I really did not want to like SK-II, but I do love the benefits. I think you totally nailed that it gives you similar benefits to AHA with zero irritation. The way all my other products just seem to work noticeably better when I use SK-II as a first essence is also a major benefit.

​@@davidsotir4318it's a first essence and is intended by the maker to be used right after cleansing, before anything else, to help you get more absorption from what you use after it. Other essences not labeled as a first essence would come after toners and before ampoules/serums in a typical skin care order. Basically you usually go thinnest/lightest/least occlusive>heaviest most occlusive, in order of thin/light to thick/heavy

I originally tried SKII several years ago and wasn’t impressed. Fast forward to now and I love it! Over time my skin is getting more sensitive and I respond really well to Korean and Japanese products. I alternate SKII with Missha and Secret Key to help with the cost but I do notice if I completely skip the SKII for more than 2 weeks. This year it’s my Sephora sale purchase.

Great video, as always! Not a toner, but I've been LOVING Missha's Red Algae Essence for a couple of years now. I only mention it because you discussed the Anua toner's calming effect. The red algae essence calms my rosacea but is probably more moisturizing than the toner, so I wouldn't use it as a mask. I have a drawerful of essences, but I miss it every time I run out and end up repurchasing. I'm definitely going to try the Anua!

I almost exclusively use Asian beauty products and most of the people I’ve found who review them are oily skin types but I m your skin twin and have dry sensitive acne prone skin and we share a lot of the same sensitivities! The SK-II Essence is the most expensive skincare product I own. I’m in my 40’s, and I love it! Like you, I don’t think I noticed a major difference in my skin immediately. Then suddenly I was like “wow!”. The tone and texture of my skin has improved so much with consistent use of it. Pricey but worth it in my opinion!

Thank you for the kind words! I’ve noticed that most of the K-Beauty brands sell very, very similar cotton pads (can attest to: Rovectin, Pyunkang Yul, Anua, Kaine, probably more that I can’t recall). So similar that I suspect it’s the same manufacturer 🤐 So I just pick up whichever is priced best haha!

Paula’s Choice was my intro into the world of hydrating, non-astringent toners 20+ years ago and remainded my holy grail until I discovered k & j beauty and the 7 skins method of hydrating my skin. Now that I’m addicted to using multiple layers of toners morning and night, I find that many of the Asian beauty brands lend themselves to that more easily. If I could only use 1 layer of 1 toner in my routines for the rest of my life, I’d probably pick one of hers. They are so jam packed with a wide range of beneficial ingredients. I often bring her skin recovery toner when I travel and just want 1.

Hello Alice, my favorite toner is the I'from rice toner, I love how it leaves my skin hydrated and at the same time I find it very nourishing, the luminosity it leaves me with is beautiful and at the same time calms my skin. And I discovered my exfoliating toner recently and it is the mandelic acid toner from I Whishtrend, it is gentle and leaves my skin softer. I prefer the some by mi because I find it more hydrating & calming, plus it has a noticeable honey smell! Also, would you be interested in making an updated algae video? I have actually used all of them except Indie Lee and I agree with you on your choices. I have bought multiples of the Isntree AHA as compared to western acids, this does not irritate my skin whilst still being a decent % of actives. Propolis and Cica are my two favourite ingredients, so loved that Cosrx propolis toner. My favourite types of toners are the milky ones, like the Celimax dual barrier cream toner, the laneige cream toner and the Dr Ceurcle Kombucha one. The Torriden Ceramide toner is on my next to try list

This is very random given the topic, but I was thinking about the way you focused on different purposes for toner and thought it may be interesting to do a video about either different ways of addressing concerns or the best ways to address concerns in terms of different steps of the routine. For example, I feel hydration is most easily addressed with toners, while I personally like to manage exfoliation in cleansers due to the ability to more easily control the effect with a wash off. I'm not convinced there's always a right/wrong way, but I recognize different mechanisms have different advantages and I have found it's much easier to manage a routine by knowing what I want to achieve with each step. As far as toners go... I feel it speaks to my use of toners that I treat SK-II as specifically a "first essence" and very different than toners or post toner essences. I focus toners on hydration and antioxidant benefits and really like the "I'm From Rice Toner" which grants a similar benefit to the SK-II in terms of a long term benefit evening out skin tone. Everything else I try feels "fine" and I have preferences, but I've never felt the need to stick to one.

Antioxidant product I start my routine out with is the Niod Superoxide Dismutase saccharide mist ,love the sk11 love cosrx proplolis toner and the cica fit toner ,RNW safe me toner , FAB oat toner , DrC kombucha. I use the PC 2% BHA but not like a toner more a treatment step and not alot . I have more but those are probably my favorite things . I need to try the Anua heartleaf. I have a hard time with AHA so I don't really have one on my list sometimes I use that glow recipe watermelon toner but I think it's pha . Love toners and essence probably my favorite step . I'm getting the SK11 holiday set. It's the first thing I'm going to buy in the sale .

Every year ( up until a few years ago ) my mom would buy me Shiseido’s Benefiance Skin Softener- it was her holy grail and she hated not using it. I honestly don’t know if it did anything for me or not, but I finally finished my last bit of it a few weeks ago. I don’t have a new fave, but I ordered a new K beauty brand skin softener from Nuzm (sp?) #3 - I hope it’s good!!! The Isntree chestnut bha has worked well for me, and I appreciate that it has no noticeable smell. The nail polish remover smell (to my nose) of the Paula’s choice is enough to turn me off.

The cosrx full fit propolis synergy toner did not work for me. It leaves my skin very sticky and subsequent layers with other products becomes messy. It does not matter whether I add it as the first layer or 5th. Sukoyaka suhada urea moisturizing toner, was my first ever toner. I still love it. It is very hydrating, plumps the skin and hides my pores. It is non greasy, can be used for 7 skin method, sheet mask or layered with other porducts.

I've had such bad luck with ferments, either they do nothing (Neogen galactomyces) or they actively break me out (SK-II, Estee Lauder night repair..). And while I am one of those people who benefit from calming toners, heartleaf and centella also do zilch for me, and I am allergic to mugwort 😅Cosrx Propolis and Mixsoon Master soft toner are my soothing heroes!

I bit last at the last Sephora sale and got this one -has anyone used it? Says you get results in three days and has eight times more concentrated Pitera. VERY expensive. The SK-II comparison to an AHA without the sensitivity has my attention. I got the neogen microferment toner, I wish the texture was better. It feels like water, but in a worse way? It's not hydrating at all which is what my brain expects. But my skin has been very happy since using it, so I can't help but wonder what SK-II can do.

Neogen is a good choice! I’d say that and IOPE come closest to SK-II to me (probably should have mentioned this in the video, I now realize). Still a tough call on whether to upgrade, but I will say you chose a good one!

My dad had me on saulboats at age 3 by the time i was a full blown crew member i noticed workingon the boats how awful the very expensive hardware wore in the sun ,saltwater etc. So dating back to say 1974 ish we were ysing all kinds of stuff to make our silver hardwear shiny again. This is weathering and its what does age our face and skin. Please use antioxidants, i dont think skincare has let all of us consumers know where and what all the powerful antioxidants are. Great video. Hopefully my bonus check is better this year so i can treat myself to Sk ii but i do use glycolic acid , and lactic .

My only problem with essences like sk 2 and tatcha is there so ginormous and last way too long. My tatcha essence still has two inches left of it and I've had it for what seems like longer than a year. And I like to try a lot of skin care like yourself. But I like to pace myself bc of bills and everything, the bank account starts to look sad. Also, I like to try and be environmental friendly and not lose control and buy too much skincare, not saying you don't but still. I try and be careful with how much I buy is my final point but I've heard how good the sk 2 essence is and want to try it. So maybe ill cave after a paycheck and purchase it.

What do you think of the hada kabo gokyu jun light lotion (essence really I guess) with fermented hylauronic acid? I'm just trying it out. Its made my skin ultra soft, and really plumped out my fine lines, its ultra simple, immediate results, new HG for a first toner for me (I use three separate toners. Exfoliating, hydrating, essence)

I forgot about this one. It was my first Asian beauty brand toner. I got drawn away by toners w thinner consistency and added calming or antioxidant ingredients. I used to get the big pump bottle and use it on my body after a shower before lotion, as well as on my face. I may need to pick it up again. If I remember, multiple layers could get a little sticky (but super hydrating) and I loved making a sheet mask out of it.

Yes, for me! I still have the lotus toner, but it didn’t end up being particularly special (I need to finish or toss it soon actually). The anua has an intense calming effect plus light hydration for me while the Rovectin felt like it merely gave light hydration.

Lol oh no, skincare conspiracies! (I have some too though 👀) I first tried it maybe 2ish years ago when nobody was talking about it and it blew me away from the start! So I think the growth is organic, and I suspect the brand is using their earnings on advertising/sponsorships. They seem very excited to have made it this far, and it’s well deserved IMO!

Sadly, I do wish to compliment the higher end products that uses more refined extracts in their formula for a faster outcome. My hydration toner goes to Corsx propolis toner as well and the Abib toner takes the calming toner for me. As for the more simplistic Korean bifida, currently still using Benton Fermentation essence. I need to go cost effective rather than switching more for the luxury brands... 😂

You could! I’m planning my favorite essences video and that will have more moisturizing options. I tend to start thinking of moisture by that step vs toner, but tbh both steps are optional (and I don’t even do both every day lol)

Hi Alice, I have a question but it’s not related to this topic, which is, would you recommend using bifida and peptides to someone who is under 20? Because I read that these ingredients are for people in their 20s. I’m interested in buying the instree bifida ampoule, which you recommended in one of your videos, but I’m not sure I can use it in my skin.

Hmm, I’d say bifida is for skin strengthening and fighting dryness, which isn’t really limited to an age group. However, the occlusive nature of products is often (though not always) included in products for more mature skin - so it depends how the bifida is formulated. Serums are usually flexible, cleansers/moisturizers can be where you feel those differences. Hope that helps!

Sometimes I feel like only AHAs/retinols work as an active ingredient. Everything else can be linked with skin cycling, with this I mean it is skin cycling that makes the face glow and we confuse the glow thinking it came from the product. I could be very wrong hmmm

Yea silicone masks are a great option - you can put those on top of toner/serum for a similar effect! I often forget about them because I’ve yet to find one that fits my face well. The compressed sheet masks might be too small for some, and silicone masks too large for others (why these don’t come in multiple sizes is beyond me!)

I’m hesitant around all the multi-weight hyaluronic acid that seems to be in everything. I haven’t had a bad reaction (yet) but I’m wary with my sensitive skin around potentially irritating ingredients and how much of them I use. Although it seems like ha is in everything, I’ve been keeping a list of toners without ha. The Anua heartleaf toner doesn’t have ha! Some other k beauty toners without ha to try- Pyunkang Yul essence toner, CosRx pure fit cica toner, Isntree yam root milk toner, I’m from rice toner, Mixsoon bean essence, klairs daily skin hydrating water, Manyo vegan fic toner. Not an exhaustive list, but may be worth checking out if you like toners but are avoiding hyaluronic acid. Please double check the ingredients before you try anything. They could change. I’m also known to just plain make mistakes.
