The best snorkeling at Lawa'i Beach on the south side of Kauai, Hawaii

www.jordanouts... Lawa'i Beach is a small beach located on the south side of Kauai that has great snorkeling. This beach has free street side parking and a public bathroom. As you enter the beach, the far right side of the beach is the best place to enter for snorkeling. There were still a lot of rocks in the water, so it's best to lay down in the water as soon as you can and swim out instead of walking out. We saw turtles, eels, and all sorts of fish. This beach also has really soft sand and was a great place to hang out and relax.

My husband and i have snorkeled here several times. It's a relatively small area, and there was little, if any coral, but there are LOTS of fish. The fish appear to be used to a lot of people in the water, so you may be able to get closer to them here than you would at other places. In terms of fish life per area, this is a place where you get a lot of beauty and variety ("bang for your buck" is an American expression I'd use to describe it, but it's free). The restaurant on the left as you face the ocean (Beach House) has wonderful food. I don't know if they still do this, but there was a flock of small parrots (possibly rose-ringed parakeets, my memory isn't great) that used to roost around the restaurant around sunset. The locals weren't happy about them. I guess it was their equivalent of pigeons that are common in mainland US cities.

what are you using to video under water? also I have never snorkeled, any recommendations for snorkel gear for a beginner? thanks

I'm using a GoPro Hero 11 to film underwater. You can go to to Amazon and get a snorkeling set with a mask, snorkel, and fins for about $35 to $40. If you're just starting out you don't need to get anything expensive. See if you like it first. Have a great time!
