Great vid. I believe what your talking about on distance of each club are correct. I found that my distance is getting shorter by about 5 yards and keep using the club that gets me to the distance I need. My 8 iron was about 150 yds and now about 140 to 150. So end of last year I started using my 7 iron which got me closer to the pin.

The chip & run tip was the most useful reminder for me. The reason that we all try to pitch onto the green is that written tuition (golf magazines etc.) tell you that that is what you should be doing to stop bad bounces in the fringe. Having joined a links golf club 18 months ago, I've found that this is wrong as the only way to get the ball near the hole on a links is to keep it as low as possible! Good video Gary. I thoroughly enjoy the wide variety of your content and your various guests!

I gapped on the driving range for $0 dollars besides a bucket of balls 😆 It's where I noticed my 5 and 3 wood went approx the same distance but the 5 was easier to strike well re: loft. Every year at the beginning of a season I hit the range specifically to get distances on all clubs. I use a GPS tracker when I play so I check my actual playing yardages against my listed stock yardages every once in a while during a season and adjust accordingly. I'll also write down what my half and 3/4 iron swings do for certain clubs including longer 'getting out of trouble' shots with my 5i re: longer chip 'n runs to the green from say 70 yards in and out of the trees ⛳

The chipping tip also helps high handicapers like with mishits. If you don't hit the ball perfect it still rolls to the hole. If you mishit a high ball you strik is much fermer so than the ball goes past the green while the short ship with an i7 will be swung much slower and the mishitt is less worse :)

It’s amazing how many people don’t use the tee box. A year or 2 ago when I committed to lessons my shot shape changed from fade to a draw. It took me a while to trust it & so alter my position. Nothing worse than striking it great but missing the green because of alignment or positioning on the tee box. Good stuff 🤜🏼

if I line up to hit the draw, a fade will occur, if I line up to hit a fade, sure enough, the draw will my result. I have learned to accept this as the golf god's sense of humor.

Being a member of a club, I go out in the evenings when it's quiet and practice around the greens, different shots, putting etc. I also go back from the green and play shots in, if it's on the green putt it, off the green decide what shit to play. I'm definitely going to have a gapping session as like most golfers I probably think I hit the ball further than I do. I do use the tee box to get the best angle, it's unfortunate that my shot isn't always as accurate 😂. Another good video Gaz, looking forward now to rules with Jules 👍.

I am in your camp Gary chipping with 1 or 2 clubs...I find it difficult to judge the speed of the ball off the face of a 7 iron 8iron especially. For me I prefer getting so used to 1 club that I can land it different distances and visualize the shot from there ...ie 54 degree half carry half roll and there is my landing spot. I prefer the 54 because i get a bit more consistent strike than with 58 degree loft...with the 58 the face is so open it is easy to hit it on different part of the face and not get a repeatable launch angle. I am sure it would be useful to have the skill to use many different clubs to chip with on a links course but i live in Toronto Canada so I don't see many of those. The size of the greens are not that big either so I don't really need it. On big greens I may use a 50 degree with the same stroke just to get more roll out. Interesting story in Annika Sorenstam's book where she talks about Tiger convincing her to use the 1 club method..he showed her adjustments necessary to hit lob wedge high and low and alter the face to produce different trajectories .I think you can dial in your feel using 1 club over and over . In the end everyone has to figure out what works best for them... but also giving other techniques a try is a good thing I think.

Love the throwing the ball concept for chipping. It makes sense ... but then it doesn't look as good as the one bounce stop it next to the flag! Not that that ever happens other than in my mind. Ha. 8 iron bump and run is so much more consistent particularly for higher handicappers.

This was excellent , more of this type of stuff please , particularly when you can hit shots set up different scenarios - good course management can save you a lot of pain .Leave egos behind. Some of my pals laugh at me when I take a 7 iron into a green when they hit there 9 iron , they don’t when I’m on the green and they are 10 yards short. I walk of with par or better and them a bogey 😊😊😊

Thanks Gaz. Another really relatable video! Think it's worthwhile having more than one gapping session. I really enjoyed mine and it gave me things to work on because my 4,5,6 iron yardages were very similar. As your game improves your gapping changes so worth going back again £30-50 is really good value.

Great video, I've got a bit of a specific course management question, a course I play has a Par 4, 305 yds with a huge tree right in the middle of the (fairly tight) fairway at about 100yds, the hole then bends left about 30° at about 200yds. Never know if I should play left/right of the tree, meaning my first shot is very short and makes for a difficult second shot, or try to launch it over the tree (risky).

Gaz, with the technology available today there is no reason to not know your distances. Great video with great points. Our course most of the trouble is long so better to be short, it really pays to know the course you are playing! I play with 11 or 12 clubs sometimes 2 putters ( blade and mallet ) if not sure of the greens. The top of my is sparse but the bottom is heavy as those are my scoring clubs!

Excellent advice, From my personal experience however I have to call issue with his description of the draw and hook. A draw might start right and finish on target, a hook however starts right, then travels into the woods, or pond, or someone's yard, or over the highway.....(I guess technically that's left of the target.)

Gaz, nice tip on the tee box but I wish there was an explanation that most tee boxes do not aim you down the centre of the fairway. They seem to aim more towards the trouble down one side of the hole or the other. . So pick out the line you want the ball to travel along. All Pros do this , most amateurs don't especially beginners.

Great advice all around other than I have to respectfully say... their is a minority group of golfers that practice to have dead straight ball flights using the single plane swing...i play straight most every shot...my big misses are grooves "high or low" not curving off one way or the other..the greatest ball striker that ever lived Moe Norman proved it over and over...he had a 107 mph club speed at 64 years old....dead straight and proved it to onlooking pga touring pros....I just switched 2 months ago because the fundamentals that Todd Graves are refreshing and it is a swing that easier on my body...this is not an attempt to promote more so to say that: Moe was dead straight and it is possible....respect
