I'm not being picky here, as I LOVE your content, but I would add that another major reason why the Beatles masters sound so good is because they took great care in storing them. As documented in the COmplete Beatles Recoding Sessions, they used air conditioned rooms and sealed bags for them.

When I first heard The Beatles' German recordings with Tony Sheridan in the 1970s, I was instantly mesmerized by the bass sound in Cry For A Shadow! Thank you for the detailed information on the location of the microphones and the tape recorder used. It really couldn't have been better. And it was a great inspiration for my own studio work, so I made recordings with natural acoustics in different spaces, also with my own band.

I've never seen it mentioned anywhere, but I'm not sure Paul is playing his violin bass on that session. It sounds like a long-scale to me. Notice how low he plays down the neck without it going out of tune. That begs the question of if it isn't the Hofner, whose bass is he playing? Did he restring Stuart's President, or did he manage to borrow a left-handed bass for the recording?

I was going to comment the same thing. I love bass in my system, but I had to back it off a bit when "Cry For a Shadow" came on. Amazing!

Strange that the 1979 UK LP of Hey Jude used Capitol's copy tape as its master as the UK cassette (TC-PCS 7184) absolutely sparkles with plenty of punch and must surely come from UK master for CPCS106. It seems they repeated the mistake of Magical Mystery Tour yet again. In fact I've often meant to say - it's telling that all these master tape boxes, detailing as they do every date on which the tapes were withdrawn from the library for vinyl mastering - the notes never mention any use of those tapes for cassette or other tape format mastering/duplication - my theory being that that was always the first use of safety copies or a specific copy being made in parallel with the safety copy. When musicassette production started in the UK August 1966 (for October release) in Philips' Walthamstow factory (which handled EMI's cassettes aswell as those of all other UK record labels at the time), the duplication masters were 4-track tapes (Sides A and B in opposite directions) running at 15ips but recorded at 3 3/4ips (twice cassette running speed, sped up 4x) and the cassette slave recorders running at 8x normal speed. It would be interesting to know if Philips produced those duplication masters, or whether they were produced by the individual record companies' studios, submitted to Philips according to a specification they had provided for the duplication service.

Young Master Andrew,well having your fresh "you," in New Year is nice. Many of those records that you talked about i have,as i " told," many times all German pressings but from 1980's. Now days i bought many former Yugoslavia pressings,but still hasn' t got time to listen to it. That music from tapes sounds the best,i know for sure,was 15. years in music studio at recordings i asked for " raw," material but copyrights stood in my way. After mastering usually it sounds completly different. Learned a lot Cheers!

Hi Andrew, really good informative video again as always. I love watching your videos and it never ceases to amaze me how much you know about the Beatles. Been looking forward to this video and I can't wait to see your top 5 selections in part 2. Just one question regarding the red album (The Beatles 1962-1966). If memory serves me well I understand the US version of the album has a James Bond intro on record 1 at the start of side 2 before the song 'Help!' and I'm curious to know where they got that from and why it was omitted from the UK pressing of the album. I'd love to know. Thanks for another fab video Andrew, can't wait for part 2.

The help album that has a James Bond enter originally was from the capital records are called help produced by none other than and compiled by the presidential capital records at that time I believe Dave Dexter Junior Dave Dexter was a man who did not like rock ‘n’ roll he was into other types of music including gas. The James Bond and grill also appears at the beginning of the movie as well On the Beatles help soundtrack The music from our past seven songs and in between those who have instrumental tracks from the movie while the UK version has the regular songs from the help soundtrack on side one then the non-album soundtrack songs on side to of helped, but that is a good question I’m not sure why the UK omitted that on the red album but I think I love both versions it’s a great song.

Great video Andrew. I did a comparison of The Ballad Of John & Yoko and Old Brown Shoe on the export LP of Hey Jude (CPCS 106) and the 1U/1U UK single. Tonally those two songs did not tonally match. The LP cuts sound softer and lack some of sparkle found on the UK 45. Now the German 072 pressing came quite a bit closer to my ears. Look forward to next weeks part 2 video. Happy New Year!

Hi Andrew, Another gem. I purchased a South African copy of Hey Jude (Parlophone PCSJ 149) in James Asman's record store in Cannon Street, London in 1970 which I thought sounded pretty incredible at the time even though Paperback Writer's stereo image was reversed. I am also surprised that the original versions of Skinny Minnie and Sweet Georgia Brown (from the Ya Ya EP) have never been reissued. Subsequent Polydor recordings of SGB have all featured Tony Sheridan's "Topical" lyrics. Looking forward to Part 2.

The eighties mastered Canadian "Twist & Shout" LP has PPM tracks with very good sound. A/B tested it with the mono box set and it compared nicely. Actually, if you like vocals on the bright & clear side, it would top the mono on the tracks in actual stereo. Depressingly, although it says stereo on the label, it's mostly decent mono.

Funny how everyone mentions that the sound had to be modified for vinyl because of its limitations and yet a well made early pressing all analog record still is so much more enjoyable than the digital garbage that is released today. Sort of the difference between watching a vintage movie and an overly doctored computer graphic mess.

Turns out it's actually pressed in Holland.. Whoops! 🤦🏻‍♂️ Haven't heard it yet, but I sure hope it sounds as good as the recommended German pressing & didn't waste my time. 🤞😬 If anybody can weigh in on how they compare, please let me know! 🙏 Anyways, looking forward to Part II - Cheers!

Oh you’ve done it again! 👍! I’ve always believed an LP sounds as good as your playback equipment and your room; the size of your listening space. I have listened to those LP’s you’ve selected on the most expensive equipment in the world…but if the room wasn’t appropriate certain frequencies overtook the space and really distorted what was on wax. That being said…so far I agree with 98% of what you presented! Maybe next week will fill in the gaps! Can’t wait! Well done and very important to collectors of their music. Thanks again for keeping it informational and fun! 👍👍! Happy 2022 to you as well!

Hope this is a good place to ask this question. When the British Beatles albums were released on CD in the United States in 1987, I couldn't afford CDs at the time, but I could afford LPs. Another fine video, Andrew. As far as I recall, the U.S. Hey Jude or The Beatles Again LP was released in February, 1970. I had at the time, just inherited my uncle's stereo. The Hey Jude album sounded infinitely better than all the Capital albums at the time. I had read that EMI compiled the master tape for it utilizing the original U.K. master tapes. At the time, it was a real eye and ear opener. My Capital albums sounded far less vibrant in comparison. Cheers and Happy New Year!

Great video. How can one tell pressings of 62-66 and 67-70 issued after the oil crisis? I disagree that the Beatles music was recorded on the best equipment in the best studios of the day. EMI's studio at Abbey Road, where the vast bulk of the music was recorded, did not have the best equipment in the world, far from it. Studios in the United States, especially in New York City and Los Angeles, had far better equipment. As you note, the German Polydor recordings were made with better equipment. The first four Beatles albums were recorded on two-track machines. They didn't get 8-track until Abbey Road.

Really good and nice video as always! For me, sound quality isn’t really a big priority (I jump for the more rare stuff (though some rare pressings are the best sounding)), it’s more of a bonus. Heck, sometimes I love putting on records of lesser quality because sometimes good sound isn’t always the best sound. It depends on my mood! The Norwegian pressings of albums and singles tend to hold up in sound quality, because they often used imported stampers from the uk (that’s what I’ve heard at least). And to add to that: they did not make many copies of the majority of Beatles albums/singles, so you don’t really need to hassle to find an “early” copy. But, on some records they must have used their own cut, because they sometimes does not sound so good (I’m not talking about the condition of my record). Something / Come Together stands out as a single that really does not sound too good (I’m talking about the Norwegian press)… does the same apply to the original UK single press?

One comment and one puzzled question: 2/2. Puzzled question: I've been doing some research on the Hamburg recordings and I'm quite puzzled by the information you provide around 6:50 and onwards. It is still not quite clear if one (Georgia Brown) or more of the 8 Beatles contributions were recorded on a second occasion after June 22 or at a different location, but I take it from the only interview with the sound engineer of the original recordings that the recording was in true stereo with supportive microphone(s). He was not too clear about it (he was in his eighties) and the occasion was a run-of-the-mill recording then with nothing to predict the immense interest it elicited years later. Still, the recordings seem to bear out what he says. The Hamburg recordings are the only true stereo recordings the Beatles ever made. Would you tell me what your source is for the 'five Neumann U 47 microphones' plus a drum microphone (7:35)? That would be six channels mixed down to two tracks, but mixing consoles at the time did not allow continuous panning (caveat: I don't know what type of console Kaempfert used at the time). Mic leakage does not account for the continuous stereo image you find on the record. There was leakage on the first EMI recordings, artificially enhanced for the stereo version, on the first two albums, and still the channels are very distinctly left and right with an annoying hole in the middle. For further comparison: the Beatles used 8-track tape from the White Album onwards, and that entails the use of a minimum of 8 microphones or other inputs (many more actually, due to the combination of preliminary tracks during overdubbing), all mixed down to the final 2 stereo channels. And you still have gaps in the stereo image and sounds that are exclusively far right or far left. In Hamburg, all sources were mixed to both channels simultaneously, and the mono versions seem to be straight fold-downs. Any comment would be appreciated!

@@Parlogram Ah, thank you! Seems I will have to get that book, too. (Funds are limited, though ... tough times for fans right now!) I still wonder where Thorsten Knublauch got that information. He did a lot of research, no doubt. But all the main people are no longer with us, and Paul and Pete can be forgiven for having only the faintest memories (and they were not consistent anyway). I still believe the recordings were made with a stereo pair plus supporting microphones; you don't get that soundscape on two channels in any other way I can think of. Other sources are less precise, even Lewisohn (who took some information from Knublauch). I will have to leave that in the 'to-do'-tray for now. BTW, the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Hamburg-Harburg was not a sports hall. I hope the book didn't say that! It was a musical and theatrical venue that doubled as the assembly hall for the adjacent school. (A fairly common kind of multi-purpose hall in Germany.) Quite a few recordings were made there, music as well as poetry readings and the like. Looking forward to part II!

My top 10 favorite Beatles albums are the Beatles number one red and blue albums 1962 to 1966 1967 to 1970 because those are great Beatles compilation album they’re fantastic Number two would be the past masters volume one and two because you get all the Beatles singles that weren’t on albums in the UK.And another great album I really love on the final is on the Beatles love album even though it was released in 2006 but there is a final copy which is good as all the mash ups and remixes. I’ve been number three number four would be probably my all-time favorite Beatles albums light album I love it because it’s got so much music on it. And there’s one of my dear love on vinyl number four would have to be live at the star club and double album released in Germany even though the Beatles dismissed the recordings because they sounded so poor but I think it’s the Beatles live at their test as well as live at the Hollywood bowl I haven’t heard the final version I have a CD version of it. Number five is going to be for me the Beatles magical mystery tour it’s a fantastic album from beginning to end all the way through and now it’s part of the Beatles canon which is great. I even love the number for Beatles albums which would have to be meet the Beatles and I also love with the Beatles as well because they have different tracklist things which are great I especially love the fact that Capitol decided to use I wanna hold your hand and I saw her standing there to kick off the album. That was of the number five and number six respectively. Number seven is probably going to be for me the Beatles revolver number eight would be rubber soul number nine would probably be the Polydor recordings that sound really good. And probably number 10 my next album would actually beThe please please mail them because that was the first album I ever bought and that was on TV I didn’t buy any Beatles albums on vinyl until Sergeant Pepper that was my very first vinyl of any Beatles album and I think that would be number seven is a fantastic album one of the things I did not like was capital decided not to use the inner group gibberish but I think that’s what makes that album so charming and weird and other guard. Of course I love every single Beatles album it’s hard for me to pick which is my favorite because I love them all same thing with songs.

Re: The "1962-1966" and "1967-1970" 2014 issues. I have both in shrink and on the back cover it states "Printed in the EU". I'm in Canada and was verifying that I indeed have a European copy and not a Canadian copy. There is no manufacturing details on the inners nor on the Apple labels. Happy New Year, Andrew! I wished you would be in command of the Beatles releases. Thank you for sharing your amazing knowledge with us! I collected my first Beatles albums in the seventies, mostly German pressings. Thank God I still have them, they sound better than the re-issues (apart from the mono vinyls perhaps). I have the Hey Jude album as a German pressing (1 C 062-04 348). Do you think it sounds as good as the original British pressing? Greetings from Berlin, Harry P.S. Discogs answered my question for me: "Because it's not mentioned anywhere on the sleeve, it is not widely known (both domestically and internationally) that the Australian version of Hey Jude actually originates from the same lacquer from which UK 'Export' copies originate."

Have you done or have you considered going through each Beatles canon album and deciding the best mix or format for each album individually? I remember you doing this with the cassettes and CDs picking the best releases, but I assume it would take a lot of time to invest in each album and decide the best mix or format for each one. Like imagine a big Battle Royale, listening to every country's and every label's release of "Please, Please Me" to find out which format and mix gives the best bang for your buck.

@@strangescottvoiceacting5351 Absolutely. Though one can limit himself to one medium, but would need to count in different cuts for each country. Plus, there is a question of personal taste. Hi Andrew! Good to know I own all of these except the Love Me Do single, and the Please Please Me record. One day, right? I wanted to ask, I want to pick up a 1977 repress of Exile on Main Street, since original 72 “artisan” stamped pressings are hard to find in good shape. I found a ‘77 repress with the artisan stamp, but I’m worried about the result. In this video you talked about the red and blue album, and how the original ‘73 is superior to subsequent post-oil crisis pressings. I’m worried that the ‘77 pressing of Exile will sound crummy, even with the great sounding “Artisan” stampers. The condition is VG++, so would it be a good idea to pick it up? Or avoid it due to it being a post-oil crisis record? This question also applies for lots of other titles such as Physical Graffiti and even ‘78-‘80 repressings of Abbey Road/Let It Be
@Donjasoni
@Donjasoni 2 жыл бұрын
I think some of the reissues of exile using the original stampers were still good. I have several Exile’s and a few are artisans which sound great. I haven’t compared late 70s residues with them but I’ve read that they are still pretty solid.

One comment and one puzzled question: 1/2. Comment first. Happy New Year even before that! I'm glad you put 'Love Me Do' in the list. In Germany, the single was released in 1963 together with 'Please Please Me', and it was the Ringo version. (The same combination, with English catalogue numbers as matrices, came out in the Netherlands and in Sweden.) Some sources say this issue was a needle drop as the original tape was not available (as was apparently the case for the first release in Canada) and that it was replaced by a version from tape later on, but as a matter of fact there is only one matrix before a much later re-release (with Andy white, combined with 'P.S. I Love You', as on the original single). The original German issue is such an improvement over any later issues that I'm convinced that the same tape was used as on the Parlophone single. Maybe a copy, but still... I don't have the red label UK original, so I can't say if that is even better, but I agree that the Ringo version in its single incarnation is a revelation. Thank you!.

Hi, Andrew--as always, a greatly entertaining vid--I gotta inquire, though, about the tape difference on Hey Jude between the domestic UK and export--both have the reversed channels of Paperback Writer, so doesn't that indicate that both the PCS and CPCS lp's used Capitol's master? They sound the same to me in terms of sound quality (and certainly both better than US mastering), despite different matrices.
