A tip that has helped my wife and I we have 3 kids and both have companion pass is if you change your payment date to 26th of month the statement closing date will be 1st of the month. We do this in Dec just to make sure the sw points won’t post in the wrong year. Also we tend to close the sw cards after the year and leave 1 open between us for referral points we are > 5 years with double companion pass.

I earned companion pass with just the personal card with an elevated SUB. Book a few flights and pay with the card for extra points, plus the miles you earn once you fly. Also, I booked a couple of hotels on SW Hotels with bonus points offered. My point is, it’s not hard to do this with just a single card. Great video.

That’s awesome!! It all depends on the offers out there and your spending habits, but a lot of times you can only get it for a year with the promos, so the 2 card approach is a safe approach. Thanks for watching Ty!

So, I did this in 2023. I got a business card and personal card. Qualified for the companion pass in feb 2023. It has now expired as i did not reach the 135000 in 2024. Can I re-qualify by getting 2 new cards....If so, do I need to cancel my current cards. I know if I have a partner it makes sense for them to do the same process...but I am asking specifically if I can re-qualify if I get 2 cards, and if so what do I need to ensure to get re-qualified (i.e. do I need to cancel cards, how long before I re-apply, etc)

two companion pass questions I didn't hear answered in the video...how many times can you use the companion pass in a year? do you have to name who is on the companion pass and keep it as that person? Or can you use it with different friends throughout the year?

In response to your questions... 1) you can use your companion pass unlimited times while you hold it! Amazing value! 2) you do have to name your current companion and... 3) you can change your companion up to 3 times per year...this is done by calling SW customer service...you can even change from say your mom to your dad and then back to your mom. This is my next goal - I am ineligible due to 5/24, but my husband is currently at 3/24. We do have some big spend coming up, so I’m just debating between 2 biz cards or 1 personal & 1 biz. I think cardholders can change who their companion is once per year, if I’m not mistaken.

If you get a personal card now, and the business card in 31 days, then hit the spend requirement for both after Jan 1st, the bonuses will count toward 2025? What about the spend that was done in November-December 2024? I’m assuming those wouldn’t count. Also, isn’t Southwest going to revamp everything pretty soon? And why not wait for a companion pass elevated offer?

The spend that was done in 2024 won't count towards the 2025 and 2026 Companion Pass. That's why you want the welcome offers posting after the New Year. You cold always wait for a Companion Pass elevated offer, but those only generally give you Companion Pass for a max of 1 year which isn't the route I'll be going for personally. Also, there's no way to guarantee that we'll get those offers at an opportune time. The revamps are not supposed to impact the Companion Pass based on current reports, but that could always change, we'll see! No matter what, walking away with 130k Southwest miles and Companion Pass for 2 years is a plus in my book.

If you already have the Plus personal card, would the plan be to cancel it and then apply for the Priority personal to get the bonus? I got the plus 2+ years ago.

If you’re wanting to implement this exact strategy you’d either need 2 business cards or 1 business and 1 personal. If you want to go the personal route you’ll need to cancel your current one to get a bonus on a new one based on their application rules.

Wouldn’t earning UR/MR’s be more valuable in this case especially if you are going to take a 5/24 slot with the strategy? Realistically how many flights would you say you need to take to make a CP worth it?

It's less about the points earned than it is the BOGO flights. To sacrifice a single 5/24 slot (or none at all if you go the 2 business card route) for BOGO flights for 2 years is a no-brainer to me. Say you even travel 5 times a year with a companion, that's at least 125k points saved if you value the flights at just 25k points. Plus you get 130k points for the welcome offers and all the benefits with the cards, so you're really in the positive at least 255k points just by getting these 2 cards. If you're an infrequent Southwest flyer, a different approach like earning more UR points may be better though.

So if earned the CP in Feb 2024 with a SW personal card offer (till 2/28/25), can I earn another CP in 2025 with 2 business cards in 2025? I was just approved for SW performance on 11/2/24 and I was planning on applying for the SW premier business. I currently have 70k of the 135k CP point requirement. Is my strategy feasible?

Yes you should be able to no problem! As long as both offers are hit after the start of the new year, you'll meet the 130k point requirement and lock in the CP for the rest of 025 and 2026. What I'm not 100% sure about is how it'll work if you hit the offers before your current CP expires. I assume it won't mess anything up and you'll still earn the CP for the rest of 2025 and 2026, but I don't know for sure. That could be worth a call to SW about.
