The only thing weirder than having my own S.T.A.L.K.E.R. moments and feeling how special the games turned out to be was finding out how effectively the game did the same magic for others. In addition to being a triumph in so many ways, the game also managed to get a pass for a lot of its bugs and flaws, at least from me. It was overly ambitious and very buggy and held together by amateur patches, but that somehow made the game more complete, and expressed the game's themes even better. Magic indeed!

I started playing this a few days ago... not sure if it was a terrible mistake. It's all I want to play now, and it's making me realise how the gaming industry stagnated. The AI, the atmosphere, the steady progression and rewarding, customiseable challenge, the sheer intensity of the firefights and the creepiness of the quiet moments... And damn, the sheer size of the world. I'm many hours in, I have a decent supply of ammo and about 50,000 in the bank, I've killed over a hundred other stalkers and over a hundred mutants, I've fought poltergeists and chimeras and mercenaries and zombies... ...and I haven't gone north of Yantar yet. I've seen maybe 4-5 zones. A tiny percentage of the game world. It's the Stalker that the original release always deserved to be.

OG stalker had some massive CLUNK in every aspect, it put me off despite the general idea being one I love. This one seems to clean up a lot of that. Damn it's getting tempting to try out.

@@IRMentat It does, and it really is the Stalker experience Stalker always strived to be. Everything feels more complete and coherent now - with less focus on a clunky story, and more focus on the setting, the world, and the player freedom. The gunplay is lethal and violent, but reasonable - the new sound effects mean that you know when someone is shooting at you, because you'll hear the telltale CRACK of a bullet impacting nearby, and enemies actually navigate based on reasonable senses - if you fire a shot in one location, then relocate without them seeing you, you'll be able to flank as they converge on where you used to be. The progression is stead but rewarding; you'll start off feeling like an utter pauper... but if you're careful and cunning, you can go anywhere, do anything. Get yourself a silenced pistol, and you can take out a team of well-armed mercenaries with a bit of care - aided by the fact that you can crawl under things, or squeeze between things. That being said, it is quite hardcore - personally I've changed some of the progression settings so that (for example) the weapons enemies drop are actually functional instead of inexplicably disintegrating the moment they're dropped. But that's the great thing about the Gamma pack - it's heavily customisable, both through enabling/disabling mods, and through in-game settings. Here's a little experience that sums up how great it is to play though: On my way back from a mission, heading back to a largely "easy" area, the lowest level area in the game, I encounter some zombies. I take them out... a mutant cat attacks, I kill it but I'm bleeding, so I bandage up... ...suddenly, the crows start calling, and a siren sounds - a zone blowout is about to start, blasting the landscape with hellish waves of radiation. So half-wounded, I hurry to the nearest shelter. I get to the camp fire inside the ruined building... only to see three bandits entering from the opposite door; a tense close-quarters firefight ensues, as both parties are desperate to not be outside in the storm, but desperate to not get shot. All of this was totally dynamic, but this kind of scenario happens all the time, naturally unfolding as the other humans and mutants wander around.

@@NicholasBrakespear At the same time, I only played SoC a few years ago and when I play stuff like this I sort of miss that old horrible pistol. It's the Stalker equivalent of the first dagger in Morrowind. It kinda seems like SoC was trying to simulate how much most people suck at aiming. Get in a stable position, give your character a moment to align the sights properly, *then* shoot and hope the bulletproof arms of Stalker NPCs don't screw you over. It led to this weird playstyle that felt half sim-ish, half "actually I'll just sprint up behind them and drop a grenade at their feet, less risky".

@@colbyboucher6391 Yeah, it definitely rewarded embracing the jank and cheesing as hard as you could possibly cheese. In the case of Gamma, I think it has successfully transmuted "jank and cheese" into "hardcore and devious" - you still won't kill a random dude by shooting him in the arm... but if you're using armor piercing rounds, you'll make him bleed, and he may actually collapse on the floor, or take a moment to heal himself. Or another trick I like - mutants getting in your way? Don't have the ammo to deal with them? Recreate that Reaver battle from Serenity - run like a madman towards the nearest group of human enemies, and wait for the gunfire to erupt. Ironically, explosives are no longer as easy to cheese. My experiences with them in Gamma can be summed up as: I tried to place a proximity mine I'd found while being chased by mercenaries. I placed it on a slope... and ran down the slope... it rolled down the slope and blew my legs off. Then I tried to throw a grenade at one of those psychic dwarf things - almost as soon as I'd pulled the pin, he threw it back at me.

Just wanted to say thanks for making an extra long vid covering this mod, and going into some extra details on gun repair etc. Made it much easier to dive into. It's also worth mentioning, the install does NOT require having any of the Stalker games installed on your PC first, all the files you need are downloaded part of the mod. *However* can take about 6ish+ hours to download, unpack, and run the requisite .exe's to get everything fully installed and ready to play, so make sure to set aside a full afternoon/evening to get the install sorted.

Apparently there is a setting in the mod launcher somewhere that says something like "if you have still have stutter & FPS issues after making the usual adjustments check this box" - I saw it on a video of drewski, bluedrake or one of those guys and it worked for them haha

I think that and the 'disable core 0 for the game' steps are for a sort of constant hitching stuttering- but not sure. What I had was occational stuttering in certain spots only looking certain directions - and neither those fixes helped- but I lowered a few settings and that did it. It might of been volumetric smoke or maybe light draw distance. Just to let people know if they get infrequent stuttering that the suggested steps dont fix, try turning a few settings off/down and see if anything helps - it did for me.

@@elevown Only noticable stuttering I've had with the GAMMA was when I was in Truck Cemetery, for some reason the game completely shit itself near the bandit encampment. Not sure why or if it would do it at that spot again but going away from that specific area solved it. Also Duty base in the mornings chunks down from about 140fps to about 50 but I've just learned to live with that specific zone being chonky at certain times. Overall the pack is very stable and performs well from my experience.

Note that instead of using a repair kit to outright replace parts, you can also fix dirty parts (condition 60 and above) and swap those in. You can buy 100% parts from the technicians or you can salvage parts as we already saw Splatt do in his video to get working parts. You don't even need a toolkit for most of that, only swapping the barrel requires a toolkit. So if you find a gun with a barrel condition 60% or above, you can field strip it and replace the broken bits with working ones (after you repair them as close to 100% as you can of course). You can clean a dirty barrel through the same 'maintain parts' menu, but you only need cleaning supplies to clean a barrel.

There is an optional mod that makes people angry when you loot what they killed. I also like adding Mags Redux, which obviously adds magazines. Like you said, there is a way to customize pretty much everything.

Love Mags Redux. Made me change my way of play, instead of just carrying hundreds of rounds of ammo and reloading after every shot, I now bring 6 mags for my main rifle and 4 for my sidearm. Running low on ammo and having to manually load a mag in between firefights is tense.

Just a thought: The Azazel mode is probably a reference to the entity in the Danzel Washington movie called, "Fallen". (In fact, Azazel is a demon in ancient Jewish religion, I believe.) The entity, ancient and malevolent, is able to "jump" into different people in the movie and take them over. It's not much different than the way the Agents in The Matrix work. If you ever get the chance, give "Fallen" a try; it's a great movie. And thanks for the review. I always enjoy watching your playthroughs; you're quit entertaining, my man ;)

Important note. Anomaly doesnt completely rip out the story, It changes it to some degree and some of the cutscenes are not there but if you follow Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl's story You kind of get something like the origional story. I do strongly recommend Anomaly as a whole for anyone who wants to get into Stalker. its enviorment is immersive like nothing out there and you can mod it. And its FREE

A couple things to mention. There's actually 2 additional factions that are unlocked by playing through the Loner (other factions can do them as well but Loner is easiest) main story missions, the cultist group Sin and the UNISG (United Nations International Scientist Group I think...). Main story missions are yellow in the PDA and have you following in the footsteps of Strelok, the main character from the original STALKER games. Every ambient noise heard in the zones is real, from the gunfire to the growling of mutants it is actually something happening somewhere in the region. If you hear birds fluttering and cawing in this pack, run. The weather is about to turn very, very bad. The AI in this game is unbelievably smart. We're talking "I heard you start reloading so I'm going to charge you" or "My buddy has you distracted so I'm going to sneak up behind you" smart. I've had random stalkers sneak up behind me in an attempt to ambush me just out in a field. Something to help out with income. Mutant parts and artifacts will sell for higher to specific vendors. Hunter in the Train Depot in Garbage will buy mutant parts for more, and I believe the Ecologists in either Zaton or Yantar will buy them and artifacts for the highest prices. 42:12 The basic tools are also an easy quest turn-in for the mechanics in each of the faction areas. You'll get rubles and rep for each mechanic you assist with finding them a set of Basic, Expert, and Advanced tools. The higher the rep with each faction the more inventory they have. You won't find a Nosorog at Duty without them being maxed out rep-wise.

Just want to say...installing GAMMA is actually very easy if you know anything about using PCs and can follow instructions. It’s slightly involved and takes a little time but completely worth it and MAGNITUDES massively easier than actually trying to piece together and make work all the mods that GAMMA brings to the Stalker Anomaly experience.

Im so glad stalker is getting the life again. Gamma its hard but you can tweaks the difficulty to your liking. I suggest playing in the hard mode (you are more vulnerable) and edit the bullet dmg (your bullet dmg) to 2.0 in the option menu.

Love that idea. Last time I played something like that was this difficulty in one of the Metro Exodus. It had the typical settings where enemies are both tougher and do more damage to you. But the last one was basically no health boost, both you and enemy do a lot of damage. I dislike when things feel spongy. I'm not against tough enemies (Good example is Stalker from the Chernobylite game, he has a shield of course he's tough) but if I"m putting multiple bullets in the flesh of a mans head, it stop being satisfying.

Great video. It got me to download Gamma and start my first playthrough. I would give a little tip for any new players: Do not turn on "Hardcore AI Aiming". I think I turned it on when I first booted up the game and forgot about it because I was getting destroyed my bandits and was really frustrated in the early game. Found the setting and turned it off and now I'm loving he game.

Except in this modpack they say not to use that mode, as it changes things in unpredictable ways. Read through the forum before you try it. Or test it on a fresh install.

I use the Golden Autumn mod for grass and tree rendering and for the first 16 minutes i didnt have a clue where you were since i couldnt recognize Cordon and Garbage without the waist high grass. thats wild, and for anyone wondering Golden Autumn is compatible with Gamma and it wont explode your PC for trying to render grass, it makes foliage rendering 100x easier on your machine. and is a must have.

Bro this is nice Content, you have a cool playing style! ... but here are a few tips... selling ur meat to random Loners is not best, as Butcher gives u incredible deals... pickin up bandits masks is a +8 weapon reparation bonus... repair parts beforehand and use the some engineer's vice(pay 1000Ru) to assemble them does not cost any Kit's uses... if u have two or more basic tools give one quickly to engineer, he pays you some cash + he will have some new repair kits next time he updates inventory. ah good old Bloodsuckers my 'fave' creature. I loved Misery mod 2.0 and the number of times would be coming home to the boat through the reeds at night or during thunderstorms with nothing but my flashlight for company and you'd hear something coming through the reeds full bore and just panic and run as fast as I could through the darkness hearing THAT roar. sacrificed many pairs of underwear to the STAKER gods

you probably know this by now but if you save parts from weapons above 60% and armor parts above 50% they can be repaired up to 100% with items, and it doesnt cost you any charges out of your tool kit to switch the parts out at a workbench. game also includes your own workbench that you can craft or buy so you don't have to go to a technician and pay for his vice unless you need items to craft with. instead of spending 13000 on that handgun kit and using all the charges you could have used that kit to repair a hundred smg and pistols provided you had the parts to switch out.

Man I am stoked that GAMMA is getting the treatment it deserves. Same with ANOMALY; this was a labor of love from day one and it shows. I've been playing it for about 4 years now and man does it make me happy to see this!

I'd have to agree, this certainly is one of the best single player, FPS survival horror games I've ever played. The only thing I wish was that the story bits such as items, missions and cutscenes were still intact, but I understand the nature of Anomaly being a sequel the reasons for their removal.
