Aside from the “best phone camera overall,” the person who voted could also get the “best phone camera for your eyes” from this test. Great great job MKBHD team!
@officialhideyo
@officialhideyo Жыл бұрын
But that doesn't make sense? The person who voted saw the image on the display of his pc or mobile? So it wouldn't be best phone camera for his eyes. It would be best phone camera for the display he voted it through.

flaws How about color accuracy? In those pictures I can see some colors look more kind of neon looking than others. This test is cool but some flaws. A person would have to be at the location to physically compare real colors with the photo colors. Also, you have people voting on more than likely incorrect display calibrations on various devices. So colors, brightness and sharpness can all be vastly different. It's better to get several people at a location to do this on correctly calibrated displays with the actual colors from the real life items to compare too.
@alvareo92
@alvareo92 Жыл бұрын
@@robertlawrence9000 The person's background also matters a lot. As a photographer, the first place for standard photos at 9:44 is a bit of an eyesore, unnatural look with too much highlight recovery on the window. We have gotten too used to HDR!

@@robertlawrence9000 calibration on devices has gotten to a point where unless you are a professional or have bought a device with a really crappy display, it won't matter as much; nowadays it isn't rare to find budget monitors having a delta less than 2, and 90-something coverage of sRGB which is huge. Of course, it isn't perfect by any means but this test is leagues ahead of any other review in other channels as camera comparison it goes.

Dude! You just solved one of my biggest gripes with these sorts of comparison videos. The methodology here is actually statistically/scientifically sound for once. Any other way of doing comparisons is deeply flawed. You basically eliminated statistical error by doing it this way, and that's actually very innovative for this format. You're the man, Marques! Always finding ways to make major improvements and create the best content. You're a huge inspiration, and you've more than earned your place at the top.
@danishblunt9698
@danishblunt9698 Жыл бұрын
Its still flawed. There is still no way of viewing the original resolution of the images. Tons of images will look way worse when you view them on different media.
@NautilusGuitars
@NautilusGuitars Жыл бұрын
@@danishblunt9698 Sure, but it's about as good as you can get in this format, and the conversion needed to show them is necessary anyway. What I mean is that this is almost exclusively how people view photos taken on a phone, and with the vast amount of views the color/resolution error between viewing platforms is smoothed out to a nice average of how they actually appear to people. This isn't a comparison about how well phone photos will print for a gallery. It's a perfect representation of the vast majority of their use cases, being online viewing.
@danishblunt9698
@danishblunt9698 Жыл бұрын
@@NautilusGuitars Quite wrong, it can be improved by adding a "view original resolution" also then by uploading said images on various platforms to account for platform specific compression. not only that but there is only 1 picture taken per phone which again is a problem as each phone processes images very different based on situation. The current format is absolute barebones at best and is hardly an upgrade over previous methologies used.
@NautilusGuitars
@NautilusGuitars Жыл бұрын
@@danishblunt9698 Ok, first of all, you completely misinterpreted my initial point and went on an entirely different subject. I entertained it for the sake of argument, but you're adding way too much weight to this one specific, and quite unimportant, factor. As for my initial point, it was that the _methodology_ was sound. Not the means, the methodology. Meaning, the way in which the test were _executed_ instead of the means by which they were. Regardless of your opinion on the means of displaying the photos, the way in which the test was organized is sound, as there is a one-to-one comparison between each photo, allowing an equally weighted average score to each. there also wasn't "1 picture taken per phone". Did you even watch the video? There were three significantly different photos per phone. As for resolution, this is a nearly insignificant factor. Any photographer, such as myself, will tell you that resolution is quite unimportant for anything but large format prints and displays. Even then, we're rarely using the full resolution of even a low megapixel photo. Color, sharpness, separation, lens characteristics and distortion correction, histogram, noise, etc are far more important. All of these things are baked into a phones jpeg file. The vast majority of displays will reproduce these qualities faithfully enough for very low error results. All phones use sRGB. All displays use sRBG. Nothing inherent about the photos will be altered by having the resolution changed. Resolution/size is _not_ what determines the quality of a photo. The vast majority of people voting in this test wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between full or lowered resolution versions of these photos on the displays they're viewing them on. And again, none of the qualities that are important would be effected if they could. a 32mp photo with clipped blacks/highlights and bad color will always look worse than a 10mp photo with a good histogram and good color.
@danishblunt9698
@danishblunt9698 Жыл бұрын
@@NautilusGuitars You went defensive quite quick. What you're trying to do now is to somehow talk yourself out of it. Displaying the pictures in certain ways, multiple images taken and different converted images are still part of the methology. You're just trying to redefine at this point and honestly, you look silly in your attempt.

As a photography enthusiast, I noticed that the Sony performs how I would expect a prosumer camera to perform. The colours were neutral, exposures were pretty spot on in preserving highlights/shadows with no artificial bokeh or dramatic HDR. This means DI workflow might be similar to an A7/R/S camera for e.g. and if really needed I think a photog won't mind mixing a few snaps from the Xperia and the main cam since they are harmonious. @@HueyMataruse yeah, and I just tried the survey myself. I'm not convinced that it was so useful. I want to see the images ranked results side by side like in the video, but at full size. So many images to vote for, by the end I was just starting to vote on which one was brighter (but not overexposed or weirdly colored, saturated) because the majority of the photos seemed to pit one phone against the absolute worst contender. so forget trying to analyze the photos for sharpness and so forth. my worst contender tried 19 times to win. the best won participated in only 10 attempts. Eh, this type of study is also bias, and if anything, it's designed to reflect people bias tendency in a spesific use case (aka a quick post on social media, with no edit) It is useful for sure but arguably more for the smartphone manufacturerers rather than the end user (because while it reflect the overall user bias, it does not nessarily reflect your own bias which is all the matters.) If anything a traditional camera review, and especially a technical review, is more useful in that regard. Because it shows exactly what the phone is capable of, and you are the judge of whether that's important to your use case or not.

@@Variable_Degree_Series Speaking as a 8 year long Android user, I've done bunch of night photography (which I prefer btw.) and bunch of astrophotography on multiple Android devices. Not going to explain myself further, my opinion remains unchanged. If you want to take photos all day, buy yourself a pro camera, use Pro mode and adjust EV, white balance, exposure etc. to your liking. When it comes to phones, 95% of the users are taking pictures by snapping them right out of the pocket without any additional settings or pro mode and those pictures look alike in most of the flagship phones today. Pixel has cool features for phone photography, no questions there. But, if you have 2-3 hours less time every day to take them, due to it's battery, it's not really a full enjoyment. Pixel's battery drainage compared to 14 Pro Max is something that needs to be improved with 8 Pro eventually. No one wants to go out for a day trip and run out battery at 7PM. One of the things I'm still not willing to switch to Pixel. But, that's just me maybe.

Would have been nice if you shot stills on a popular full frame camera just to compare against. Like... In these photos what's genuinely your skin supposed to look like? I noticed that your skin tones would change dramatically depending on what camera you used and a control photo would've made it even better to compare with.

totally agree this is very important, right now we dont even know whats real. as the saying goes, reality is often disappointing and i guess the phone that can fool you best into thinking it got a good realistic photo would win

The video of him presenting is a good baseline to compare the photos against. I'm sure he's using a high end camera, white balance, etc. all in check.

It would be interesting, but not necessarily comparable, because one of the points of the test is to show the default mode of phone cameras which almost all apply heavy post processing. It's one of the reasons the sony experia did poorly. Is because it is essentially a real camera, it doesn't over process, therefore is makes great photos to improve in lightroom, but wouldn't normally be immediately posted to social media.
@tubester358

Use his videos as a reference, he tries to make the videos as accurate as possible to present the products as accurately as possible. The point of these tests isn't to figure out which camera is objectively the best or most accurate, it's to measure people's personal preference and then average that out. It doesn't matter if a pro explains to you that x photo is better than y if you personally prefer y and want to have that for personal photos.

Awesome Video and testing. But still i want to critique 2 things: I know its hard to do so, but the camera angle sometimes was different and this changed how the photos turned out. It changed to composition. Would be cool if you could think of a way to eliminate that. Second, and i think you could fix this easily, please show us more data in the video or make it available somewhere else. Like actual numbers. Saying "this phone absolutely crushed this category" isn't the same as telling us by how many percent. Also showing thr numbers on screen is extremely helpful for people who either want to memorize the content and or for people who arent that sure in the english language. Anyway keep going and, have a nice day
@_Rafiki.

I think angles were slightly different because of 1. Default focal length as mentioned in the video + 2., The side of the phone the camera is. (I think size of phone might come into play here too as all phone will have been placed on the same stand)

The voting this year is nuts. You really can't tell which phone is which and no comments to tell which photo is their choice. It really is a very intricate and detail voting experience. I've never done this kind of voting before so it was a first experience. Hopefully we get more of these in the next smartphone comparison.

Would you consider adding a selfie category for next time? Could even b a whole new test with same/similar categories, but for front cams this time. It might b relevant to many, given the environment we live in 4 quite some time now. Great job, btw

This method is way better than the bracket style of previous years. Takes more time for the users, but you get way higher quality results. It'd also be interesting to see how these compare in a blind to a mid-tier DSLR or mirrorless.

The photos are too differently framed, though - and since they have human subjects, there's bound to be some subtle differences in pose and facial expressions as well. The framing probably also affected the white balance.
