into my scapular. One pt said I have an elevated first rib on the left. My scalenes are taut, but my scm isn’t on the left. I have a slight head tilt to the right. My scm on the right is way thicker than the left and the scalenes are also taut. I haven’t any pain on the right. My shoulder on the right is more posterior and the left is more anterior. I kind of am a chest breather, trying very hard to correct. When I breath in, it is definitely felt more on the left. I cannot even feel it on the right. Does this make sense? Is this the pattern you are talking about? Thank you!
@NealHallinan4 жыл бұрын
L W yes, that is normal. The pain can show up anywhere. And the inability to fill the right chest wall is normal pattern also.
