DC resident here- KD is worth the drive, and Busch Gardens should be for special occasions only. I've done both on a day trip and I think KD is the better choice by far for an average person. SFA is 15min away on a good day and still not worth it.

Agree, the way BGW is better is best not worn out, and KD is still better if you just want to ride. Def. disagree with the video that SFA is "hot garbage", decent park that 1000 places would love to get -- a few listed here -- just a little redundant where it is. Except 2020 wasn't redundant at all -- thank you SF and the state of MD!

As a San Diego/LA native... Cone on man ain't even mentioning Knott's Berry Farm. Xcelerator is easily the best launch in all of Cali and Ghostrider is easy the best woodie in all of Cali. Silver Bullet is a pretty good B&M Invert, Montezooma's Revenge is the only Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop left in the US, and Hangtime is honestly not a bad Gerstlauer Infinity coaster. Plus it's very well themed for a Cedar Fair park, Ghost Town is gorgeous and Camp Snoopy is very well done for a kids land. And if you're ever there, get a Boysenberry Latte from the Starbucks in the park. Also like Knott's pulls the highest attendance numbers in the Cedar Fair chain cause it's a year round park like 6 miles from Disney so like that's pretty notable too I guess.

Growing up in metro DC before SFA was even SFA, Kings Dominion was the closest thing we had to a home park, and it was good, but Busch Gardens *and Hersheypark* were both close enough to be worth going to for an overnight trip. I definitely didn't feel deprived. If you're in Boston and what you care about is top-tier coasters, Six Flags New England is definitely the one to hit, but Lake Compounce and Canobie Lake Park are arguably nicer parks. Compounce has Boulder Dash, the third member of the holy trinity of elite New England coasters, and Phobia, a Sky Rocket II. I also like their waterpark a lot. Canobie (my home park, and the closest one to Boston by far) has a well-kept 1930s woodie and a small Gerstlauer Eurofighter. There are a lot of good flats there and it's also the best amusement park in the area for games and arcades, with a large pinball collection. They both have a lovely small-park atmosphere that Six Flags has mostly drained away from SFNE, though I admit for a Six Flags park it's probably not bad. And then there are the ones further afield. Story Land way up around North Conway, NH is a kiddie park, but they put themselves on the coaster map with a Gravity Group mini woodie that is a raging airtime machine. I have not been to Funtown Splashtown near Portland, Maine, but its woodie Excalibur seems like it's the underrated dark horse in the list of top New England coasters. Maine also has a couple of old-fashioned seaside amusement parks that are minor but look like they have a nostalgic boardwalk atmosphere if you're into that.

If you're feeling crazy, you could assign a particular score/value to every coaster (or just park), have that value diminish with drive-time/distance from the park until eventually reaching zero (maybe by fixed amounts in half-hour or 30-mile increments), map out the area around the park to see how much "coaster value" it brings to key points, then do it with all parks simultaneously to find the ""objective"" best spot to live for coasters. (I suggest doing it by coaster rather than by park, so that the influence of great rides extends much farther out than filler)

New Yorker over here for some advice over New York parks, (American Dream is great for families but thrill? It ain’t gonna it it) one minor park that’s kinda a NY special would be Coney Island. If you’re looking for thrill, it has the original cyclone (As us New Yorkers say, often cloned, never topped) and Thunderbolt, which has some violent laterals but some heavenly airtime and if you’re an airtime person it doesn’t get better than Thunderbolt. They have some non-coasters that still pack a real punch (any zenobio riders down here?) and have a huge team of construction that can build a whole park before six flags makes a single coaster.

Great video as usual. So many unfortunate cities with nothing good near them. Though if you actually think SeaWorld parks are about animal cruelty (which would include both Busch Gardens parks btw, as most people don't seem to realize that SeaWorld owns BG), then I encourage you to do some research on that. Having previously interned and worked in the animal rescue and training field for about 4 years, I can say that SeaWorld is typically the golden standard that other facilities look towards. Anyways... I'm very curious to hear your top coasters list. Are you going to do a video on that over the holidays/end of the year?

@orectolobiformgroupy4173
@orectolobiformgroupy4173 2 жыл бұрын
@@parks.atelier dude, if thats all you think SeaWorld does for animals and conservation you're sadly mistaken. Also, many dolphins and other cetaceans breach, jump and play in the water. A lot of those show behaviors are for husbandry, displaying something they may do in the wild, or simply to keep an extremely intelligent animal engaged. All of those behaviors are also entirely voluntary, meaning the animal will not see a drop in care or lack of food for not participating. Honestly, if you take issue with SW you're basically taking issue with the bulk of modern zoo practice. Its fine to have an opinion on things but if its uniformed-or worse- misinformed, then its misleading to others. All 3 SW parks are AZA accredited, as well as Busch Gardens Tampa. Thats the gold standard for zoo care nationally and Internationally. Dont take my word for it if you don't want to, feel free to actually look into the amount of good SW does and the amount of research and conservation they support around the world
@parks.atelier
@parks.atelier 2 жыл бұрын
@@orectolobiformgroupy4173 not at all. I know Sea World parks do have the rescue and conservation program, BUT the main difference between a zoo and SW are the shows. While in zoos visitors keep a fair distance to just watch the animals living their lives isn't a big deal, training animals to do stuff which are completely unnatural (don't come up saying that orcas just do backflips in the ocean all the time cuz u know it's bs) and then putting them in tiny tanks is just ridiculous. Don't support those shows at all. Really hoped they stopped ALL the animal shows. Canceling the orcas shows was a good start.
@orectolobiformgroupy4173
@orectolobiformgroupy4173 2 жыл бұрын
@@parks.atelier many Zoos do have training programs that showcase animals and their behaviors, whether is be behaviors trained for husbandry and care or natural behaviors they'd perform in the wild. SeaWorld isn't the only one, they're just the most well known. And as far as behaviors for porpoises go, many orcas breach for both hunting and social behavior (honestly jury is still out on why they do, could be a combination of those things or others things entirely) on top of exhibiting a wide variety of behaviors that can vary from pod to pod. They may not do backflips but to say they don't perform unique and novel behaviors in the wild is false. And for dolphins, they have some of the most variation in hunting strategies and behaviors compared to other species. And again, these animals are never forced to participate; AZA accreditation means something, and many of the tops zoos you can think of have the same accreditation. I'm not going to pretend that I want to see more orcas in human care; I'm glad all of the breeding is done and that there is now a large focus on education and conservation with them as ambassadors as opposed to simply an attraction. SeaWorld can't change its past but they can change what they are doing now and they have. Feel free to do more research, I know there's always nuance and grey area to stuff like this and I could definitely not be 100% correct on everything I mentioned but don't just write them off
@parks.atelier
@parks.atelier 2 жыл бұрын
@@orectolobiformgroupy4173 besides SW, I've never been to another zoo which features those kinds of shows, maybe that's just a USA law thing which don't protect animals as much as in other countries. Here in Brazil, ALL of the zoos (at least the ones I've been to, such as Projeto Tamar or Instituto Butantã) don't feature those kind of shows, and sincerely, I don't think that just because many zoos do that SW has the right to do the same - imo they are all wrong in training animals to do those shows just for entertainment purposes. Kansas City wasn’t mentioned but here’s my advice for my fellow Kansas Citians; the drive is pretty long, about 3 hours, but Silver Dollar City is a better choice than Worlds of Fun every single time.

If you're going to Kings Dominion tho, it is worth a quick stop at SFA for the Superman hyper and Batwing, one of the two Vekoma Flying Dutchmen left. And maybe Joker's Jinx. But it's a good stop to make if you have a Six Flags membership and a few hours to kill, especially since it's never crowded.

He didn't include Kemah Boardwalk or Galveston Island Pleasure Pier for Houston, and those 2 parks are bigger and much nicer than Castles and Coasters, and the new Mattel planned in Glendale. But Arizona is getting a new coaster this winter, a mountain coaster up in Williams AZ! :) so 2 years in a row with new coasters will be a much needed change of pace for our city. I wouldn't be suprised if we end up getting an indoor mall/waterpark/amusement park similar to American Dream in the distant future though

I lived in or near Indianapolis, IN and the best park to go to is Kings Island, then Holiday World, then Kentucky Kingdom and last but not least is Indiana Beach in that order. all these parks are about 3 hours or less from Indianapolis.

Lifelong Hoosier and current Indianapolis suburb resident here. Almost everyone I know from the southern 2/3 of this state or so considers Kings Island his or her home park. Indiana Beach only recently started becoming more credible - it had a reputation for being a shithole when I was a kid, Kentucky Kingdom is decent but small without any elite coasters until LR and SC opened over the past 7 years, and Holiday World is an hour further away from Indy than KI, plus it didn’t have any elite coasters until the Voyage so it was more known for Splashin’ Safari growing up. So the legendary Kings Island was and is my home park.

the good thing about having a six flags park as a home park is that my home park is less than 50 kilometers outside of downtown and therefore it's an under 40 minute drive no matter where you are in the metro area. personally I wish our park was located in the city so it would be possible to get there without a car but this isn't terrible. being able to walk, cycle or ride the bus to your home park must be the ultimate flex as a coaster enthusiast (you can go there alone whenever you want)
