My answers are as follows. Classic AC: The parkour, need I say more? Keyway Saga: I agree with you about the introspection, and I think these games have the best stories because of it, Ac3 and 4 in particular. I'm also going to to bring up the exploration, it's peak in these games. The worlds are so beautiful and unique. And it doesn't take 30 minutes to get from one end of the map to another like in Odyssey, yes I timed it. Initiates Dulogy: the stealth and assassinations. From the mission design to the player's tools, the stealth in these games is best. All that would make it better is a better detection system. Rpg games: the combat, origins and Valhalla particularly. Odyssey is great too if you can get around enemies as damage sponges. I appreciate that there is actually some difficulty to the combat in this game. The only other games I feel a threat of death are Ac1 and Unity, so it's refreshing that these games are consistently challenging.

Combat system is probably THE top thing that RPGs did right and why it's also gotten successful with the wider public. While stealth requires patience, I always knew that if I messed up the stealth it's probably a good idea to restart the mission in the older games. I have friends who even though love the games overall, did get very frustrated with that. In the RPGs if you somehow mess up the stealth, there's always the full arrows-blazing "Levantine approach" of doing things as Pierre Bellec in AC Unity puts it.

I'm about to play Unity, so I can't talk from that game forward but from the Original games I would say that what I appreciate the most was the characters and the sandbox gameplay that has inspired so many Creed-likes in recent years, a type of gameplay that was so well crafted from the very beginning that it never grows old. From the Kenway Saga I would say that what I enjoyed the most was the sense of belonging they create. The Kenway Saga, in my opinion, is better than the original games when it comes to re-creating the time periods and making you feel as part of them. In AC I and the Ezio Trilogy I enjoy running around their game worlds, but I feel like a fictional character in a fictional story, however, in the Kenway games I feel as if I am playing the role of someone that actually lived in that time period because we do in those game more than just "be the Assassin." We play as a Native American hunting in the Frontier and trying to build a settlement, or a sailor trying to find his fortune as a pirate, or a business woman with a double life, or a former slave freeing other slaves, or an explorer finding pre-historic paintings in ice caves.... We also play board games and can drink rum in the bars and stuff like that which enhances the immersion. At times the Kenway games remind me of Sid Meier simulations. All of these things, however, are interwoven very well with the fictional aspects of the games (the Assassin Fantasy), giving *these* Assassins and Templars, in my humble opinion, a greater sense of authenticity than the characters from the Original games, which felt more like symbolical heroes, rather than people that actually lived in that time period. I am pretty sure that I will find a lot to like in the Industrial Duology and the RPG Creeds and I might update this comment when I play more games, but until then, great video and stay safe.

This is a great point I never really realized the Kenway games immersed you so well like this. Games that excelled at mechanics and gameplay. GTA 4 for example kenyway saga took place in era of gaming where story lines was favored over the actual gameplay itself. 2012-2014 era , games were basically playable movies. Which you could also see in the combat.Very theatrical combat. It had the best story imo. than unity-syndicate was similair rpg triology represents there era. My dream ac game is a mix of Unity missions/stealth, classic parkour, and kenway combat. I would also love smaller versions of the worlds from the rpgs but with more dense cities and populations, retaining the empty spaces but making them a bit smaller, and have 3-4 main key cities and maybe a smaller town, all able to be seamlessly traveled to. It'd essentially be like having AC3 but without the loading screens between the frontier and NYC/Boston. You'd run from Boston to some dense forest and through that forest you'd re-emerge in NYC (obviously the scale needs to be adjusted and wouldn't at all be realistic, but it's a game after all)
@shira_yone7 ай бұрын
So the world would be somewhat like Elden Ring then, the classic dungeons would be equivalent of dense cities. Personally I've never cared much for seamless worlds when instanced ones (classic bethesda games, older AC games, yakuza series) works just fine, and if separating parts of the world helps with optimization to allow for more detailed and dense cities filled with crowds and people then I'd rather have that over the seemingly lifeless cities in the RPG trilogy.

The original Quadrilogy(?) has the best assassin stories, the naval games have the most cinematic feel with very fun combat, unity has the best parkour, one of the best stealth and combat systems, and graphically looks great, syndicate makes Unity look and feel so much better, the RPG games have well thought out RPG mechanics you just have to know how to make a solid build for whatever archetype you want to play as, and mirage has one of the best stealth system, and my personal favorite stealth system in the whole franchise, and as someone who has a deep fascination with the Islamic golden age I appreciate the attention to detail with the clothing and architecture in this game

Classic Period: Sense of direction. The modern day followed Desmond in each of the 4 games, along with AC 3, and this is the only era to actually have a sequel game for a protagonist. Kenway Saga: Probably exploring the inner conflicts of the protagonists. Connor with losing his village and facing his father and following his beliefs, Edward with seeking riches but going through loss and seeking purpose in something greater, and Shay with killing his old allies and friends and allying eith the Templars. Helix Duologoy: Black box missions. Also Paris and London feel the most alive settings with all the crowds, steamboats, trains, and carriages. RPG: Probably the most enjoyable combat system for me, minus the damage sponge enemies in Odyssey. Also the hunting system with the Cultists and being hunted with the bounty hunters were great, though I feel Odyssey's bounty hunting system was intrusive at times.

So I might have some super conflicting opinions because I grew up with 3 different eras at the same time basically. I played black flag with my uncle as a kid, which was my introduction to assassin’s creed, but didn’t legitimately play it until later, so that’s my nostalgia kick. But I grew up with Syndicate and Origins basically in tandem (as I got them both at the same time). That’s when I really got into it, and personally I love those two games (Origins is the only rpg ac that I like). If I got bored of one gameplay loop, I played the other. And when I got AC1, it felt like a second hand nostalgia kick because of how barebones the mechanics were. It was refreshing to me. So personally, I can’t say I have a preferred era, but definitely a preferred game in each era.

Besides all the obvious reasons, the reason that I love AC so much is that it poses a very powerful question with the whole narrative/ philosophy that very few other entertainment properties really go into. And the fact that it works so well in so many historical settings just goes to show how relevant the message is. Also Odyssey is a good AC game. It has everything needed to be an AC game and its ambitious nature is the very same nature that made the first AC game. Was it perfect, no. But no Ubisoft game is, that's not why we play them. Also hating Odyssey out of a misguided fear that if we like it then that's all we'll ever get from the franchise just goes to show how little people know this franchise.

Since AC Red is coming real soon this year, I really hope they implement all the things you said or at least some of the best things about each of these eras into Red. Like a proper cohesive story that ties in into the greater plot of Assassin's Creed while also being its own thing with Feudal Japan, a whole new perspective of the philosophy of the assassins and templars with the arrival of Christian Europeans into Japan and the code of the samurai, a well designed black box mission using the environment and architecture of the era, and a new order assassination system combing the ones from Odyssey and Valhalla with the investigation system in Mirage. Mirage was a step into the right direction, but still has flaws as it was held back by Valhalla's engine and small map and limited side missions. But those are my thoughts, what do you think?

I think that the only thing I disagree is the templar system from Odyssey/Valhalla because we know Ubisoft is not going to give depth to every single templar in that system. I think the interesting part of templars is how their approach and philosophy affects people around which is not something Ubisoft is willing to do with 20 characters. Unfortunately, to me, the templars felt like a checklist because they all had a similar skin so they do not feel unique and you could not feel their ideas or motivations which resulted in killing another NPC. I agree with the rest of the video though because those are things Ubisoft has showed that they can do.

It's really spot on with these facts. And giving the RPG trilogy "the huge sense of scale" as their 'advantage' is the icing on top, lmao. Idk. It may fits for the RPG gameplay but really throw away the "compact-scale" action-adventure feeling that has been around from the beginning I somehow could only tolerate Mirage kind of map as near the perfect size of an AC map (idk if Mirage belongs to the RPG but it just feels like a filler game, lol)

It's really sad they didn't continue the Helix series, I wish they had one game that took place between Unity and Syndicate though, personally I'd like to see Spain or Germany but I'm leaning more towards Spain though because of Spain's interesting mix of Christian and Islamic history and being caught in between European Mediterranean and African cultures, it would be kinda reminiscent of the Levant in the first game, but also it isn't the first time Spain has come up in the series and the Spanish were a part of the Crusades so it makes sense lore wise too, a DLC or spinoff could add French controlled Morocco as well which would be really cool. Germany would be really interesting though too because the Germany we know today was essentially established by Crusaders which actually kind of ties to the rise of fascism in Germany, something that the games have alluded to or depicted more than once and have even implied that fascists like Hitler were actually working for the Templars. Honestly felt like the games were leading up to WWII specifically to draw the connection from the Crusades to 20th century fascism, but then they just didn't

I believe that the series starting from AC1 kept getting better and better and better until Syndicate when they stagnated, opting to just copy Unity. The series got better again when Origins came out, but upon the release of Odyssey, they both stagnated and started further straying from the Assassin's Creed plot. This is where I believe we still are, stagnation. We have to wait and hope Shadows breaks this stagnation.

And with the vast interaction between Colonial, Mughal, Shaivite, Vaishnavite and Buddhist ideologies interacting with each other and the dilemmas coming out of them will be really interesting. 10:09 I feel like we have two polar opposite perspectives on the rpg trilogy 😂 Obviously we both love mirage (who doesn’t) But I really do not like origins, for 2 main reasons. Level gating Extremely bloated loot. The level gating in origins is some of the worst I’ve ever seen, I think even 30 mins into the game you get level gated, you need to be level 5 for the next mission and at this point your level 2. The side missions are not good, and usually have nothing to do with the story. Not to mention you can grind for hours upgrading all your gear, but that still doesn’t correlate to your main level, which is very dumb when you think about it. And I don’t need to go into the bloated loot pool bc I’m sure you’ve experienced that a lot. It just takes the worst traits form an rpg, and forces them into an ac game. Say your level 24, and the next main quest is L29, that’s over an hour of side content just to be able to play one main quest, just feels like one step forward two steps back. Whereas Valhalla has very limited level gating, there is 0 level gating in Norway at the start of the game, and it’s based on regions, not individual missions. Not to mention Valhalla adds the ability for the player to make choices, which imo is a good rpg trait.

Those kills are meaningless for me, I don't care about killing them and why exactly I kill them apart from them being "the bad guys". Imo the best portray of "the bad guys" is when you actually meet them and the story gives you reasons why to kill your target like Alberto Uberti in AC2 - personal vendetta unlike in RPGs where you kill those cultists or order members just becouse they ARE those members. Or in AC Mirage (very good AC game but average story) the head of order is some random who is important and you meet him/her (avoiding spoilers) while knowing nothing about her/him. Also I have a request. Could you please make a video about retconed lore in AC? I mean I disagree with the grouping just because u kind of generalize the idea that you have upon all the games in the group. Like hollywoodanized narrative w/ Ezio. Yes, and it wasn't a thing of AC1. Also, I'd still say that Cesare Borgia while being as he is, he isn't flat of a character or anything, he's just representing one type of people, of which there are many between the Templars too, obviously. Oh and Rodrigo he's even less flat if I can use this wording. About the praising the Kenway saga for the philosophy, that's back again how AC1 did every single thing it can the best and (only) Black Flag romantizes with it for sure, (Darby is just a supernatural being who really understand what he's supposed to write while including his own style). AC3 while arguably the most loved Templar, Haytham, it has the most bland, stupid protagonist, Connor. Sometimes it just feels it started as telling the story of Haytham leaving the Creed and joining the Templars (that's why it has 5 Haytham sequences) but they for some reason changed to Connor (to have the side of a freedom fighter and show off american history facts about which nobody cares only the americans; I still say AC3 has the most boring setting of all time, yet) and Rogue is just ass (tbf, for fair reasons like ubisoft greed). So only Black Flag is good for me. About the rpg games' aspects you mention, yes, true, but I feel like they only fit that type of game. But like, who knows I never really think about those bc I don't wanna waste energy thinking on the 0.00000000001% of a game of which rest is just garbage. If you pay attention, of all these groups (I guess not Kenway saga, but tbf I cut them to 2 half bc AC3 and the BF&R duo are different gameplay-wise too so I like think of them as seperate things) have the "best" game on the start. AC1, *BF(?)*, Unity, Origins, if we're ordering them only inside their group. Phew, that was complicated to describe :D But yeah, if I had to pick games to recommend to someone in terms of which are worth playing, I'd say: AC1-ACR, Black Flag, Unity, Origins. This is, if I ignore my principle (which stands somewhat like: don't play anything past Black Flag. They introduced mictrotransactions in that game, and it truly shows.) AND watch a short revision of Valhalla's story, especially how the Templars are founded and how they originally were way more religious than how much they are already in Altair's age. (I liked that part of Valhalla the most, not even the main narrative :D. I hate how they just fused mythos and mythical *things* with ISU ever since Odyssey, I think? Origins had that influence too if I remember correctly.) So GENERALLY I share the same thinking that each entry has something but personally that fact doesn't justificate playing a horrendous game for one little aspect. It's really a strange phenomenon how gamers sometimes like more to think and talk about games more than playing, huh. Because of this each generation's first game is the best *rule*, do I really await Hexe. Let's wait it out, shall we?

That period of time between 2012 and 2014/15 was the worst era of AC in my opinion (aside from AC 4 Black Flag of course). I did not like those american settings at all, with AC Unity being the single worst game in the entire franchise, as well as Rogue. I have lots of dislike and resentment towards Unity specifically, since it spawned the RPG games. I am somewhat optimistic for the current era of AC, with AC Red featuring the beautiful feudal japan setting. the new protagonist, Naoi, should be a compelling character, i hope. Not holding my breath though, the writing team at Ubisoft has gone downhill, and standards have fallen in the writing of these games.

There's no golden age of AC. If you like games, then play it, but don't force people to like it. That's all I'm saying. Good video
